Zoe had gone to get her hair done at the salon while I decided to remain since it was a little cold. I pulled the blanket tightly around my body, which was still healing. My mind was as though a knife had been taken to every memory and left pieces scattered at every angle. I didn't feel like talking or even facing anyone. But I was fed up with feeling like a victim. I looked at my phone's screen and assumed that it was Daniel trying to reach me at first so I ignored it. Then it buzzed again. From a distance, I looked at the screen expecting to see Daniel or his mother's call, but instead it was from an unknown number. UNKNOWN: Hi Ms. Brown. This is Mr. Lewis Gray from AC STUDIO'S. I believe you received our offer last week. We’d still be honored to have you join us—starting immediately, if you’re ready. I stared at the message. AC STUDIO'S I pulled out my eyes remembering how bad Daniel used to mock them. He even went to the extent of asking me not to take their offer. I clicked the email attached, and there it was—the offer letter I never opened. Something that had a promotion, triple salary, and my own department. My heart hardened as I wondered how Daniel didn't want me to have this life “Take it,” I whispered to myself, surprised at my own voice. Before I could overthink, a knock sounded. Sharp. Repetitive. Aggressive. My heart dropped. Daniel. Zoe wasn’t home. He banged again. “Scarlett! Open the door! I know you're in there.” I couldn't believe he still had the nerve to come back after everything. Daniel Cross must be dreaming to think I'd dare open that door. I walked up closely and started to listen. “Scarl, honey, please…we can make this right,” he said in a cracked tone but I didn't care. “Stop it Daniel, you need to leave," I said through the door. "I'm not going anywhere. You can't just disappear like that Scarlett. You even blocked me and I'm losing my mind—” My jaw clenched. “It's your child that you lost,” I corrected him roughly. "Not your mind!” Silence reigned for some time A long, guilty silence that none of us could explain. “I didn’t know,” he finally whispered. “You should have told me deserved to know—" A laugh escaped me, bitter and sharp. One who had so much pain converted strength. “You didn’t even deserve the truth. You deserve exactly what you gave me—lies, betrayal, and pain.” “Scarlett—” The door opened behind me so suddenly I jumped—but it wasn’t Zoe. For a moment, I thought he had entered, but it was someone else. A tall man with wide shoulders, sun-browned skin, and a calm look stood in the hallway. He wore a fitted suit, sleeves rolled, tie loose as he’d rushed straight from work. His eyes flickered from me to Daniel. “Is this man troubling you?” he asked, his deep voice controlled but dangerous. Daniel straightened. “Who the hell are you?” The stranger stepped slightly ahead of me, blocking Daniel from view. “I’m Lewis Gray,” he said. “CEO AC STUDIO'S” Daniel’s face fell. I could tell he was wishing his ears lied. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he muttered. Lewis didn’t bother to speak to him again—only to me. “Ms. Brown,” he said gently. “I was in the area and thought I’d deliver your contract personally. A woman of your skill deserves more than an email.” I blinked. He… came here? Himself? My heart thumped painfully—this was the first time a man had spoken to me without entitlement, pity, or manipulation since everything began. Daniel swallowed hard before saying, “Scarlett, you’re not seriously considering working for some—” Lewis turned his head slightly. “A man who values her?” Silence burned between them. Daniel scoffed. “She’s my wife.” I stepped out from behind Lewis. “I never got to be.” My voice didn’t shake. For the first time in days—maybe months—I felt like myself again. Daniel reached out, trying to touch me, and Lewis instantly blocked his hand mid-air. “Don’t,” he warned. Daniel's frown lines were so visible as though he was about to throw a punch. Before anything else could happen Zoe pulled into the parking lot only to jump out running towards us as though a war was coming. “What the hell is happening here?” she asked before looking at Daniel and asking what he was doing here. He didn't say anything but Lewis responded. “Your friend was about to sign her future,” Lewis said simply before adding, “Unless someone here has a problem with that.” Daniel’s eyes darted between all three of us—he was outnumbered, outmatched, and out of excuses. “This isn’t over,” he muttered before walking away, humiliated. Good. For once I wasn’t the one walking away broken. When he finally disappeared, my legs gave out with relief, and Zoe rushed to steady me. Lewis handed me a clean, sleek folder. “Take your time reading it,” he said softly. “But Scarlett… I hope you say yes.” I swallowed, staring at him. This was it. My first step out of the ashes. “Thank you,” I whispered. He nodded once and walked away, leaving his cologne, confidence, and a spark of something unfamiliar in the air. Hope. Zoe squeezed my hand, smiling. “Well,” she whispered, “that was… a moment.” I opened the folder. AC STUDIO'S Contract — Scarlett Brown — Department Head I smiled for the first time in days. “I’m taking it,” I said. And for the first time since everything fell apart. I felt like the beginning of something new.CHAPTER 229Scarlett *Months later*My pregnancy is now in its last semester and I can barely do anything. I find myself sleeping or eating. The amount of weight I had put on was one I wish I could still keep I made my way to the living room and found it dark and empty when I switched on the lights. No one was there, not even the guard. That was weird. I called for the maids but no one was coming. There was no way I was alone in the mansion. It wasn't like Aunt to leave without informing me. I made my way into the kitchen and found that it was empty. A part of me was just worried. Something felt off. I called my security, but no one was answering. I dialed my aunt's phone only to hear it ringing in the sitting room.I honestly didn't know what to think. I made my way upstairs but didn't find anyone there. Now it felt even scarier.“Scarlett!" I heard Aldric calling my name in a serious tone.“Babe," I responded, rushing to descend the staircase only to slow down halfway when my ey
