LOGINChapter 2
Selene's POV I parked the car and quickly got out, making my way to the house in a sprint.Since I got the news of the pregnancy, I've felt nothing but joy and peace. The thought of finally being a mother was refreshing.
The door was ajar when I got closer and I frowned. Who could have left it open like this?
Why was the door opened? I wondered as I got closer to the house. I could have sworn I closed it, locked it twice even before leaving.
Had I forgotten to lock it maybe? Could there be a bugler in there? I stood on my tiptoes as I made my way into the house.“Hello?” I called out but no one answered back. A wave of dread and fear me and I searched for my phone in my purse ready to call Hunter when some sounds coming from the stairs reached my ears.
I paused, my phone in hand and listened again. Still, I heard the same sounds, grunts and moans as if one were in pain.
Panic gripped me tight and I flew up the stairs, adrenaline kicking in fast.
Once I got to the top of the stairs, I stopped and began panting hard, exhausted from that tiny run.
My knuckles were white from holding onto the phone so hard but it was only a precaution.
I had the police on speed just in case and I needed to do was dial the number.
This wasn't how I envisaged this day would go. After getting the news, I thought I'd come back home and cook Hunter a nice dinner then dress up in one of those lingerie things he loved so he could eat after eating.
But….
As I walked towards my bedroom, the one Hunter and I slept in, the sounds became more audible and I could make out two voices.
There was no way that was coming from inside the room and together at that.
This was Hunter's house as much as it was mine so of course I wasn't surprised to hear his voice but why was I hearing his voice here at home by this time of day?
And with my cousin, Anna?
He hadn't followed me to the hospital because of an important meeting at the office. He said he'd be swamped with work all day so why was he even here right now?
I swallowed and took cautious steps towards our bedroom front where the sounds were coming from.
A sense of dread hit me as I realized the sounds I had been hearing were moans and grunts from pleasure, not from fear or pain as I had presumed before.
Tears began to roll down my cheeks even as I reached the door.
This couldn't be happening right?Perhaps I was dreaming. That was the only reasonable explanation I could come up with for why those two would be moaning like that from my matrimonial bedroom.
A place that was only meant for Hunter and I.
I pushed the door open and my heart sank. Even if the sounds of their grunts and moans should have prepared me better for the scene in front of me, I still felt a sharp piercing my chest.
“What the hell?” I shrieked, speaking for the first time. They hadn't even realized before now that they had company.
At the sound of my voice, they turned and their eyes widened in shock at being caught together.
Anna avoided my gaze but not before I noticed the guilt swimming in her eyes.
*What's the meaning of this and how long has it been going on?” I was fuming and my joy from the pregnancy was now replaced with a sense of loss at this obvious betrayal.
“Baby I can explain,” Hunter started to say, struggling to cover up and I snorted in disgust.
“You told me you had a meeting, Hunt, what happened to that? And Anna, weren't you out of town??!”
They both exchanged glances and Anna stepped forward, still refusing to meet my eyes.
“This was...let me explain Selene.”
“You weren't supposed to find out this way,” Hunter added and a humourless laugh bubbled out of me.
“I wasn't supposed to…..are you kidding me??! You two have no business having sex together. Hunter you're my husband and Anna, gosh Anna I took you like a sister. How could you betray me like this?”
Hunter shook his head looking sober. “I really wanted to tell you about this myself, Selene.” He sighed and reached for something inside the bedside cupboards. “Here, it's something I've been meaning to give you for a while.”
My hands were shaking as I reached out for the stack of papers in his hand. “What is this?”
He shrugged and I looked down at them. Fresh tears welled up in my eyes as I realized what I was holding.
“Divorce papers?”
“Yes Selene, our marriage has been over for sometime now and I've fallen out of love for you. We can't keep pretending to be happy when I've already moved on.”
This couldn't be happening, I thought as laughter bubbled out of me uncontrollably.
How could this be my life? On the same day I got the best news, I also got the worst?
“Where are the cameras?” I asked after I managed to stop laughing. Surely this was a prank.
“This is not a game Selene, just sign the papers because we're done.”
I scoffed and reached for a pen on the bed. Perhaps he had left it there but I didn't care and scribbled my signature on the last page. “Did you think I'd be hurt by this?” I asked, trying to act nonchalant when my heart was bleeding on the inside.
“Selene I'm really sorry, he said he was going to leave you and I….”
“Shut up Anna, you don't get to talk.” I turned to face Hunter again. “So you asked me for a child and then when I finally get pregnant this is what you do?”
He let out a laugh. “Selene that baby is something you have always wanted, not me. In fact you were obsessed with the idea of being a mother.”
“So now what? How do you plan to handle the baby? I'm carrying your child Hunter!”
“Me? You're the one who's pregnant.” He shrugged. “That's your problem Selene. You're the one who's pregnant so deal with it how you see fit.”
He reached over and snatched the papers from my hands. “With this signed, I have nothing binding me to you.”
The words hit me hard and I staggered back. I couldn't believe how cruel he was.
“Are you saying I should abort this child? Is that it?” I carried on stupidly.
“I don't care what you do Selene. Keep it or don't, that's your problem now.”
