Elena’s POV

The penthouse was silent, but my head was screaming.

Alaric knew who I was. The secret I had carried for ten years—my real name, my real family—was gone in a single second. I felt naked, even though I was still wearing my blue silk dress. I looked into his amber eyes. They weren't cold anymore. They were burning.

"Why?" I whispered. My voice shook. "If you knew I was a Sterling, why did you bring me up here? Why didn't you call the police?"

Alaric stepped closer. He was so tall that I had to tilt my head back to see him. Without his shirt, he looked like a giant. The muscles in his chest were hard, and his skin was warm. He smelled like wood and expensive soap.

"The police are for boring criminals," Alaric said. His voice was deep and smooth, like honey. "You are not boring, Elena. You are the daughter of the man I hated the most. And yet, when you touched me in the ballroom, the pain in my head stopped. For the first time in months, I didn't feel like a monster."

He reached out and touched my cheek. His hand was large, covering half of my face. His thumb was rough against my skin.

"I don't believe you," I said. But I didn't move away. My body felt heavy. I hated him for what he did to my father, but my heart was beating so fast it hurt. "You are 'The Beast.' You don't feel anything but greed."

Alaric laughed. It was a dark, sad sound. "You think you know me because you read the newspapers? You know nothing about the weight I carry."

He turned around. The moonlight from the big glass windows hit his back.

I gasped. I dropped my small evening bag on the floor.

His back was covered in silver scars. They looked like deep scratches from a huge animal. But as I watched, the skin near the scars began to move. It looked like something was crawling underneath his muscles. His veins turned a dark, glowing purple.

"What... what is that?" I asked. I forgot to be angry. I was terrified.

"This is the Thorne Curse," Alaric said. He sounded like he was in pain. He gripped the edge of a marble table so hard the stone began to crack. "Every man in my family has it. It makes us strong. It makes us rich. But it also makes us lose our minds. The 'Beast' is real, Elena. And tonight, it wants to come out."

He turned back to me. His eyes were no longer amber. They were glowing bright gold. His breathing was loud and heavy.

"Run," he growled. "Go to the elevator. If you stay here, I cannot promise you will be safe."

I looked at the elevator. I looked at the silver key-card on the floor. If I ran now, I would be safe. I could go back to my small apartment and forget this ever happened.

But I looked at Alaric. He was shaking. He looked like he was fighting a war inside his own body. He looked lonely.

My father always told me that the Sterlings never leave someone in pain, even an enemy.

"No," I said. I took a step toward him.

"Elena, I am warning you," he hissed. His fingernails were growing longer, sharper.

"I'm not afraid of you," I lied. I reached out and put my hands on his shaking shoulders.

The moment my skin touched his, something incredible happened. The purple glow in his veins faded. The gold in his eyes dimmed back to amber. His heavy breathing slowed down. The "Beast" inside him seemed to go back to sleep.

Alaric let out a long, shaky breath. He leaned his forehead against my shoulder. He was heavy, but I held him up.

"How?" he whispered into my neck. "How are you doing that?"

"I don't know," I said. And I didn't. I just knew that he needed me.

We stood there for a long time. The city lights twinkled below us. The world felt very far away. My hatred for him was still there, deep inside me, but it was getting mixed up with something else. I felt a strange heat in my chest. I felt a pull toward him that I couldn't explain.

Alaric pulled back and looked at me. He looked at my lace mask. He reached up and slowly untied the ribbon at the back of my head.

The mask fell to the floor.

"You are even more beautiful than I remembered," he said.

He leaned down and kissed the corner of my mouth. It was a soft kiss, not like the hungry one in the elevator. It was a question.

I had two choices. I could push him away and demand my revenge. Or I could let go of the past for just one night.

I closed my eyes and pulled him closer.

The Midnight Contract

Alaric’s POV

My blood was usually like boiling oil. It burned my veins. It made my thoughts loud and violent. But Elena Sterling was like ice. Not the kind of ice that hurts, but the kind of ice that heals a burn.

When she touched me, the Beast went quiet. It didn't want to kill. It wanted to stay in the coolness of her shadow.

I knew she hated me. I knew she had a small knife hidden in her garter and a hacking tool in her bag. I knew she wanted to see me lose everything.

"Why are you staying?" I asked her. We were sitting on the edge of the large black bed. I was holding her small hand in mine. Her fingers were so delicate compared to my scarred ones.

Elena looked at the floor. "Because I need that key-card. And because... I want to know why you look at me like I'm the only person in the world."

I leaned in and smelled her hair. It smelled like the rain that falls before a storm. "You are the only person in the world right now, Elena. Everyone else wants something from me. They want my money or my power. You just want to see me fall."

"And you like that?" she asked, looking up at me.

"It’s honest," I said.

I moved my hand to her waist. I could feel her heart beating through the silk of her dress. It was fast, like a drum. I knew she was scared, but she wasn't leaving. She was a Sterling, alright. They were always too brave for their own good.

"If you stay tonight," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper, "the deal stands. I will give you the card. I will give you the files that can destroy my company. You can have your revenge."

Elena looked at me for a long time. "And what do you get, Alaric?"

"I get one night of peace," I said. "One night where I don't feel like a monster."

I kissed her neck, and she let out a small, soft sound. It wasn't a sound of hate. It was a sound of surrender.

I picked her up and laid her back on the silk pillows. The moonlight made her skin look like silver. She was the most dangerous thing in my life, and I was about to let her in.

"Don't regret this tomorrow, Elena," I warned her.

"I already regret it," she whispered. "But don't stop."