CHAPTER 228Aldric I had to make a very difficult decision after I told my mother about Melissa being behind my brother's murder. We all wanted justice therefore united to make everything so convincing that Melissa wouldn't even know that I was playing her.Scarlett and I made up the night before I started devoting all my attention to Melissa. I knew everything would work out as long as we all stuck to the plan. The days and energy I spent trying to cage Melissa were just the worst. I couldn't even picture myself wanting her in my life. She tried to cover her scales so deeply, but I was vigilant throughout everything. Her phone calls with Eva, Daniel, Damien, and Nia. I was listening to everything while she was under the impression that I was fast asleep. The worst part was remembering that I was spending nights next to my brother's murderer. It sometimes just made me want to give her a hot slap but I didn't want to ruin the surprise. With every opportunity I had, I tapped her phone
CHAPTER 227Daniel I was in my suite having a great time when I heard a loud knock on my door. I didn't remember wanting room service, so I asked who it was before Nia walked in.“Hey, what are you doing here?" I asked her."I'm here to put you in your damn place,” Nia replied while I just began to laugh."I'm not in the mood OK. What are you doing?”" I'm not alone. Someone else is here to see you,” Nia said before the door opened and Scarlett walked in with Zoe and Aldric.“What the hell?" I looked at them.“Don't you dare play shocked here Daniel. Did you really think I wouldn't know you were planning to get me back?" Scarlett asked with a serious look on her face.“Get you? I don't know what you're talking about," I answered before she played a video of Melissa and me discussing how to separate them.“I know what that sounds like but trust me. I had pure intentions, Scarlett. I would never hurt you I—" Two hot slaps landed on my cheeks. I could tell that something bad was happe
CHAPTER 226Melissa Karina walked into the room with her arms crossed. I didn't understand what she was doing there, but one thing was for certain: trouble was stirred.“Babe what's going on?" I asked Aldric with a confused look on my face.“You tell me Melissa," he answered with a cold expression.“I told you that you would regret messing with me right? Now look at you," Karina smiled while I pretended not to know about anything.“Guard!" Aldric said and then his driver walked in. The same man whose face looked like that of the person who knew about what I did to Elias.“Yes, sir," the man said as he walked in.“Do you know this face, Melissa?" Aldric asked me.“Babe what are you saying? This is your driver right?" I responded.“Melissa, I'm not playing with you. Do you remember this man from the day you murdered my brother!” Aldric shouted, and I knew trouble was up, and I was far from my defenses."No I…I don't know him or what you're talking about," I stood my ground.“Great," Al
CHAPTER 225Melissa Aldric and I arrived at the penthouse he bought me. For the first time, I could truly feel that I had Aldric where I wanted him. It was obvious that his money was now in my hands. I smiled with excitement every time I looked at myself in the mirror. He had gone to take a shower so I dialed Eva's number.I told her everything and she seemed worried. I honestly didn't have time to be scared. I had the money right in my face, so what was there to be scared about? The moment I heard footsteps coming downstairs I quickly ended the call and looked at Aldric with a smile. He returned it before coming to hug me.“You seem so happy," he whispered.“You're just so amazing, Aldric. You are blowing my mind," I looked at him.“Trust me this is nothing compared to what I'll give you once we're married. You are my world now. You have honestly fought for our love,” he said while I blushed."Did you say something about marriage?” I lifted my brows."Yes, I've made up my mind and
CHAPTER 224Scarlett I was in the garden with everyone when Aldric's Mom showed up again. I didn't even feel the need to look at her with bad eyes. One could tell that she was really sorry for everything that she had done. In her hands was a basket that had some flowers and fruits. “Scarlett, my child, I brought you and the babies this," she said, handing it to me, and I gladly took the basket. “Thank you Mrs. Stone," I smiled before she asked me to call her mother. That would be nice but I wasn't used to that yet. We asked her to take a seat and join our little conversation. It later became obvious that she and Aunt had more knowledge on the topic. Time began to fly so fast that my aunt pulled Zoe, Gina, and Praisely away so that they could help her cook while I remained with Aldric's Mom. But Gina was just going for snacks. There was silence for a few minutes after they had left before I looked up and realized that Mrs. Stone was looking at me strongly. It was as if she wante
