Chapter 10

Chapter 10

My gaze drifted from the ceiling to the door of my room when it opened. Calla went in first while holding Calgary by his hand. She's even carrying her black furry cat as she smiled sweetly at me.

Calgary touched his jaw, a little shy, probably because his daughter requested to see me. Calla didn't bother me anyway. She's a nice kid and I knew how it felt like to not have my mom around, so I pulled myself up and motioned my hand to call her. "Come here, Calla."

She let go of her father's hand then walked towards me. Calla doesn't talk. I still didn't know why yet but I made a mental note to ask Lynel tomorrow.

When I heard Calgary clear his throat, I looked at him and waited for him to speak.

"She wants to sleep here... with you."

Calla stared at me as if she was begging me to say yes. I smiled back at her and tucked a few strands of her brown hair towards the back of her ear. "Of course, you can. It would be nice to have a roommate who's really sweet."

Her innocent eyes glistened with joy. She put her cat down and ran towards Calgary to hug him before she pushed him out and shut the door. We both giggled at what she did before I helped her get on the bed.

"Alright, time for bed, Calla."

She nodded and put her cat on the end of the bed before she laid next to me and hugged me. I froze for a second, but when I realized that Calla was probably looking for her mother's presence, my heart hurt for her. Damn, I didn't want to cry but I remembered when I lost Mom and Dad. I had no one I could share my pain with. No one was there for me to hold me at night as I cried.

Nobody ever offered me a hug...

I sniffed and wiped my tears before I sang my Mom's lullaby. When Calla finally drifted to sleep, I suddenly remembered Alpha Lawrence. He's probably at the cemetery. I wonder what he's eating when everyone isn't around?

If I was so heartless, I'd probably wish he'd starve to death for everything he's done to me, but I knew Mom wouldn't be happy if that would happen.

I sighed. When I was sure Calla had already fallen asleep, I carefully went out of the room. Calgary didn't seem to be home, so I went down the stairs and left the house. I hid and tried to check if someone would see me, but when I noticed that pretty much everyone was in the pack house, I made my way to the woods with a heart loudly banging inside my chest.

Auror warned me of what Calgary might do to us if I sneaked out and checked on Alpha Lawrence, but I continued to walk until I was a meter away from the border. The cold breeze of the night sipped into my skin so I had to rub my palms on my arms.

Damn it. Why didn't i wear something longer before I went out to do this stupid idea?

I blew out some air and looked back, making sure no one was following me, but my body crashed onto a familiar strong chest before I even stepped outside the borders.

My eyes widened as I looked up to meet Calgary's angry pools. His jaw clenched as he held me by my wrist, but before he could even drag me back to the village, I spoke.

"I'm not trying to run, alright? There's nothing left for me in Zenios."

"So where the hell are you going, hmm?" His hold on me tightened a little.

I swallowed the pool of saliva in my mouth. "I was going to my mother's grave to check on Alpha Lawrence. He..." I looked away as my chest tightened for a reason I couldn't decipher. "I just wanna make sure he's alright."

His hold on my wrist loosened. "He wouldn't come with us even if you'll try to convince him."

"I won't." I hugged myself as the cold, woody breeze blew harder. "I just wanna make sure he still eats."

Calgary sighed. I froze in my spot when he removed his denim jacket and put it on me. His scent caressed my nostrils, offering a sense of security, as if, as long as he was near me, no one could ever inflict me pain.

I gulped while trying to shoo away what I just thought. When Calgary spoke, I tried my best to dodge his gaze.

"Let's go then."

"You... don't have to come. I swear I'll come back. You don't have to leave the pack meeting," I insisted, but he held me by my nape and made me walk with him.

"The meeting was over. We just assigned additional deltas on every side of the border. We gotta make sure even the graves will be well-guarded."

"Why do you think they're doing this? Digging graves is so disrespectful."

"Ever heard about ancestral magic?" he asked.

I nodded as I met his eyes. "What about that?"

"Well, those who practice magic believe that a soul is more powerful when it's in the spirit realm. Since witches and werewolves belong to the same bloodline, they probably think that through harnessing the powers of the dead leaders, they could connect to the entire spirit realm, including to the very first werewolves."

Chills trailed down my spine as realization hit me. "Do you think they'd use our own ancestors against us?"

Calgary's face darkened. "Most likely, but there's something else I'm getting afraid of."

"What is it?"

His jaw clenched as he took in a sharp breath. "That they'd resurrect those on the other side to build a new and unified army of witches and werewolves that will focus on one thing."

I gulped. "And that is?"

He met my eyes in a cold way. "To dominate the world and turn humans into slaves, and once that happens, even we might end up bowing down to them..."
