LOGINElena packed in silence.
Two dresses.
A pair of jeans.
Her mother's old necklace.
Nothing else.
Every time she looked around her bedroom, she felt as if she were saying goodbye to a life she had never been ready to leave.
Her hand rested briefly against her stomach.
No one knew.
Not her parents.
Not Adrian.
No one.
“Elena!”
Her father's voice came from downstairs.
“We have to go.”
She grabbed her bag and hurried down.
Her mother was already waiting beside the front door, holding a small suitcase. Her younger brother stood beside her, confused and frightened.
“Why are we leaving?” he asked.
Daniel Bennett looked at his son.
“Because we have to.”
“But where are we going?”
“Somewhere safe.”
Elena looked at her father.
“Did they give you a choice?”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“No.”
That single word told her everything.
They stepped outside.
Their house looked strangely peaceful.
The same flowers stood beside the walkway. The same curtains hung behind the windows.
But Elena knew they would never see it the same way again.
Her mother locked the door.
Then the family got into the car.
As they drove away, Elena looked through the rear window.
The house became smaller.
Then smaller still.
Until it disappeared.
She swallowed the lump in her throat.
She had expected leaving Adrian to hurt.
She hadn't expected leaving her entire life behind to hurt even more.
Across the city, Adrian Blackwood stood outside his mother's office.
His jaw was tight.
“Where is she?”
Victoria didn't look up from the document in front of her.
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
She finally raised her eyes.
“Watch your tone.”
“You threatened her.”
“I warned her.”
“And now she's disappeared.”
Victoria closed the folder.
“She made her decision.”
Adrian stared at her.
“What did you do?”
“I protected you.”
“I didn't ask you to.”
“You will thank me eventually.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You don't know me at all.”
He turned toward the door.
“Where are you going?”
“To find Elena.”
Victoria's expression changed.
“Adrian.”
He stopped.
“If you go after that girl, don't expect me to protect you from the consequences.”
He looked back at her.
“I'm not asking you to protect me.”
Then he walked out.
Victoria watched him leave.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.
She had expected Elena to disappear.
She had not expected Adrian to follow.
---
Adrian called Elena again.
The number was unavailable.
He tried once more.
Nothing.
He opened their old messages.
The last one from him remained unanswered.
Please. Just tell me why you disappeared.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
Elena wouldn't simply leave.
Not without a reason.
He remembered her eyes that afternoon.
She had been terrified.
And she had looked at him as if saying goodbye was breaking her heart.
Someone had forced her to leave.
He was certain of it.
Adrian walked into his office and called his assistant.
“Find out everything that happened at Elena Bennett's house today.”
His assistant hesitated.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And don't let my mother know.”
Adrian ended the call.
He walked to the window.
The city stretched beneath him, bright and restless.
Somewhere in that city, Elena had vanished.
And he intended to find her.
Hours later, the Bennett family stopped at a small roadside restaurant.
Elena barely touched her food.
Her father noticed.
“You need to eat.”
“I'm not hungry.”
“You've barely eaten all day.”
Elena forced a small smile.
“I'll be fine.”
Her mother reached across the table and touched her hand.
“Are you sure?”
Elena looked at her.
For a second, she almost told her everything.
Then her eyes dropped to her stomach.
“I’m just tired.”
Her mother squeezed her fingers.
“We'll get through this together.”
Elena nodded.
She hoped that was true.
Outside, a black car passed slowly along the road.
Elena watched it disappear.
Her heart began beating faster.
“Dad…”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
But something felt wrong.
She looked toward the road again.
The car was gone.
That night, the family arrived in a small town several hours away from their old home.
It wasn't beautiful.
It wasn't luxurious.
But it was far from the Blackwoods.
That was all that mattered.
Daniel opened the door to their temporary house.
“We'll stay here until I figure things out.”
Elena stepped inside.
Her mother carried the luggage into the bedroom.
Her brother complained about the small room.
For the first time that day, Elena almost smiled.
Then her phone vibrated.
She froze.
There was only one message.
Unknown Number: You can run, Elena. But secrets have a way of finding their way home.
Her smile disappeared.
She stared at the screen.
Who was watching her?
Before she could respond, another message appeared.
Unknown Number: Adrian isn't the only person looking for you.
Elena's blood ran cold.
She quickly locked her phone.
Someone knew she had left.
Someone knew Adrian was searching for her.
And suddenly, the Blackwoods were no longer the only people she had to fear.
Elena looked toward the dark window.
For the first time, she wondered if leaving Adrian had really been enough to keep her family safe.
