Zoe had gone to get her hair done at the salon while I decided to remain since it was a little cold. I pulled the blanket tightly around my body, which was still healing. My mind was as though a knife had been taken to every memory and left pieces scattered at every angle. I didn't feel like talking or even facing anyone. But I was fed up with feeling like a victim. I looked at my phone's screen and assumed that it was Daniel trying to reach me at first so I ignored it. Then it buzzed again. From a distance, I looked at the screen expecting to see Daniel or his mother's call, but instead it was from an unknown number. UNKNOWN: Hi Ms. Brown. This is Mr. Lewis Gray from AC STUDIO'S. I believe you received our offer last week. We’d still be honored to have you join us—starting immediately, if you’re ready. I stared at the message. AC STUDIO'S I pulled out my eyes remembering how bad Daniel used to mock them. He even went to the extent of asking me not to take their offer. I clicked the email attached, and there it was—the offer letter I never opened. Something that had a promotion, triple salary, and my own department. My heart hardened as I wondered how Daniel didn't want me to have this life “Take it,” I whispered to myself, surprised at my own voice. Before I could overthink, a knock sounded. Sharp. Repetitive. Aggressive. My heart dropped. Daniel. Zoe wasn’t home. He banged again. “Scarlett! Open the door! I know you're in there.” I couldn't believe he still had the nerve to come back after everything. Daniel Cross must be dreaming to think I'd dare open that door. I walked up closely and started to listen. “Scarl, honey, please…we can make this right,” he said in a cracked tone but I didn't care. “Stop it Daniel, you need to leave," I said through the door. "I'm not going anywhere. You can't just disappear like that Scarlett. You even blocked me and I'm losing my mind—” My jaw clenched. “It's your child that you lost,” I corrected him roughly. "Not your mind!” Silence reigned for some time A long, guilty silence that none of us could explain. “I didn’t know,” he finally whispered. “You should have told me deserved to know—" A laugh escaped me, bitter and sharp. One who had so much pain converted strength. “You didn’t even deserve the truth. You deserve exactly what you gave me—lies, betrayal, and pain.” “Scarlett—” The door opened behind me so suddenly I jumped—but it wasn’t Zoe. For a moment, I thought he had entered, but it was someone else. A tall man with wide shoulders, sun-browned skin, and a calm look stood in the hallway. He wore a fitted suit, sleeves rolled, tie loose as he’d rushed straight from work. His eyes flickered from me to Daniel. “Is this man troubling you?” he asked, his deep voice controlled but dangerous. Daniel straightened. “Who the hell are you?” The stranger stepped slightly ahead of me, blocking Daniel from view. “I’m Lewis Gray,” he said. “CEO AC STUDIO'S” Daniel’s face fell. I could tell he was wishing his ears lied. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he muttered. Lewis didn’t bother to speak to him again—only to me. “Ms. Brown,” he said gently. “I was in the area and thought I’d deliver your contract personally. A woman of your skill deserves more than an email.” I blinked. He… came here? Himself? My heart thumped painfully—this was the first time a man had spoken to me without entitlement, pity, or manipulation since everything began. Daniel swallowed hard before saying, “Scarlett, you’re not seriously considering working for some—” Lewis turned his head slightly. “A man who values her?” Silence burned between them. Daniel scoffed. “She’s my wife.” I stepped out from behind Lewis. “I never got to be.” My voice didn’t shake. For the first time in days—maybe months—I felt like myself again. Daniel reached out, trying to touch me, and Lewis instantly blocked his hand mid-air. “Don’t,” he warned. Daniel's frown lines were so visible as though he was about to throw a punch. Before anything else could happen Zoe pulled into the parking lot only to jump out running towards us as though a war was coming. “What the hell is happening here?” she asked before looking at Daniel and asking what he was doing here. He didn't say anything but Lewis responded. “Your friend was about to sign her future,” Lewis said simply before adding, “Unless someone here has a problem with that.” Daniel’s eyes darted between all three of us—he was outnumbered, outmatched, and out of excuses. “This isn’t over,” he muttered before walking away, humiliated. Good. For once I wasn’t the one walking away broken. When he finally disappeared, my legs gave out with relief, and Zoe rushed to steady me. Lewis handed me a clean, sleek folder. “Take your time reading it,” he said softly. “But Scarlett… I hope you say yes.” I swallowed, staring at him. This was it. My first step out of the ashes. “Thank you,” I whispered. He nodded once and walked away, leaving his cologne, confidence, and a spark of something unfamiliar in the air. Hope. Zoe squeezed my hand, smiling. “Well,” she whispered, “that was… a moment.” I opened the folder. AC STUDIO'S Contract — Scarlett Brown — Department Head I smiled for the first time in days. “I’m taking it,” I said. And for the first time since everything fell apart. I felt like the beginning of something new.CHAPTER 55Scarlett George and I stood on the balcony of Hotel Strand, admiring the view of the beach. While everyone was inside having fun.“This champagne tastes good Scarlett, are you sure you don't want to have some?" he asked, smiling at me.“No, I'm fine," I responded.“You've changed so much and I hope you liked the President's gift," he said when I suddenly looked at him.“How did you know? Wait are you the one that—" “No, I didn't do anything. I just told him who's behind the suits that make me glow and he made a move without my knowledge. I'm so happy for you," he said and I couldn't believe how much he was willing to sacrifice.“George. You…you're so unbelievable. You don't know how much this means to me,” I held his hand."Don't worry, Scarlett, more is coming. You're not going to believe how much more is waiting for you,” George smiled. We made our way to the hall and found that everyone was just busy having the best time. Mr. Black kept calling me to introduce me to so
