Corin wouldn't talk. Not at first, not even after an hour of Odalys speaking to him low and fast in a language Ivy didn't understand a word of, her voice shifting between pleading and furious and back again.

"He answers to someone named Thorne," Odalys said finally, straightening, exhaustion carved deep into her face. "A faction within what's left of our people. Younger, angrier, tired of waiting for diplomacy to hand back what was taken by force."

"Taken back how?" Kade asked.

"Thorne doesn't believe Ashgrove needs Voss permission to exist again. He believes it needs Voss territory. All of it, eventually, starting with whatever leverage this child represents." Odalys's jaw tightened. "I thought I'd convinced the faction to wait. I was wrong. Corin here was sent to make sure the challenge fight ends in enough chaos that Thorne's people can move while everyone's distracted watching Damon and Kade try to kill each other."

Ivy's stomach turned to ice. "Move how? Move where?"

"Toward you," Odalys said quietly. "And the child. Thorne doesn't see you as someone to protect, Ivy. He sees you as a claim to be secured. A symbol he can use to rally the rest of Ashgrove around him, whether you consent to it or not."

The room went very quiet.

"So during the fight," Kade said slowly, "while I'm trying to keep this pack from falling to Damon, someone's going to try to take Ivy."

"That's my fear, yes."

"Then we change the plan." Kade turned to Rhys, voice hard and fast now, already three steps ahead. "Double security around Ivy, starting tonight, not just during the fight. Nobody gets near her I haven't personally cleared."

"That's not enough," Odalys said. "Thorne's people will expect security. They'll plan around it. What you need is someone who can feel them coming before they're close enough to matter."

Every eye in the room turned toward Ivy.

"Me," she said slowly. "You want me to use whatever this is. During the actual fight."

"I want you safe," Kade said immediately. "That's not the same thing as putting you in the middle of—"

"I'm already in the middle of it, Kade. I have been since the day I signed that contract." Ivy stood, feeling steadier than she probably had any right to feel. "If Thorne's people are going to come for me regardless of what precautions you take, I'd rather be able to feel them coming than sit somewhere safe and helpless, waiting to find out if the precautions worked."

"It's dangerous."

"Everything about this month has been dangerous." She met his eyes, steady. "I'd rather be dangerous back."

They found her an hour before moonrise, alone in the garden where she'd first met Damon, trying to settle the buzzing static that had been building under her skin all evening.

A woman waited by the roses. Not Odalys. Someone younger, hard-eyed, a symbol tattooed along her collarbone that matched the crescent-and-tree from the pendant exactly.

"You're not supposed to be here," Ivy said, that new awareness already screaming a warning she hadn't needed it to give her.

"I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be." The woman's voice was calm, almost gentle, which made it worse. "Thorne sent me ahead. Not to hurt you. To offer you a choice before things get complicated tonight."

"I'm not interested."

"You will be, once you hear it." The woman stepped closer, unhurried. "Come with me now, quietly, before the fighting starts. Thorne will protect you and the child properly — not as some bargaining chip in Voss politics, but as what you actually are. Ashgrove blood, finally coming home."

"This is my home. Right here."

"Is it?" The woman tilted her head, something almost pitying in her expression. "A week ago you didn't know any of this existed. A week from now, if Damon wins that fight, you'll be a widow's problem in someone else's pack, carrying a child nobody there will want alive. Thorne is offering you certainty. Voss is offering you a coin flip."

Ivy felt the pull of her own new instincts sharpen, that low hum turning into something closer to alarm, and somewhere behind the woman, in the shadows past the garden wall, she felt more of them. Not one. Several.

"You're not here to ask," Ivy said slowly, understanding landing cold and clear all at once. "You're here to take me either way. The choice was never real."

The woman's calm expression didn't change, which was its own kind of answer.

"I was hoping you'd make this easy," she said, and reached for something at her belt. "It's a shame you didn't."

