When Karen got home at around 7 pm, her dad was waiting for her in the living room – sober for once. His eyes narrowed at Aiden’s figure trailing behind her, hands lazily tucked into his hoodie’s pockets. Indeed, Aiden had insisted on going in with her. And she hadn’t had the courage to argue with him. Even though her dad wouldn’t appreciate his presence, she was much too scared of getting a beating worse than that of the previous night for going home late.
“The school called to tell me you skipped, Karen,” he iced out as soon as she was within sight. She grimaced, remembering school all of a sudden. How could she have forgotten? She truly needed to do her best at school if she wanted to have a shot at leaving this town from hell.Okay, the town hadn’t done much to her in all fairness. It was her dad she was running away from… and admittedly the painful memories as well.“I wasn’t feeling well,&rdKaren was quiet – too quiet – during the car ride. And Aiden didn’t like that. But no matter how much he tried to get her to talk to him, she didn’t open up. He could almost sense her sorrow and confusion. And he could damn well understand where her feelings came from. Thus, after a while, he stopped all attempts to lighten up the atmosphere, and opted for silence instead. He hurt for her.His heart ached for her.“You should just take me to Mason’s,” were the first words she uttered as she straightened up in her seat.Aiden hit the brakes so hard, she was propelled forward. His hand shot out to steady her, and he could thank both his werewolf reflexes and the seatbelt for his mate’s safety.“Mason’s?” He all but growled out the name.Should have ripped the boy to shreds the moment I saw him, his wolf said angrily.“Yeah, I’ll give you the directions,” she said off-
Aiden realized how hasty he had been when he called his mom in the evening. She told him she wished he would have called her before making such a decision – erasing his mate’s memories, that was.He knew he had acted rashly, but he had thought that his parents out of everyone would understand. After all, they knew how it went the last time he had shared his secret with a human friend – his only human friend back when he had been ten years old.The dumbfounded Tom had acted politely but his voice had held this hint of wariness that Aiden had just chosen to ignore. He shouldn’t have. And boy did the ten year old babble afterwards!Tom’s parents had come to tell Aiden’s parents that their child needed help if he believed so strongly in the existence of werewolves, and even worse viewed himself as one.His parents had berated him so much on his recklessness, and had had to use the service of an eraser to deal with th
Aiden had expected some kind of rejection from Karen. She was after all a strong-headed girl who didn't like relying on others. But he hadn't expected her to act as if he didn't exist altogether. Had she kept her memories of what had transpired, he would have understood. But she had no clue. She didn't know that he was a werewolf and she was his fated mate. Therefore, her behavior came as an unwelcomed surprise. His mom had told him she wished his mate would make him sweat and cry. Well, both options didn't seem that far away right at the moment. Karen was hell bent on ignoring him, and he was so confused, he no longer knew what was right and what was left.He didn't even know what he had done to warrant such a strong reaction. Or was it something her best friend, Mason, had told her when she had stayed at his place that day?He decided to confront the guy. It was the end of the school day, and Mason was heading out when Aiden came to stand before him."Hello," he gree
There was a sense of unease and excitement in the classroom that day. Karen’s classmates were whispering about the videos she would not have seen had it not been for Mason. Some were concerned, and others excited. They should be scared, she thought absentmindedly. This is no laughing matter.Indeed, weren’t vampires supposed to feed on blood – human blood? And what about werewolves, didn’t they turn into beasts each full moon? And don’t get her started on witches. Weren’t they wicked as they came?Okay, she didn’t think too highly of all three species. One ought to blame the tales for that. She had never met one of them after all.The teacher called for silence for the third time that period, and she snapped out of her thoughts. She looked ahead of her, and only just realized Aiden had skipped school.A part of her was relieved. She wouldn’t have to ignore him, and act as if every fiber of her being w
Contrarily to most kidnapped people – for despite what it might have looked like, this could only be an abduction – Karen didn’t feel as agitated as she should have. She was scared, sure, but she was also curious. She was absurdly curious as to why this stranger had taken a fancy to her, stalked her for weeks, before finally kidnapping her by casting some spell on her that rendered her mute and obedient. He only had to say some words in some foreign language to have her come sub-willingly with him. He could only be a warlock, or at least that was what she reasoned. But what did a warlock have to do with a human such as herself?Even if he called her Luna and pretended to know her, that didn’t explain much of anything. So, yes, she was scared of what might happen, of what the near future held for her. But she was also eager for some light, some explanation regarding the situation she was in. She stared at him, trying to etch his featur
Aiden wasn’t surprised to see that the daring abductor was confident enough to come alone. The guy looked vaguely familiar to him. And he soon enough recognized him as the eraser.Good god, what a fool he had been to bring an outsider into his business! Look where that got him.“Why, hello there,” the warlock had the nerve to smirk at him.Kill him. And find mate.We are getting there, Aiden sighed as he tried to clear his mind of his inner beast’s killer intent.“What do you want from me, warlock?” He asked, uncaring to know his opponent’s motives. All he wanted to know was what he would have to do in exchange for his mate’s safe return to his side.Would he have to kill him and then find her as his wolf suggested? That could very well mean war between the witches and the werewolves. And seeing as Blake was adamant about killing every breathing living witch, if his mate were to pass, that would only mean
Aiden’s reunion with Karen was the furthest it could have been from his imagination. To say it didn’t play out the way he had expected would be the understatement of the year.He hadn’t expected her to welcome him with open arms, admittedly, but he had thought he’d find her scared and confused, not angry beyond comprehension.Indeed the moment he stepped into the desolate cabin in which she had been kept captive, his beautiful blonde mate looked at him, with murder in her eyes. That was not a what-kind-of-mess-did-you-get-me-into kind of glare… it was much more intense, and held so much more heat to it.He would have startled back from it had he been any lesser wolf, but he wasn’t, and thus he didn’t.He tried to shrug it off as he breathed out a few relieved words, “You’re okay. Oh god, I’m so glad you’re okay.”She didn’t utter a word in response, even as he went to free he
“Who are you?” Aiden demanded to know, while mentally preparing himself for the fight that was sure to follow.“I was just wandering the woods – my woods – when I sensed your presence…” the man announced before seemingly zoning out.Aiden raised an eyebrow at that, mildly unnerved by Karen who hadn’t gotten in the car, and who was no doubt intrigued by the stranger, but also wildly unnerved by the man’s response which, in fact, didn’t answer his question at all.“What about my presence?” Aiden decided to play by the man’s rules for the time being while shielding his absurdly and endearingly curious mate.“Well, you do ooze off a certain amount of power. I have always been drawn to power,” the man went on, almost in a daze, “And let’s just say that I want that power as my own.”That sentence was the breaking point of the discussion, for the man, who ha
