“Stay away from my son.”
Elena Bennett stopped walking.
The words were quiet, but they felt more threatening than a scream.
Victoria Blackwood sat behind a marble table in the Blackwood mansion, perfectly composed.
“I’m sorry?”
“You heard me.”
Victoria pushed a thick brown envelope toward her.
“Open it.”
Elena hesitated before taking it. The photographs inside made her stomach twist.
Her father.
Her mother.
Her younger brother.
Their house.
Pictures of Elena herself with Adrian.
She looked up sharply.
“Why do you have these?”
“Because I wanted you to understand that this isn't simply about whether I approve of you.”
“What is it about?”
“Consequences.”
Elena placed the photographs on the table.
“My family has done nothing to you.”
“Your family is not the problem. Your relationship with my son is.”
“I love Adrian.”
“And he loves you.”
The answer surprised Elena.
Victoria leaned back.
“That is precisely why this needs to end.”
“You can't decide who he loves.”
“No. But I can decide what happens when he refuses to listen.”
Victoria opened a folder and slid several documents across the table.
Elena recognized her father's company name.
Her heart sank.
“What are those?”
“Information about your father's business.”
“You investigated my family?”
“I investigated the people standing between my son and his future.”
Elena's hands curled into fists.
“You're threatening my father.”
“I am warning you.”
“What happens if I don't listen?”
Victoria glanced at the photographs.
“Your father loses his company. Your family loses its home. Your brother's future becomes uncertain.”
Elena stared at her in disbelief.
“You would destroy innocent people because your son loves me?”
“I would protect my son from a decision he is too emotional to make.”
“You don't know him better than I do.”
“I am his mother.”
“And I'm the woman he chose.”
Victoria's expression hardened.
“Then prove that you love him.”
“How?”
“Leave him.”
Silence filled the room.
Victoria continued, “If you truly love Adrian, you will understand that sometimes love requires sacrifice.”
Elena's eyes burned.
“And if I refuse?”
Victoria's gaze moved to the photographs.
“Then your family pays the price.”
Elena wanted to fight back. She wanted to call Adrian and tell him everything.
But she imagined her father's face if his business collapsed. Her mother's fear. Her brother losing everything.
“How long do I have?” she asked.
“Forty-eight hours.”
“To do what?”
“Disappear from Adrian's life.”
Victoria stood.
“Don't leave him a reason to look for you.”
Elena picked up the photographs.
“You may be able to control his family, but you can't control his heart.”
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
“Perhaps not. But I can make sure he never gets the chance to choose you.”
Elena turned toward the door.
“Once you leave,” Victoria said, “don't come back.”
Elena walked out.
The moment she reached the gate, she pulled out her phone.
Twenty-three missed calls.
All from Adrian.
The phone rang again.
She stared at his name before answering.
“Where are you?”
His voice immediately made her chest ache.
“Adrian…”
“I've been calling you for hours. What happened?”
“I can't see you anymore.”
Silence.
“What?”
“I said I can't see you.”
“Why?”
“I just can't.”
“That isn't an answer.”
She closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don't apologize. Tell me what happened.”
She couldn't.
If she told him about Victoria, he would confront his mother. And then her family's situation could become even worse.
“You need to forget me,” Elena whispered.
The line went silent.
Then Adrian said, “Look across the street.”
Elena's eyes widened.
She turned.
Adrian stood outside the gate.
He crossed the street quickly and stopped in front of her.
“What did my mother do?”
“Nothing.”
“Don't lie to me.”
“She didn't do anything.”
“Then why are you crying?”
Elena looked away.
He stepped closer.
“Tell me what happened.”
“I can't.”
“Whatever it is, we'll deal with it together.”
“You can't fix this.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Do you love me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Then why are you leaving?”
Elena's heart broke.
Because she couldn't tell him the truth.
Because she couldn't risk her family.
Because she had just learned that love could become a weapon.
“I have to go.”
“Elena—”
“Goodbye.”
She turned before he could stop her.
Every step away from him hurt.
She wanted him to follow.
She wanted him to stop her.
But she didn't look back.
If she did, she knew she would run straight into his arms.
Three weeks later, Elena stood in her bedroom staring at a pregnancy test.
Positive.
Her hand trembled.
A baby.
Adrian's baby.
She slowly sat on the edge of the bed, one hand moving to her stomach.
Tears filled her eyes.
She had left Adrian to protect her family.
Now she was carrying a secret that could bring him back into her life.
Her phone lit up.
Please. Just tell me why you disappeared.
Elena stared at the message.
Her fingers hovered over Adrian's name.
She could call him.
She could tell him about the baby.
She could tell him about Victoria.
But then she remembered the photographs.
Her family.
The threat.
She deleted Adrian's number.
A knock sounded downstairs.
“Elena!”
Her father's voice was urgent.
“Pack your things!”
She stood quickly.
“What happened?”
“We're leaving tonight.”
“Tonight?”
Her father appeared at the doorway, his face pale.
“The Blackwoods came.”
Elena's hand moved protectively to her stomach.
“What did they say?”
“They gave us forty-eight hours.”
Her breath caught.
“Forty-eight hours to do what?”
“To leave the city.”
Elena looked toward the window.
Somewhere out there, Adrian was still waiting for an explanation she could never give him.
She looked down at her stomach.
The secret inside her had already changed everything.
Forty-eight hours.
That was all the time she had to disappear from Adrian Blackwood's life.
And this time, she wouldn't be leaving alone.
