The alpha of icefall

last update publish date: 2026-07-26 00:43:29

There were only a handful of Alphas capable of making an entire pack nervous with nothing more than a scheduled visit.

Alpha Edwin of Icefall was one of them.

I had heard his name countless times over the years, but I had never met the man himself.

Every story painted him differently.

Some called him ruthless while others claimed he was the strongest Alpha in the Northern Territories.

A few insisted he had single-handedly driven three rogue packs from his borders.

Whatever the truth was…His reputation always arrived before he did.

***********

The packhouse was unusually busy before sunrise.

Servants polished every suit of ceremonial armor displayed in the entrance hall.

Fresh banners bearing Moonridge’s crest were hung from the balconies.

The cooks had been preparing a feast since dawn, even the warriors looked sharper than usual.

I found Kael standing in the courtyard, inspecting the honor guard.

“You’ve had them training since sunrise.”

He looked over his shoulder and smiled. “I have.”

“You’d think the King himself was visiting.”

A quiet laugh escaped him. “Some would argue this is just as important.”

I folded my arms. “I’ve never seen you prepare for a guest like this.”

Kael dismissed the guards with a wave before walking toward me.

“Icefall isn’t an ordinary pack.”

“So I’ve heard.” I snorted.

“They’re our northern neighbors.”

“And?” I raised a brow.

“And they’ve kept the rogues away from our borders for years.”

I frowned. “I thought our warriors handled the northern patrols.”

“They do.” He squeezed my hand softly.

“But if Icefall ever fell…”. His expression grew serious. “…Moonridge would become the rogues’ next target.”

The realization settled heavily in my chest.

“So this visit…Could shape the future of both packs.”

*********

By noon, word spread through the village.

“They’ve crossed the eastern bridge.”

“They’re almost here.”

Children climbed onto fences while warriors lined the entrance road.

Even the elders gathered outside the packhouse.

I stood beside Kael at the front steps.

The sound reached us first.

Hooves pounded the earth, steady and powerful.

A moment later, a procession of riders emerged through the towering gates.

The warriors of Icefall rode in perfect formation.

Every movement was disciplined, and every expression unreadable.

Their dark cloaks bore the silver crest of a wolf standing atop an icy mountain.

Then…The rider at the front removed his hood.

For reasons I couldn’t explain…the moment my eyes landed on him…

My wolf stirred hard.

“Look.” The voice echoed inside my mind.

I frowned slightly. “Quiet.”

She ignored me. “Look at him.”

My pulse quickened. I couldn’t understand why.

Alpha Edwin swung gracefully from his horse before handing the reins to one of his men.

He wasn’t what I’d imagined.

He carried no unnecessary arrogance, no loud confidence, and no need to announce his authority.

It surrounded him naturally.

His black coat rested neatly over broad shoulders, while the silver clasp fastened near his collar caught the afternoon sunlight.

His dark hair brushed the nape of his neck, stirred gently by the wind.

His face remained calm and observant.

The kind of face that revealed very little. Yet somehow…The entire courtyard seemed quieter after he stepped into it.

Kael descended the stairs first.

“Alpha Edwin.”

The two men clasped forearms.

“It’s good to see you again.”

“The journey was peaceful.” Edwin’s voice was deep and steady.

“I’m pleased to hear it.” Kael turned toward me. “My Luna.”

I stepped forward gracefully.

“This is Alpha Edwin of Icefall.”

His gaze settled on me just for a heartbeat, then he inclined his head respectfully.

“Luna. It is an honor to finally meet you.”

His voice remained polite and measured. Nothing about his expression suggested anything unusual.

Yet my wolf suddenly paced frantically inside me.

“Look at him. Don’t look away.”

I swallowed. “It is an honor to welcome you to Moonridge.”

His eyes lingered on mine for the briefest moment.

Almost as though…He recognized something.

Then the moment passed.

The afternoon was filled with formal discussions.

The elders spoke of trade, and the Alphas discussed border patrols.

I remained beside Kael throughout the meetings, contributing whenever matters concerned the welfare of the pack.

Alpha Edwin spoke very little.

When he did…Everyone listened.

He never raised his voice and never interrupted. Yet somehow, every suggestion he made carried weight.

Even Elder Rowan found himself agreeing more than once.

As the discussions continued, I became aware of something strange.

Every now and then…I felt as though someone was watching me.

The first time, I ignored it.

The second time…I glanced across the council chamber, Alpha Edwin was already looking at me.

The moment our eyes met…He looked away.

I frowned.

Perhaps I had imagined it. But then it happened again and again.

During lunch While the elders spoke and even as we walked through the training grounds.

Each time I happened to look in his direction…His eyes were already on me.

My wolf refused to calm down.

“Something’s wrong.”

“No,” I answered silently. “Something’s different.”

**********

Before sunset, Kael offered to show our guests the northern watchtowers.

I remained behind to oversee the evening banquet.

When the warriors returned, the feast began almost immediately.

Stories were exchanged, and wine flowed freely.

Laughter filled the hall.

For the first time that day, Alpha Edwin seemed almost relaxed.

One of the elders raised a cup.

“To the friendship between Moonridge and Icefall.”

“To peace,” Kael added.

The room echoed with agreement.