  • THE STERLING SPARK: LEGACY OF THE BEAST   HER FIRST BREATH

Elena's POVI heard his boots on the concrete before the door finished opening. He came through the roof access door and stopped. He looked terrible. His shirt was torn in three places, his nose had been bleeding recently, and the amber light in his skin was almost completely gone, just the faintest warm glow left, like the last coals of a fire that has been burning all night. He looked at me sitting against the low wall with Jax kneeling beside me, and something crossed his face that I had never seen from the Beast or from the King or from any version of Alaric Thorne I had encountered. It was simpler than all of those things. Rawer. He walked across the roof and sat down beside me on the cold concrete without hesitating and without saying anything grand. He just took my hand."I have you," he said."I know," I said.Another contraction hit and I squeezed his hand hard enough to make him pull a sharp breath. He did not pull away. He pressed closer and put his other hand against the s

  • THE STERLING SPARK: LEGACY OF THE BEAST   WHAT KINGS DO IN THE DARK

Alaric's POVThe basement of the Thorne Tower had no gold, no marble, no glass. There was nothing down here that was meant to impress anyone. Just raw concrete, steel pipes as thick as tree trunks, and the smell of something burning that had been burning for a while. Emergency lights had kicked on somewhere, covering everything in a dim red glow that made the air look thick.I ran through it like a man with nothing left to lose.I could feel the Black Spark before I found its source. It felt exactly the way the Thorne curse had felt in my blood before Elena healed it. That same dark, hungry vibration that had lived inside me for thirty years. But this version was bigger. More concentrated. More angry. This was what happened when you took that kind of energy, pressurized it over months, and aimed it at the bones of a building.Victoria had been patient. She had always been patient. I had spent years underestimating her because she fought with words and plans rather than with fists, and

  • THE STERLING SPARK: LEGACY OF THE BEAST   The Man Who Ran

The roof was cold. That was the first thing I noticed. Not the smoke from the crashed helicopter. Not the crack spreading slowly across the concrete near the wreckage. Not the sound of the city below, finally quiet after months of living under the shadow of the Spires. Just the cold. The kind that settles into your bones and refuses to leave.I was on my hands and knees on the concrete floor of the Thorne Tower rooftop. The pain had arrived fast and without warning, the way the worst things in life always do. My fingers were pressed flat against the rough ground, and I could feel the building shaking beneath my palms. Somewhere deep below me, in the stomach of the tower, the Black Spark was still building pressure. I could feel it the same way you feel a coming storm. A heaviness. A wrongness in the air that your body understands before your brain does. And my daughter had decided that right now, in the middle of all of this, was the perfect time to arrive."Okay," I said out loud to

  • THE STERLING SPARK: LEGACY OF THE BEAST   IRON VULTURE

Elena’s POVThe morning air was cold, but the city was burning with a new kind of energy. The red haze of the Spires was gone, replaced by the natural gold of a rising sun. But high above the streets, a dark shape was cutting through the clouds. It was Victoria’s private helicopter—a sleek, black machine that looked like a bird of prey. It was moving fast, heading toward the mountains beyond the city limits."She’s getting away," I whispered, my voice raspy from the battle at the cooling tower.Alaric stood beside me, his hand resting on my shoulder. His grip was firm, a silent promise that he wouldn't let her go. "She has nowhere to run, Elena. The people have seen the light. The Council is broken. But a cornered wolf is the most dangerous kind."I felt the baby kick again—a sharp, rhythmic thrumming that felt like a drumbeat. The Sterling Spark inside me wasn't just a power anymore; it was a living part of my soul that was growing stronger every hour. I looked at the black helic

  • THE STERLING SPARK: LEGACY OF THE BEAST   FALL OF THE GIANT

Alaric’s POVThe West District was the industrial heart of the city. It was a place of giant chimneys, spinning turbines, and massive tanks of fuel. It was also the most dangerous place to fight. One stray spark, and the whole district would go up in a ball of fire. The West Spire was built right into the main cooling tower of the primary power plant. It was surrounded by a forest of electrical wires and buzzing transformers."The shadow is already there," Elena said, pointing. The giant monster had wrapped itself around the cooling tower. It looked like a massive, dark snake. It was drinking the electricity straight from the city’s grid. The red eyes of the beast were now hundreds of feet wide, glowing with a terrifying power."We can't get close," I said. "The air is electrified. If we touch those wires, we'll be cooked.""Look!" Elena pointed to the ground.A group of people was already there. It wasn't Jax's rebels. It was a group of workers in grey jumpsuits. They were hol

  • THE STERLING SPARK: LEGACY OF THE BEAST   HARMONY OF TWO WORLDS

Alaric’s POVI was drowning in shadows. For every shadow-guard I broke, two more took its place. My knuckles were bleeding, and my amber glow was flickering like a dying candle. I had been fighting for an hour, and my body was screaming for me to stop."Alaric! They're breaking through the north line!" Jax shouted over the radio."Hold them!" I roared back.I grabbed a shadow-guard by the throat and slammed it into the pavement. I felt the darkness trying to creep into my own mind. The giant monster above the Thorne Tower was looking down at me. It wasn't just a shadow; it was a hungry god. It wanted the Thorne King. It wanted me to give up and become part of the darkness again. You were born for this, Alaric, the monster's voice echoed in my head. You are the Beast. Why do you fight for the light that will only burn you?"Because the light doesn't want to own me!" I shouted at the sky. "The light wants me to be free!"I felt a sudden warmth in my chest. It was the silver thre

  • THE STERLING SPARK: LEGACY OF THE BEAST   THE HOSPITAL

Elena’s POVThe black fire did not feel like a normal fire. It did not burn my skin with heat. Instead, it burned my mind with cold thoughts. As I stepped through the hole I had made in the dark flames, I felt a heavy weight on my heart. Every step I took toward the hospital doors felt like walkin
