NIKOLAI

The silver dagger misses my throat by a millimeter. It hums, vibrating with lethal intent, as it embeds itself deep into the ancient oak tree behind me.

"Oh, come on, sweetheart," I drawl, leaning my head back against the rough bark with a lazy, blood-soaked grin. "Your brother told me you were the deadly one. I am starting to think the great Alpha Alaric just wanted me to kill you so he wouldn't have to share his inheritance."

Valeria, the ruthless sister of my sworn enemy, snarls. Her golden wolf eyes glow like dying embers in the dim forest light. Blood drips from a jagged cut on her temple, but she doesn't care. She lunges again. Claws extended, she aims straight for my chest, desperate to tear out my heart.

I don't even draw my blade. I sidestep with terrifying speed, letting her momentum carry her past me. I catch her slick wrist, spin her around, and pin her back against my chest. Leaning down, I let my voice drop to a dark, mocking whisper against her ear. "Nice perfume, by the way. Is that desperation or just the smell of a losing war?"

With a sharp twist, I trip her legs out from under her. She crashes heavily into the dirt. Before she can roll over, my combat boot plants itself firmly on her sternum, pinning her down. The shadows around us seem to writhe, responding to my chaotic, suffocating aura.

For three years, the Rogue Uprising has been bleeding out. The Primordial’s elite packs have pushed my people to the brink, hunting us like vermin, trapping us in these freezing barren borderlands. We are outnumbered ten to one. Our supplies are gone, and every dawn brings casualty report. I am a king without a kingdom, ruling over a graveyard. If something doesn't change soon, the rogue lineage ends with me.

"Tell your brother that if he wants my head, he needs to send a real wolf next time. Not a pup playing with silver," I smile, letting the tips of my fangs lengthen just enough to gleam in the moonlight. I tap the side of my head. "Mind-link him, Tell him I’m keeping your little dagger as a toothpick."

"My Lord!"

I don't take my eyes off Valeria, but my smile fades slightly as my best female warrior bursts through the tree line. Her breathing is ragged. Her fingers tremble so violently she can barely hold her glowing amethyst staff. This isn't the face of a witch reporting a standard skirmish. This is sheer panic.

"Not now, Trish," I sigh, adjusting the collar of my leather jacket. "I’m in the middle of being charming."

"The Primordial's seers have found it," Trish gasps, completely ignoring my sarcasm. She stumbles toward me, her eyes wide. "The prophecy. The Golden Ticket is real, Nikolai. A hybrid. She hasn't awakened yet."

I freeze.

The Golden Ticket. The myth we all thought was a fairytale told to pups. A hybrid born from the two most powerful bloodlines in history. If she exists, she is the ultimate reset button.

"Where?" I demand, my voice losing all its playful edge. The air in the clearing turns freezing cold as my power flares.

"A human city called Atlanta," Trish says, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper.

"She’s completely vulnerable, living an ordinary life. Nikolai, if the Primordial gets his hands on her, his forces will harness her power and use it to wipe out our entire resistance out by morning. But if you get her first... we can get an upper hand, Awaken her magic. She will be the ultimate weapon to win this war."

I stare at Trish, my mind racing through the tactical possibilities. If I capture this girl, I can force her awakening. I can bend her to my will, anchor her power to the rogue faction, and turn the tide of this entire bloody war. We won't just survive; we will conquer.

But as Trish continues to speak, listing the coordinates and details, a sudden, icy realization hooks into the back of my mind.

I look down at my feet.

Valeria is still pinned beneath my boot. But she isn't fighting anymore. She isn't snarling. Instead, a slow, bloody smirk is spreading across her face. Her golden eyes are locked onto me, gleaming with triumph.

Why would the Alaric send his own sister on a reckless, poorly planned ambush against the Rogue King?

To keep me occupied.

"Trish, stop talking," I snap, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Valeria lets out a breathless, mocking laugh from beneath my boot. "You are too late, Rogue King," she spits, blood bubbling at the corner of her mouth. "Do you really think my brother would let you find out about the hybrid first? I was just the leash to keep you tied to these woods. His elite shadows boarded transport to Earth an hour ago. By the time you get to Atlanta, she'll already be his."

The rage that detonates inside me is blinding. I don't think. I twist my foot, cracking Valeria's ribs just enough to knock the wind out of her, knocking her unconscious.

"Trish! Prep the jet. Now!" I roar, turning away from the clearing and sprinting toward the rogue compound. The wind whips against my face as my inner wolf claws at my mind, desperate for the hunt. "We are going to Georgia. If the Primordial wants a war for this girl, I'll give him one."