Adrian drove through the city without knowing where he was going. The message from the unknown number remained on his screen.THE SECOND FILE IS ALREADY IN YOUR FATHER'S HANDS.He read it again. Then again. His father.Richard Blackwood had always been the calm one. The reasonable one. The person Adrian trusted whenever his grandfather's decisions became too harsh. But now every memory felt different.Adrian turned the car toward Blackwood Corporation. He needed answers. When he arrived, his security chief was waiting in the lobby.“Sir.”“Where is my father?”“He left about twenty minutes ago.”“Where did he go?”The man hesitated.“I don't know.”“Check his car.”“We already did.”“And?”“It wasn't in the parking garage.”Adrian pulled out his phone.“Track his phone.”“We tried.”“What do you mean you tried?”“His phone has been switched off.”Adrian's jaw tightened.“Since when?”“About thirty minutes ago.”Thirty minutes.Exactly when the message had arrived.“Find out where he w
Victoria Blackwood was having breakfast when Adrian walked into the mansion. She looked up calmly.“You came back.”Adrian didn't sit.“Where were you last night?”Victoria placed her cup down.“That's an interesting question.”“I found a message in Grandfather's private archive.”Her expression changed for less than a second. But Adrian noticed.“What message?”He placed the paper on the table.Victoria picked it up and read it.Her face slowly lost its color.“Where did you get this?”“That's not important.”“It is to me.”“Then tell me what happened.”Victoria looked toward the doorway.“Send the staff away.”Adrian turned toward the servants.“Leave us.”One by one, they disappeared. When the room was finally empty, Victoria stood.“You shouldn't be investigating this.”“Why?”“Because there are things you don't understand.”“I understand that you destroyed Elena's life.”Victoria flinched.“I was trying to protect you.”“You threatened her family.”“Yes.”“You forced her to disap
Adrian opened the door.Nobody was there.Only an envelope lay on the floor. He picked it up.“Don't touch that,” Charles warned.Adrian ignored him.He opened the envelope.Inside was a single photograph.A photograph of the Blackwood Corporation building. On the back was a handwritten message.THE FILE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR WAS NEVER DESTROYED.Adrian's eyes narrowed.“What file?”Charles stared at the photograph.“The missing agreement.”Daniel suddenly sat down.Elena noticed.“You know something.”Daniel rubbed his forehead.“I've known about that file for years.”Adrian turned toward him.“Where is it?”“I don't know.”“You're lying again.”“I don't know where it is now.”“But you know what it contains.”Daniel hesitated.“Yes.”Elena stepped forward.“What does it contain?”Daniel looked at her.“The truth about the agreement between our families.”Charles crossed his arms.“And the reason Alexander Blackwood wanted everyone to forget it existed.”Adrian stared at Charles.“What
The lights came back on.For several seconds, nobody moved.Elena was still holding the letter.Adrian stood beside her, his eyes fixed on the windows.“Did you hear that?” he asked.Daniel nodded.“The car.”Adrian immediately moved toward the door.“Stay here.”Elena grabbed his arm.“No.”He turned.“I’m not letting you walk into whatever is outside alone.”Adrian looked at her hand around his arm. Then at her face.Something softened in his expression.“You're still stubborn.”“I'm still scared.”The honesty caught him off guard.Elena released him.Charles walked toward the window and pulled the curtain aside. The road was empty. The car was gone.“Who was that?” Adrian asked.Charles didn't answer.“Charles.”“I don't know.”Adrian gave him a cold look.“You expect me to believe that?”“No.”Charles turned toward Elena.“But whoever was outside knows you're here.”Elena's stomach tightened.Daniel suddenly stepped forward.“We need to leave.”Charles looked at him.“Not yet.”“Y
“Finally.”Charles Vale's voice was calm, almost polite. That frightened Elena more than if he had shouted. She stood frozen in the middle of the room, one hand instinctively resting against her stomach.Adrian moved immediately, placing himself between Elena and the stranger.“Who are you?”Charles smiled faintly.“You already know my name.”“I asked who you are.”Charles looked past Adrian and fixed his eyes on Elena.“I’m the man your family should have told you about years ago.”Elena's heart tightened. She turned toward her father.“Dad?”Daniel didn't answer. That silence was enough.Elena stared at him in disbelief.“You know him?”Daniel finally looked at Charles.“I know exactly who he is.”Charles gave a humorless laugh.“And yet you never told your daughter.”Adrian's expression hardened.“What does my family have to do with you?”Charles slowly walked toward the table and placed a thick brown folder on it.“Your family has everything to do with me.”Adrian didn't move.“Th
The black car disappeared around the corner.Adrian remained by the window, watching the empty road.“They're still watching us,” he said.Elena wrapped her arms around herself.“Who?”“I don't know yet.”Her father walked toward the window and pulled the curtains shut.“We shouldn't stay here.”Adrian turned.“Where can we go?”Daniel hesitated. That hesitation told Adrian everything.“You already have somewhere in mind.”Daniel sighed.“There is a property my father left me years ago. It's outside the city.”“Is it safe?”“I've never told anyone about it.”“Then we'll go there.”Elena looked at Adrian.“You're coming with us?”Adrian stared at her.“You thought I'd find out I have a child and then leave?”“That isn't what I meant.”“I know.”His voice softened.“But I'm not leaving you alone again.”Elena's heart tightened. She had spent weeks convincing herself that Adrian was better off without her.Now that he was standing in front of her, she wasn't sure she could keep pretendin