“But…’
“We're done here.” He walked towards me and pushed me backwards until my back hit the door, hard. “According to this agreement, you won't be taking anything from here so I suggest you start stripping because if I remember correctly, I bought you everything you have on.”
Anna’s povI laughed, and it came out a bit crazed. “You really think you can stop me forever?”She didn’t even bat an eyelash. “If that’s what it takes.”My hands curled into fists. “You’re making a mistake.”Her voice dropped, calm but cutting. “The only mistake is thinking you can bully your way into getting what you want.”That hurt more than it should. I blinked and for a second all I could hear was the sound of my own breath, and the blood whooshing in my ears. I hated that she wasn’t caving, that she could stand there like a wolf and act like she could take me on.“You made a terrible mistake coming back here Anna,” she chuckled. “You can’t show up and think you can treat me like you used to. I’m not that little human anymore. I’m different.”“You roll around with wolves and act like you're a wolf. You must be a joker.”She got close to me and i could see that her aura had changed. Something about her scared me a bit. Almost like if she actually had a wolf, she would tear me ap
Anna’s povI was boiling inside. I could feel my rage rising to heavy heights as I walked out of the room. How could he talk to me like that and treat me like I didn’t matter?I didn’t care as I slammed my heels on the floor and walked loud enough for my heels to echo in the hall.Let them hear. Let them know I was not done.By the time I’d reached the far end of the corridor, my freaking jaw ached from how hard I’d been clenching it. And then I let loose with this… noise. A low growl and grunt that echoed within me.I drew in a breath that came a little too fast. A few servants hurried by, heads down, skirts swishing. I could tell they were wondering what was wrong with me but I didn’t care. I would teach Selene a lesson.Speaking of her, where was she? I wouldn’t go without seeing her.If she thought she could just waltz into this pack, into my place, and stay here without feeling the weight of me breathing down her neck… she was wrong.I made my way toward the gardens because that
Dante’s pov“I allied us with the rogue for a reason,” I said. It wasn’t a defensive tone because it wasn’t a question—it was a fact. “And I’ll explain it. But not here, and not now.”Tomas kept his gaze locked on mine. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair as he sniffed and cleaned his nose.“I just hope you have a good reason for this. I swear to the gods, you should have a better reason for this.”“Sure,” was all I could say.I didn’t wait for anything else: the guards were nearly done with the gifts, and I got into the back of the car, palms cool against leather. When the door shut, it did so with a sound that seemed to eat some of the noise outside but my head was too full.“Where to sir?” My driver said as I waved him forward.“The packhouse. I have a meeting there.”He nodded and drove through the roads. The ride back home was longer than usual. All I could think of was Tomas’s words. As much as I understood his point, I needed to hold on tight to my own beliefs. No need t
Dante’s pov“No trouble. Quite the opposite. I’m here to inform you that we need not be enemies, you and I. We could be allies.” The word hung there like a shaft of dust in the air between us as I cocked my head.“I don’t take rogues into my pack,” I said evenly, each word measured and spoken.“Mm, I thought you’d say that.” His smile didn’t shake. “But I also thought you’re not an idiot. You realize that sometimes… life shoves a situation at you where the only person you can really count on isn’t the friend who’s supposed to be there at your back, but the enemy who’s always been living up to their potential for watching it.”I said nothing right off the bat. I kind of wanted to just walk back to my pack. But another part tuned in.He took my silence as permission. “You’ll come to me eventually,” he purred. I couldn’t claim that I’d ever had much cause to dislike the guy previously. We hadn’t exactly moved in the same circles: he kept to his corners, and I kept on trucking through my
Anna’s povThe old man’s lips curled up into a knowing smirk. “Protection disappears when loyalties change, and trust me…” something sinister danced in his eyes as he leaned closer, “…loyalties are easier to change than you might believe.”I was flooded with a sharp rush of curiosity but I kept my face blank.“And why would that be?” I asked. “I thought Elders were always to stay neutral and support their alphas.”He chuckled, low and dry. “Neutrality is a luxury, Anna. One that doesn’t exist when the wrong person is sitting at the Alpha’s side.”I glanced back toward the table of books, then at him again."You think she's the wrong person?""I know she is,” he said, without hesitation. “And so do others.”That… made my smile widen. “Others? You mean there are people in this pack who’d rather see me there?”He didn’t answer but his silence said a lot as I smiled.“That’s… good to know,” I muttered. "You know… I was Luna material months before she came into the picture. Before anyone e
Dante’s povHer smirk broke like porcelain paint losing its glue. “Pregnant? That’s all?”“Yes,” I said, meeting her eyes. “And it doesn’t make any difference that she’s human. She’s the future mother of my unborn child. She carries my young.”“I could have your pup, Dante,” she snapped. “With strong genes like mine. The kind of pups this pack needs. The kind that would make the family name survive another several years. Why would she be the reason you tell me to leave?”“That’s not why I told you to leave.” My voice stayed quiet, knowing if I yelled my anger would only grow and so too would hers. “I told you to get out of the pack before. Remember? I told you to never come back here again because of your actions. So why are you breaking that promise now?”Her lips curved up but I wouldn’t call it a smile. “I came back to take what’s mine.”I cocked an eyebrow. “And what would that be?”“YOU,” she barked out a short humorless laugh.“Anna… stop. You’re embarrassing yourself right now.
