Merlin opened her eyes and blinked slowly, trying to adjust to the light streaming through the windows as she looked around and realized that she was lying on the dusty floor. She pushed herself up on her elbows, wincing at the flash of pain in her head and the soreness in her joints. Her mouth was dry and her throat felt like sandpaper as she coughed, a brittle, rasping sound that sounded alien to her. She felt like she had woken up to the worst hangover of her life as she lurched to her feet, the room swaying around her.
Clinging to the table, she glanced around, noticing for the first time that the cabin was in a state of utter decay and disrepair. The floor that she had been sleeping on, was covered in a thick layer of dust and broken in places, through which weeds and bushes grew. The sunlight shone through holes in the roof and windows, illuminating the room with narrow beams of light. In a corner of the room, a dirty, tattered curtain hung tethered to the wall on
Merlin stared out over the water, her eyes hidden behind her sunglasses and her hat pulled low over her face. The sun was merciless, beating down on the boat and leaving a shimmering haze on the horizon. The rain from the night before had flooded the bayou, making it easier to move through the marshes and they were making good time. They were both starving, having eaten all their rations the day before and they couldn't wait to get back home.It was early in the evening when they came within sight of Zeke’s grandfather's cabin, set back from the water and nestled between the trees. Merlin turned to Zeke, a big grin on her face, to see Zeke frowning and his body rigid with tension. Confused, she turned back to see three figures standing on the riverbank adjacent to the small pier. A sudden inexplicable sense of dread gripped her as she stared at them and she got to her feet, standing at the front of the boat, her hands clenching and unclenching, at her sides. Even
A gust of wind rushed through the tent and the scene around her disappeared as she found herself back on the pier, still gazing into the necromancer's eyes. The trance broken, Merlin stepped back, glaring indignantly at him as she stumbled and fell onto something hard and muscular, crouched down low behind her. She heard a familiar growl and instinctively reached out to grab Zeke’s neck as he rose up and leaped forward, charging past the necromancer and his witches.Merlin barely registered the surprise on their faces as they flew past, the wind whipping her face and hair so she had to bury her face in the fur on Zeke’s neck. He'd never run like this before and she could sense his urgency in getting them as far away as possible. It wasn't long before they reached the cabin and swiftly dismounting, she waited for Zeke to shift back. They hurriedly grabbed their stuff from the cabin and were rushing to the car when they heard a crackling sound from the
Merlin fell to her knees and threw up, her body still heaving even after she had expelled everything in her stomach. She felt the tears prick the back of her eyes and before she knew it, they had overflowed and trickled down her face. She tried brushing them away, she didn't even know why she was crying, only that she couldn't stop. Embarrassed, she turned her face away as Zeke approached her and pulled her to her feet, turning her face to him, as he quietly studied her face."Let's go home", he whispered, smoothing back the strands of hair from her face and wiping away her tears with his thumbs. Not trusting herself to speak, she only nodded before Zeke shifted and she climbed on his back. They traveled this way, through the wetlands, Merlin drifting in and out of a restless sleep as she lay on his back, her arms and legs wrapped around him. Her dreams were haunted by soulless eyes that burned with flames and searched relentlessly for her with a searing hu
Merlin openly stared at the Alpha of the Darkmoon Pack, her eyes wide and her mouth open. The man was massive, completely filling the doorway and he was clad only in skin-tight black jeans, his broad, muscular chest exposed. His long, black hair hung down to his waist and around his eyes were mysterious markings that gave him a permanent scowl while enhancing his piercing blue eyes. His chest and arms were covered in more of the strange markings, like symmetrical shapes, that seemed to stretch all the way around his torso to his back."Sébastien", Zeke greeted him with a warm smile as he walked towards him."Zeke, its been too long", Sébastien responded as both men shook hands."So it's true", Sébastien said, nodding at Merlin."This is Merlin, if that's what you mean", Zeke replied, turning to her and gesturing for her to come forward."I've heard much about you", Sébastien's eyes keenly appraise
Merlin returned alone to her room after dinner as Zeke had been taken to Sébastien to discuss the strategy for returning to the Graystorm pack and removing Abel as the Alpha. She had waited anxiously for over an hour for the summons to go to Sébastien but no one had come and eventually she lay down on the bed and fell asleep. She was awoken by the sound of someone knocking softly on the door so she quickly slid off the bed and went to open it. An elderly woman with black hair tinged with gray and twinkling blue eyes, stood outside with her arms full of swathes of fabric."I'm Edith and I've come to prepare you", she said, not waiting for a response as she bustled her way into the room and began spreading the fabric on the bed."What is this?", Merlin questioned, dubiously eyeing the fabric."This is what you will be wearing tonight", the older woman answered while gesturing for Merlin to remove her clothes."What's wr
The initial shock numbed the pain so Merlin didn't realize at first that he had actually cut her until she saw her blood, collecting in the chalice. She winced and recoiled but Sébastien held her still, keeping her wrist over the chalice so not a drop of blood was wasted. He was wholly focused on his task and she studied him close up, her eyes tracing the markings on his face. He had high, almost feminine cheekbones but a strong, angular jaw and chin, his lips were thin and seemed set in a permanent frown. He was shirtless again, his hairless chest almost completely covered in the black markings that glistened in the torchlights, the muscles rippling as he squeezed her wrist. His black pants hung low on his waist, fitting snugly on his hips and thighs and she blushed, realizing that she had been staring at the slight bulge in his trousers. His low chuckle alerted her to the fact that he had seen her looking and her blush deepened as she turned her head away.
The next day Zeke and Sébastien returned to the invisible barrier to search for clues to the identity of their nocturnal visitor. Walking along the perimeter, they found nothing so they ventured out past the barrier until they reached the creek mouth. They split up, moving in opposite directions before doubling back to meet back where they started."Nothing. It's like there was no one here", Zeke complained, as he came within sight of Sébastien."There's always something. Look harder", Sébastien responded, as he continued studying the water.Zeke stood on the riverbank and watched Sébastien as he moved slowly through the water, his eyes intently studying the riverbed. As he watched, the Darkmoon Alpha bent forward, pulling something from the water and holding it up to the light. Zeke leapt from the riverbank into the water, coming to stand beside him as he peered at what Sébastien held between his fingers.&nbs
The shadows beneath the trees seemed to move and breathe like living things and within their darkness moved a shadow of a different kind. The forest had again, fallen oddly silent, as its inhabitants fled the immediate vicinity, to observe from a safe distance. A flurry of clouds, gliding soundlessly overhead, momentarily shrouded the moon, cloaking the ground below the tree canopy in an almost palpable darkness. Somewhere the sound of a twig snapped and Gilbert's head whipped around in the direction of the sound, only to find Sébastien, leaning nonchalantly against a tree, completely naked, his arms folded across his chest."You seem a little skittish Papa Amari", Sébastien smiled, a smile not reflected in his eyes."You look well Sébastien, I like the new artwork, it suits you", Gilbert replied, returning the Alpha's icy smile with one of his own."You look like shit", Sébastien responded, pushing himself away from the t