The pack's legal counsel confirmed it within an hour — a junior associate, new to the firm handling the Ashgrove land transfers, had needed a placeholder name for the shell company and pulled it straight from a briefing document without understanding what the word actually meant to anyone involved."An honest mistake," Kade said, pacing the length of his study while Ivy sat curled in the armchair by the window, Rowan asleep against her shoulder. "That's almost worse than sabotage. At least sabotage would mean someone was paying close enough attention to be dangerous on purpose.""Careless mistakes are dangerous too," Odalys said from the doorway, where she'd arrived within the hour of getting Kade's call, expression grim. "Perhaps more dangerous. Sabotage can be traced to a motive. This was simply bad luck wearing the shape of a bureaucratic form.""Can we fix it? Rename the company, bury the old filing?""We can try," Rhys said, laptop open on the desk, already three tabs deep into c

Sarah Chen didn't look like Ivy expected. Younger, for one thing, maybe thirty, with a canvas bag over one shoulder and the kind of patient, watchful calm that seemed more dangerous than any aggression could have been."Mr. Voss." She offered a hand at the gate, and Kade shook it, easy and controlled, nothing in his face betraying the tension Ivy could feel radiating off him even from ten feet back. "Thank you for seeing me. I know it's unusual, showing up like this.""You said land use. My assistant mentioned county permits." Kade's voice was smooth, unbothered, a tone Ivy hadn't heard from him since the council hearing. "I'm happy to answer questions, though I confess I'm curious why a reporter drove two hours out for what sounds like a fairly dry municipal story.""Dry stories sometimes turn into interesting ones." Sarah's eyes moved past him, briefly, taking in the house, the grounds, cataloging something Ivy couldn't guess at. "I've been tracking a pattern of land acquisitions in

Dani arrived Saturday morning, overnight bag in one hand, deep suspicion written all over her face the second she stepped out of her car and got a good look at the compound's gate."Okay," she said, staring up at twelve feet of iron like it might start talking to her. "This is either a cult or a cartel, and I need you to tell me which one before I walk through that gate.""Neither," Ivy said, hugging her tight. "It's actually so much stranger than either of those."She told her everything on the back porch that afternoon, Rowan napping upstairs, Kade sitting close but letting Ivy carry the story herself. The clinic. The change. The full moon and the bond and the succession fight and the Ashgrove reveal, all of it, laid out plain the way she wished someone had laid it out for her, three weeks before her whole life turned into something out of a folktale.Dani didn't say anything for a long time after Ivy finished. She just stared at the roses, jaw working, processing in the particular

Dani called on a Tuesday afternoon, voice tight in a way Ivy hadn't heard from her since before any of this started."I need to ask you something," Dani said, "and I need you to actually answer me this time instead of giving me the vague version."Ivy shifted Rowan onto her hip, heart already sinking. "Okay.""A reporter came by my work today. Asking questions about you. About some kind of 'incident' out near where you moved. Animal attacks, unexplained hospital transfers, a security firm buying up land permits under three different shell names." Dani's voice dropped lower. "Ivy, she had photos. Blurry ones, night-vision, something big in the trees near a stone wall. She asked if I knew anything about the Voss family. I said no. I don't know if she believed me."Ivy's stomach dropped straight through the floor."Did she leave a card? A name?""Sarah Chen. Independent journalist, apparently working on something bigger than one weird sighting. She said she's been pulling records for alm

The baby came three weeks early, on a night without a full moon at all, which Ivy would later decide felt exactly right — proof that some things in her life could finally happen on nobody's schedule but her own.She labored for eleven hours in the private wing Kade had built for her that very first week, back when she'd thought this whole arrangement was just a business deal with strange terms attached. Margaret sat on one side of the bed, gripping her hand tight enough to bruise. Kade stayed on the other, steady through every hour of it, murmuring something low and constant that Ivy only half understood but held onto anyway."You're doing so well," Margaret kept saying, tears streaking a face that had gotten stronger every week since the truth came out, since the medicine started working better, since she'd stopped having to pretend she didn't know what her daughter had married into. "Almost there, sweetheart. Almost there."When the baby finally came, the whole room went quiet for o

Thorne agreed to meet two days later, on neutral ground at the edge of Voss territory, a clearing chosen because it belonged to neither pack and both at once.Ivy stood beside Kade and Odalys, security spread wide but not crowding close, and watched Thorne walk into the clearing flanked by four of his own people. He was younger than Ivy expected, sharp-eyed, carrying himself with the same restless energy she'd felt in Corin the night he'd broken into her mother's house."You came," Thorne said, eyes moving over the three of them, lingering longest on Ivy. "Braver than I expected, coming to me instead of hiding behind Voss walls.""I'm not hiding from anything," Ivy said. "I came because this is my choice to make, not something to be decided around me by people who've never actually asked what I want.""And what do you want?""Peace," Ivy said simply. "Between my bloodlines, both of them. Not a war fought over me like I'm territory to be claimed."Thorne's jaw tightened. "Ashgrove was