As I lifted my cup…I caught Alpha Edwin looking at me once more.

His expression was unreadable.

There was no smile, no flirtation, only quiet confusion as though he was asking himself the very same question my wolf refused to answer.

The visit ended the following morning.

The warriors gathered once more in the courtyard.

Kael clasped Edwin’s forearm. “Travel safely.”

Then…Edwin turned toward me.

“Luna.”

I offered a polite smile. “I hope your journey home is peaceful.”

His gaze met mine. “It will be.”

Something about the way he said it made my chest tighten.

Before I could think too deeply about it, he mounted his horse.

Within moments…Icefall’s warriors disappeared beyond the gates.

Only then did I realize my wolf had finally gone quiet.

That evening, Kael and I sat together in the library.

The fire crackled softly between us.

I closed the book resting on my lap.

“Can I ask you something?”

Kael looked up. “Of course.”

“What is Alpha Edwin really like?”

A small smile tugged at his lips. “I was wondering when you’d ask.”

“I’ve never seen the elders treat another Alpha with so much respect.”

“Respect?” He chuckled. “They fear him a little.”

I blinked. “Fear him?”

“Not because he’s cruel.” Kael leaned back in his chair. “Because he’s brilliant. He became Alpha younger than I did. He rebuilt Icefall after years of conflict. He drove the rogues out of the northern forests. And he’s never lost a battle.”

I stared at him. “Never?”

“Not once.” Kael said proudly.

“That’s… impressive.” I gasped.

“It is.” Kael nodded. “Without Icefall guarding the northern territories, Moonridge would constantly be fighting rogue attacks. So this peace agreement…Means our warriors can finally breathe a little easier.”

I smiled. “I can see why today mattered so much.”

“It did.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then another question slipped out before I could stop it.

“His Luna must be very proud of him.”

Kael looked genuinely surprised.

“He doesn’t have one.”

I frowned. “What?”

“He’s unmated.”

I blinked several times. “You’re serious?”

Kael nodded. “As far as anyone knows.”

“But…” I struggled to find the words.“He’s powerful, respected, and successful.”

“I know.” Kael laughed quietly. “Many daughters of noble families have tried to catch his attention.”

“And?” I raised a brow.

“He rejected every one of them.” He replied.

I stared into the fire. “I wonder why.”

“So does everyone else.” Kael shrugged.

That night, sleep refused to come.

Kael had long since drifted off beside me.

I lay awake, staring at the ceiling.

Every time I closed my eyes…I saw a pair of steel-gray eyes.

Calm and unreadable.

Watching me from across the council chamber.

I rolled onto my side.

“Enough,” I muttered silently to my wolf.

She hadn’t spoken since morning.

For a long while…There was only silence.

Then So quietly I almost believed I’d imagined it…She whispered a single word.

“Mate.”

My entire body went rigid.

“No.” I shut my eyes tightly. “No… Kael is our mate.”

The Moon Goddess would never make such a mistake. Would she?

My wolf didn’t answer.

She simply repeated, softer this time…

“Mate.”

Sleep never came after that.

The first drops of rain tapped softly against the tall windows as I made my way down the corridor.A smile tugged at my lips before I even realized it.It was the Rain.I had always loved the rain, especially when Kael was with me.During storms, he always insisted I slept in his arms. He claimed thunder made my wolf restless.I always argued that I wasn’t afraid. He never believed me.“I know you aren’t,” he’d say with that crooked smile of his. “But I’m using it as an excuse to hold you.”Then he would pull me so tightly against his chest that I could barely move.Every morning after a storm, I’d complain that my arms and legs ached because he refused to let me go in his sleep. He would only laugh before kissing my forehead.“I’ll do it again next time.”Thinking about those nights made my chest warm.Perhaps…Tonight could be one of them. The rain grew heavier as another flash of lightning lit the corridor.I quickened my pace.********When I stepped into our chamber, Kael was alr

It made no sense. The Moon Goddess never made mistakes.Kael was my mate, and had always been my mate.I reached for the bond between us, feeling its familiar warmth.“There,” I whispered to my wolf. “Do you feel that?”She remained silent.“You were wrong.” I whispered. • THE LUNA’S CROWN   The harvest festival

The Harvest Festival began beneath a sky so clear that every star seemed close enough to touch.By sunrise, Moonridge Pack was already alive with laughter.Children darted through the village carrying woven flower baskets while warriors decorated the training grounds with banners bearing the pack’s crest. The scent of roasted meat drifted through the crisp autumn air.For one day, there were no patrol reports to worry about. The Harvest Festival had always been my favorite time of the year.It was the one celebration every wolf in Moonridge looked forward to, regardless of rank. For three days, the pack forgot about patrols, border disputes, and council meetings.Children raced through the village with flower crowns woven into their hair.Warriors challenged one another to friendly competitions.Families gathered around great bonfires beneath the moon, sharing stories that had been passed down for generations. It was more than a festival. It reminded us that before we were warriors… we were a family. As Luna, the responsibility of organizing the celebration had always fallen to me.It was a responsibility I loved.************The great hall buzzed with activity.Long wooden tables were lined against the walls while servants climbed ladders to hang silver ribbons from the ceiling beams.“Careful with those lanterns,” I called. “Leave enough space between them.