Adrian drove through the city without knowing where he was going. The message from the unknown number remained on his screen.THE SECOND FILE IS ALREADY IN YOUR FATHER'S HANDS.He read it again. Then again. His father.Richard Blackwood had always been the calm one. The reasonable one. The person Adrian trusted whenever his grandfather's decisions became too harsh. But now every memory felt different.Adrian turned the car toward Blackwood Corporation. He needed answers. When he arrived, his security chief was waiting in the lobby.“Sir.”“Where is my father?”“He left about twenty minutes ago.”“Where did he go?”The man hesitated.“I don't know.”“Check his car.”“We already did.”“And?”“It wasn't in the parking garage.”Adrian pulled out his phone.“Track his phone.”“We tried.”“What do you mean you tried?”“His phone has been switched off.”Adrian's jaw tightened.“Since when?”“About thirty minutes ago.”Thirty minutes.Exactly when the message had arrived.“Find out where he w
Victoria Blackwood was having breakfast when Adrian walked into the mansion. She looked up calmly.“You came back.”Adrian didn't sit.“Where were you last night?”Victoria placed her cup down.“That's an interesting question.”“I found a message in Grandfather's private archive.”Her expression changed for less than a second. But Adrian noticed.“What message?”He placed the paper on the table.Victoria picked it up and read it.Her face slowly lost its color.“Where did you get this?”“That's not important.”“It is to me.”“Then tell me what happened.”Victoria looked toward the doorway.“Send the staff away.”Adrian turned toward the servants.“Leave us.”One by one, they disappeared. When the room was finally empty, Victoria stood.“You shouldn't be investigating this.”“Why?”“Because there are things you don't understand.”“I understand that you destroyed Elena's life.”Victoria flinched.“I was trying to protect you.”“You threatened her family.”“Yes.”“You forced her to disap
Adrian opened the door.Nobody was there.Only an envelope lay on the floor. He picked it up.“Don't touch that,” Charles warned.Adrian ignored him.He opened the envelope.Inside was a single photograph.A photograph of the Blackwood Corporation building. On the back was a handwritten message.THE FILE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR WAS NEVER DESTROYED.Adrian's eyes narrowed.“What file?”Charles stared at the photograph.“The missing agreement.”Daniel suddenly sat down.Elena noticed.“You know something.”Daniel rubbed his forehead.“I've known about that file for years.”Adrian turned toward him.“Where is it?”“I don't know.”“You're lying again.”“I don't know where it is now.”“But you know what it contains.”Daniel hesitated.“Yes.”Elena stepped forward.“What does it contain?”Daniel looked at her.“The truth about the agreement between our families.”Charles crossed his arms.“And the reason Alexander Blackwood wanted everyone to forget it existed.”Adrian stared at Charles.“What
The lights came back on.For several seconds, nobody moved.Elena was still holding the letter.Adrian stood beside her, his eyes fixed on the windows.“Did you hear that?” he asked.Daniel nodded.“The car.”Adrian immediately moved toward the door.“Stay here.”Elena grabbed his arm.“No.”He turned.“I’m not letting you walk into whatever is outside alone.”Adrian looked at her hand around his arm. Then at her face.Something softened in his expression.“You're still stubborn.”“I'm still scared.”The honesty caught him off guard.Elena released him.Charles walked toward the window and pulled the curtain aside. The road was empty. The car was gone.“Who was that?” Adrian asked.Charles didn't answer.“Charles.”“I don't know.”Adrian gave him a cold look.“You expect me to believe that?”“No.”Charles turned toward Elena.“But whoever was outside knows you're here.”Elena's stomach tightened.Daniel suddenly stepped forward.“We need to leave.”Charles looked at him.“Not yet.”“Y
“Finally.”Charles Vale's voice was calm, almost polite. That frightened Elena more than if he had shouted. She stood frozen in the middle of the room, one hand instinctively resting against her stomach.Adrian moved immediately, placing himself between Elena and the stranger.“Who are you?”Charles smiled faintly.“You already know my name.”“I asked who you are.”Charles looked past Adrian and fixed his eyes on Elena.“I’m the man your family should have told you about years ago.”Elena's heart tightened. She turned toward her father.“Dad?”Daniel didn't answer. That silence was enough.Elena stared at him in disbelief.“You know him?”Daniel finally looked at Charles.“I know exactly who he is.”Charles gave a humorless laugh.“And yet you never told your daughter.”Adrian's expression hardened.“What does my family have to do with you?”Charles slowly walked toward the table and placed a thick brown folder on it.“Your family has everything to do with me.”Adrian didn't move.“Th
The black car disappeared around the corner.Adrian remained by the window, watching the empty road.“They're still watching us,” he said.Elena wrapped her arms around herself.“Who?”“I don't know yet.”Her father walked toward the window and pulled the curtains shut.“We shouldn't stay here.”Adrian turned.“Where can we go?”Daniel hesitated. That hesitation told Adrian everything.“You already have somewhere in mind.”Daniel sighed.“There is a property my father left me years ago. It's outside the city.”“Is it safe?”“I've never told anyone about it.”“Then we'll go there.”Elena looked at Adrian.“You're coming with us?”Adrian stared at her.“You thought I'd find out I have a child and then leave?”“That isn't what I meant.”“I know.”His voice softened.“But I'm not leaving you alone again.”Elena's heart tightened. She had spent weeks convincing herself that Adrian was better off without her.Now that he was standing in front of her, she wasn't sure she could keep pretendin
