The Loan

The morning after the gala, all of New York woke up screaming my name.

I woke up at six AM in my fifty-eighth floor penthouse to my phone buzzing non-stop. Three phones. My personal, my new CEO phone, and Maya's spare she threw at me.

Maya Jones was already in my kitchen, barefoot, in a silk robe, holding two coffees and scrolling through five tablets at once, grinning like she had won the lottery.

"Good morning, Chairwoman Sinclair! You broke the internet! You broke Chloe Hart! You broke your ex-husband's cold heart! Pick your favorite!"

She shoved a tablet in my face.

Headline one: SECRET HEIRESS RETURNS — THE LOST SINCLAIR PRINCESS WAS THE BILLIONAIRE'S MOCKED WIFE FOR THREE YEARS.

Headline two: PLAZA HOTEL GALA TURNS INTO CORONATION OF REAL QUEEN — CHLOE HART REMOVED FOR FRAUD.

Headline three: BLACKWOOD ENTERPRISES STOCK DROPS 18% AFTER SINCLAIR REVEAL — BANK TO REVIEW $200M LOAN TODAY AT 9 AM.

I sipped my coffee. Black, no sugar. Like my dress last night.

"Stock dropped eighteen percent?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Eighteen point four at open," Maya said. "Because everyone just found out Sinclair Global owns thirty percent of Blackwood and you are now CEO. And Sinclair Bank holds his two hundred million dollar loan. Investors hate uncertainty. They love you."

Elias walked in from the terrace, already in a perfect suit at six AM, holding financial papers, looking twenty years younger.

"My princess is awake. Good. Because at nine AM sharp, our bank will call in the loan for review, as promised. And at nine AM sharp, our property manager will evict Miss Hart from her fake gallery in SoHo for non-payment. Two events. Same time. Poetic."

I looked out at the city. From fifty-eight floors up, Manhattan looked small. Like a chessboard.

For three years I had looked up at this tower from the subway, pretending I didn't know who owned it. Now I owned it.

"Is that too cruel?" I asked quietly. "The eviction?"

"No," Elias said, firm. "Kindness without power is an invitation to be stepped on. You were kind for three years. They stepped on you. Now you have power. Now you decide who gets kindness. That is the burden of being a Sinclair."

Maya put a hand on my shoulder. "Chloe's family owes three million to lenders. Her gallery never made profit. She used Damian's money for rent for two years. She used your bracelet to impress clients. You are not evicting an artist. You are evicting a fraud."

I nodded. My jaw set.

"Call the bank at nine exactly. And the property manager at nine exactly."

At seven-thirty AM, across town, in the Blackwood Enterprises glass tower, Damian Blackwood had not slept.

His boardroom was full. Twelve board members, all old men in dark suits, shouting at once, looking at the giant screen where Blackwood stock was bleeding red.

"Eighteen percent down in pre-market!"

"Damian, is it true Sinclair owns thirty percent? Is it true your ex-wife is Elias Sinclair's granddaughter?"

"Is it true Sinclair Bank will call our tech park loan at nine? Without it, the tech park is dead!"

Damian stood at the head of the table, in the same tuxedo from last night, tie undone, eyes red, hair messy for the first time.

He had spent the whole night calling Ava. Blocked. Calling Maya. Blocked. Calling the Sinclair Tower front desk. Put on hold forty minutes, then told Miss Sinclair is unavailable.

He had watched the videos from last night on repeat. Ava in black satin catching Chloe's wrist. Ava dropping the microphone. The standing ovation. Chloe falling.

He had married Ava because his dying grandfather forced him to. Marry a simple, kind, humble girl with no money, his grandfather had begged. A girl who will love you for you.

He had thought his grandfather was sentimental. He had thought Ava was boring. Quiet. Poor.

Now he understood. His grandfather had known who Ava really was. He had tried to save Damian from himself.

At eight-fifty AM, his phone rang. Private number. Sinclair Bank logo.

"Mr. Blackwood, this is risk department at Sinclair Bank. Regarding your two hundred million dollar loan facility for Blackwood Tech Park. Due to material change in shareholder structure and market volatility, we are calling the loan for immediate review. You have forty-eight hours to provide additional collateral of fifty million dollars or we will freeze the facility and demand full repayment."

Forty-eight hours. Fifty million.

Damian's hand shook.

At eight-fifty-one AM, Chloe Hart was woken by banging on her gallery door in SoHo.

Two men in black suits with a legal notice.

"Miss Hart? This building is owned by Sinclair Property Group. Your lease expired last month. You are three months behind on rent. You have twenty-four hours to vacate all property and artwork. After that, locks will be changed. Here is formal eviction notice, signed by Chairwoman Ava Sinclair."

Chloe screamed. She threw a vase. She called Damian. Voicemail. She opened social media. Last night she had two million followers. This morning she had one-point-four million and every comment was laughing. Videos of her falling had ten million views.

At nine-thirty AM, I walked into the Sinclair Global boardroom for the first time as Chairwoman.