CHAPTER 54Scarlett I got into my car and drove to BLACK STUDIOS. There were a couple of materials I needed to take home, so I didn't even mind going since I was sure everyone would have knocked off already.I drove for a few minutes and was at the building already. I got out of my car and then made my way inside the building. Just as I was about to close the door I heard Nia calling my name.“Scarlett, did I see you coming out of that Benz?" she whispered when she got closer.“Oh, that's right. I just got myself that baby," I smiled while she pulled out her eyeballs as though I just said something bad.“Are…are you being for real?” she asked."Yup or will you only believe it if I show you my keys?” I asked, swinging them in her face."Oh my Scarlett I just can't tell you how happy I am, congratulations. You honestly deserve all this,” she rushed into my arms.“Thank you. I've got to get a few things in the workroom. You can go look for a cab at the rank if you don't mind," I joked b
CHAPTER 53Scarlett I took a deep breath the moment Damien walked out of my office and then stood up to smell the roses the president's PA brought me. I couldn't even remember the last time someone gave me those. I could tell they cost enough to get someone like Daniel to kiss my shoes or even Damien since he was a disgusting Boss.“Oh my goodness, Scarlett, you'll not believe where your party is going to be held," Nia walked in, about to close my door when I asked her not to.“I doubt I'd make it. Please leave that open. I need to get somewhere. Please take care of everything in the workroom." I stood up, about to walk out, when Mr. Black came in.“Ms. Brown, may I have a word with you?" he asked, and I nodded before looking at Nia, who was probably annoyed, before making my way to the workroom.“Is everything OK Sir?" I asked him.“Yes, but I don't know if we're willing to let you go at such short notice. I've received the news that the president would like you to handle his outfi
CHAPTER 52Scarlett “We were going to tell you, but this just needed a big celebration; therefore, I've decided to take everyone to celebrate this wonderful achievement after work," Mr. Black announced, and everyone clapped their hands with excitement.I was so emotional at that moment. For a moment it felt like I was dreaming. I just won the president's heart with my King Men's suit piece, which I sent with his PA after it was requested that we needed to send outfits he could wear to Italy.I swear, I wasn't sure what to send, as this was a president we're talking about here. The King piece suits were all I had, so I just added a few things to them and handed them over. I was certain the president had many fashion designers at his beck and call. So if he didn't like my suits. Another designer would definitely get him something that matched his likes. After he chose my suits and was pleased with my skills, he sent me a brand new Benz and a sum of money I would have to work three tim
CHAPTER 51Scarlett It's been about three days since I sent my resignation letter, and neither Mr. Black nor Mr. Pierce has responded. I'm just not used to working under ungrateful persons. I moved this side for peace not a second wave of torture. I heard my doorbell ring, so I made my way downstairs in my nightgown. I was sure it was the delivery guy after what happened at the office. I don't think Nia would come to my place.I reached the door and slightly opened it to greet the person on the other side when my smile faded the moment I noticed that it was Damien Pierce. Not again I said at the back of my head about closing the door in his face when he pushed it back and then entered. Goodness, I was in a night gown.“I'll scream, sir, what are you doing?" I asked, taking a few steps back, though he was coming towards me.“Agh, Ms. Brown, you need to calm down. I'm not that type of man. I just came to let you know that I…I mean, we have rejected your resignation and would like yo
CHAPTER 50Daniel I couldn't take it anymore. The emptiness in the penthouse was going to consume me if I didn't find Scarlett so I made my way to Zoe's place even though she threatened to call the cops if I went there again.I knocked at her door but there was no response. I made up my mind to stand there till she came to answer.“I've got to be dreaming. Daniel Cross, what the hell are you doing here?” She shook her head."Zoe…I just want to know where Scarlett is please don't do this to me. I want to talk to her and make things right," I responded but she just laughed.“What things are those Daniel? It's almost months since you guys broke up and Scarlett is doing great without you. I wouldn't dare tell you where she is, even if it meant saving your life. OK, now get going because I've plans for the evening," she said about shutting the door in my face, but my arm blocked her.“Zoe, please, if it's about money, just say the price. I'll have it sent right now. I just need Scarlett,"