CASSIE I flip through a few of the ancient spell-books I managed to sneak into my room. From what I can gather, the real trick to casting a good spell relies entirely on confidence and learning how to properly tune into your elemental chakra. Every witch has a distinct specialty, just like werewolves do. A gentle, sudden knock on the wood startles me. I scramble, quickly hiding the heavy book underneath my bed frame before sitting up straight and smoothing out my clothes. “Come in,” I call out, trying to sound as composed as possible. Nikolai pokes his head through the opening, offering a brief wave before stepping fully into the room. He stops just at the foot of my bed, a relaxed smile on his face. “I heard today is your first proper lesson. Let us take a walk,” he suggests, gesturing out toward the hallway. “It helps clear the mind. You humans call it a stroll, right?” I tilt my head, a small smirk playing on my lips. “Oh, so you know human terminology now?” “You’d be surpris

CASSIEWhat is wrong with me? How am I reading his mind? I am a liability to Nikolai, trapped in a world I don’t understand. It is too risky to be alone. Did they help me just because of what I can do? Because of that contract? Nikolai looks like he believes every lie that scary man put in his head. I need to get close to him to survive. So close that he ignores every warning against me. So close that he thinks only of protecting me, even if it kills him. We are supposed to be friends. It shouldn't be hard. A sharp knock rattles the door. It swings open to reveal Joel. Nikolai didn’t come. The mental attack must have drained him. Joel stands rigid, hands behind his back, his thick hair tied neatly away. “What of Nikolai?” My voice fails me, coming out as a breathless whisper. “Follow me.” “If Nikolai isn’t here, I am not moving an inch.” Panic flares in my chest. I look around for a weapon, but my magic is dormant. I have nothing to defend myself with. “

NIKOLAI The throne room is dead quiet, except the crackle of burning torches against the stone walls. I sit alone in the massive chair, the heavy gold crown resting on the armrest beside me. I don’t want it on my head. It feels less like a symbol of power and more like a target. I stare blankly out the high arched windows, but I am not seeing the dark, sprawling forests of the Ashen Horde territory. My mind is thousands of miles away, trapped back in that messy, shattered apartment in Atlanta. No matter how hard I try to shake it, my mind keeps replaying Corin’s voice. It loops in my head over and over, dripping with that cold, mocking venom. “Look at you, Alpha King... Too broken to mind-link your own pack. You think you’re hiding your curse, but the Primordial’s know exactly how weak you are. What would your pack do when they find out what the curse really is?” I press my hand against my chest, right over the thick bandages hidden beneath my tun

CASSIE “I will tag along,” Maeve’s tiny voice thunders through the air. She stands right before Nikolai, holding onto his hands with her face hidden behind that thick veil. I stand alone in front of a council of well-built men and women. My chest tightens as I look around at them; they honestly look like they eat people like me for breakfast. I feel incredibly small under their harsh glares. Yet, Nikolai’s eyes don’t leave mine. His gaze is heavy, tracking every breath I take. The rest of the room looks at me like they absolutely hate me, which is fair, seeing as I am some strange creature they can’t decipher. “No, you don’t,” Nikolai says to Maeve. He gently drops his eyes to her, and his gaze softens. “I will go with Trish and Joel, and then a few more guards if that will make you worry less.” I watch them closely, a sudden lump forming in my throat. It is either they are dating, good friends, or one person likes the other, I think to myself, they look really goo

NIKOLAI “She mind-linked me,” I blurt out. A heavy murmur breaks out in the meeting room. Shock plasters across my commanders' faces. “That is impossible,” Joel says, shaking his head. “Only a true Tether can do that,” Trish says. “Or it could be a trick by the Primordial King,” another commander mutters. "She could be a hidden bloodline from the primordials," another speculate. I raise my hand, and the murmuring dies down instantly. “None of us know what she is or why she is a hybrid," I say, resting my head against my hand on the armrest. "But if she can mind-link, I know she can do much more than that. We all know our mission. “She will train here. She will breathe the same air as us. She will learn our ways until we understand exactly what she is capable of. But remember, we can not afford to let her power awaken before we are ready. Get ready to kill because the Obsidian Apex pack won’t back down without a fight.” “Yes, sir,” they all bow curtly.

  • THE ROGUE KING UNDOING    Chapter 2: The Crimson Line

CASSIE Five hundred and forty-two dollars. That is exactly how much is left in my savings account after paying the interest on my dead mother's medical debt this month. If I don’t pay the main debt by next Friday, the loan sharks will come for my skin. Literally. "Find the bitch!" Marcus’s rough voice roars through the dark woods. "She couldn't have gone far!" My lungs burn like fire as I run through the thick bushes on the edge of Atlanta. Branches scratch my face and rip my faded denim waitress apron. Sweat drips down my neck, cold and sharp. Just minutes ago, I was inside the diner, trapped by Marcus and his men. To escape, I smashed a heavy glass coffee pot over Marcus's face right there at the diner counter and ran out the door. Now, three armed thugs are hunting me down like an animal. I dive behind the thick trunk of a rotten oak tree, slamming my back against the bark. I press a shaking hand over my mouth to stop my loud, gasping breaths. My other hand reach