Twelve board members stood up when I entered.

Maya whispered, "Breathe. You own them. Literally."

Elias sat at my right. He squeezed my hand.

"Good morning," I said, calm and clear. "I am Ava Sinclair. Some of you knew my parents. Some of you knew me when I was twelve and hid under this table. For three years I lived as Mrs. Blackwood. I learned how to cook, how to wait, how to be humiliated, how to be invisible."

"I am done being invisible. Sinclair Global owns thirty percent of Blackwood Enterprises. Sinclair Bank holds their two hundred million dollar loan. Sinclair Property owns their tech park land. We are their biggest creditor and biggest shareholder. From today, Blackwood will not make a major decision without Sinclair approval. Is that clear?"

Old Mr. Chen who knew my father smiled and clapped once. Then all twelve stood and clapped.

"Welcome home, Chairwoman," Mr. Chen said, tears in eyes. "Your father would be so proud."

For the first time that morning, my eyes stung.

At ten AM, security called my private line.

"Miss Sinclair, there is a Mr. Damian Blackwood in the lobby. He does not have an appointment. He says it is urgent. He looks like he has not slept. He has a small box with him. Should we send him up?"

Maya raised an eyebrow. "The box is probably your bracelet."

I looked out at the city.

Three days ago I would have run downstairs.

Now my heart was calm. Cold. Powerful.

"No," I said. "Tell him Miss Sinclair is in a board meeting all day. If he wants to discuss his loan, he can come back tomorrow at nine AM sharp with his board and his lawyer and fifty million collateral. And tell him to bring the bracelet. I want it back."

At ten-oh-five AM, security called again.

"Miss Sinclair, Mr. Blackwood refuses to leave the lobby. He says he will wait all day if he has to. He says he made a huge mistake."

This was my core struggle again, but different now.

For three years my struggle was: If I tell him I am a Sinclair, will he love me for money? If I hide it, will he love me for me?

Now my struggle was: If he begs me now that I am a billionaire, is he begging for me or for his loan? If I save his company, am I saving him because I love him or because I still need his love?

Kindness without power is an invitation to be stepped on. But power without kindness is just cruelty. My mother always said that too.

What kind of billionaire would I be?

I stood, walked to the window, looked down fifty-eight floors. Somewhere down there, Damian was waiting.

"Let him wait," I whispered. "Let him wait like I waited for three years."

At eleven AM, my assistant brought in a letter. Old paper, yellowed, sealed with wax. Sinclair family seal.

"Mr. Elias said this was in your father's safe deposit box. It is from Damian's grandfather, Henry Blackwood. Written three years ago, before he died. Addressed to you. It was supposed to be given to you on your third wedding anniversary."

My hands shook as I opened it.

My dearest Ava,

If you are reading this on your third anniversary, it means my grandson Damian has not yet learned to love you properly. I am sorry. I tried to teach him. I made him marry you because I knew you were Elias's granddaughter. I knew you were kind. I knew you were the only girl who could save him from becoming his father — cold, empty, alone.

I left you a gift in my will. Not money. Something more valuable. The original deed to Blackwood Manor. The house Damian lives in. It was my house before it was his. I put it in your name three years ago. It has always been yours. If he ever hurts you, you can evict him like he evicted your heart.

Forgive an old man for meddling. I only wanted my grandson to know true love before I die.

Love,

Henry Blackwood

The deed to Blackwood Manor. The mansion where Damian threw divorce papers at me on my anniversary steak. Where I cooked for three years alone.

It was mine. It had always been mine.

I laughed. Then I cried. Tears streaming, mascara running, in front of my entire board.

Maya hugged me. Elias held me.

"Grandpa Henry knew," I whispered. "He tried to save me."

At noon, I made a decision.

"Maya, call the property lawyers. I want to serve an eviction notice to Damian Blackwood and Chloe Hart at Blackwood Manor. Effective in seven days. The house is mine. I want them out."

Maya screamed with joy. "YES! EVICT THE EX! THAT IS THE MOST SAVAGE REVENGE IN BILLIONAIRE ROMANCE HISTORY!"

At two PM, Damian was still in the lobby. Security said he was sitting on the floor now, tie off, looking at the small velvet box with my bracelet inside.

At three PM, Chloe tried to storm into the Sinclair Tower, screaming my name, in the same white dress from last night, now dirty, hair messy.

Security escorted her out in thirty seconds while tourists filmed.

At five PM, my phone buzzed. Unknown number, but I knew who it was.

"Ava? Please. It's me. I know you blocked me. I am still in your lobby. Seven hours. I brought your bracelet. Chloe... she lied. She is not pregnant. She showed me a fake test. I was a fool. I was blind. I threw away three years of your love for a lie. Please. Can I just come up for five minutes? Just five minutes?"

It was Damian. His voice broken. Raw. Not cold anymore. Just a man who lost everything.

For three years I waited for him to say I am sorry. Now he was saying it. And I had fifty billion dollars and his house deed and his loan in my hands.

The question was... would I save him or destroy him?
