Se connecterMarie Sue's POV
As soon as I stepped into the Kensington mansion, it was as though I had stepped into a completely different world. I stood there in awe at how high the ceiling was, many meters above me. Lara stood beside me and nudged me on the shoulder. "Everyone gets that expression when they first step into this place," she said, smiling. I looked at her. "The architect who designed this building did so about a hundred and fifty years ago." "A hundred and fifty years old?" I could hardly fathom how a building could be that old and still look so elegant. "Your home is really beautiful," I said. "Thank you," she said. "Make yourself at home. I'll be right back in a minute." She took one of the sets of stairs leading away from the sitting room. Jordan didn't say a word to me. He disappeared through another set of stairs. Soon, I was alone in the sitting room. I looked around. Everything sparkled and shone. Even the sofa looked so expensive that sitting on it in my cheap clothes felt like an offense. I looked around and imagined what it would feel like to live in this place and be the mistress of such a house. "The maids don't have manners anymore," I heard someone say. I turned around and saw the most beautiful woman I'd ever laid eyes on. Her figure was slim, her skin shone like glass, her jet-black hair was styled to perfection, and her lips curved into a distasteful hiss. "Do you want to get fired?" I rose, confused and embarrassed. And then I recognized her instantly. Kylie. Again. "I... I... I..." I said, stammering. "You what?" she spat out, standing in front of me. "What's your name?" she asked, sizing me up with her eyes. "Marie Sue," I said with pent up anger from earlier rising in my chest. She repeated my name as though it were a disgusting blob of soup. "Don't they teach you manners, Marie Sue?" she asked. I wanted to explain to her that I wasn't a maid, but that I was Lara's guest and she had met me earlier. "You don't understand," I started to say. "What don't I understand?" She cut me short. "Kylie," Lara called from the staircase, and I exhaled the pent-up air in my chest. "Don't bother my guest." Lara said, descending the staircase. She looked from Lara to me and back to Lara. "That's Marie Sue, and she'll be working at the company as the head chef." She reached my side. "This is Kylie Brentwood," she said to me. "She and Jordan are good friends." I bowed my head politely. "It's a pleasure to meet you." She ignored my greeting. "She's the daughter of Henry Sue," Lara continued. She frowned. "You say his name like I'm supposed to know him. Who is he?" Lara laughed. "A renowned chef who would have been on the global stage, but he was too stubborn and would never share his recipes, no matter how much I tried to sway him." She looked at me and smiled. She was right. My father was a stubborn man. He loved his restaurant so much that no amount of money could tempt him away from it. But that restaurant was on the brink of extinction now. "So you think she'll be as good as her father?" Kylie asked, disgust still on her face as she looked at me. Lara smiled. "Even better. I have no doubt." "Then put her to a test," she said. "Let's see what she can do." "That won't be necessary," Lara said. "Why?" It was Jordan. "You trust her so much because she saved your life?" Kylie raised a brow. "Saved your life?" she asked. Lara looked at me. "I know you can do outstandingly well, but they're right. We have to put you to a test." I nodded and smiled. "I understand, ma'am." She placed a hand on my shoulder. "I know you'll do well. Everything you need will be provided to you in our state-of-the-art kitchen." I nodded again and smiled. I was about to whip up the nastiest plate of spicy Thai basil chicken with jasmine rice they had ever tasted. – Fifty minutes in, and I knew there was trouble. Nothing seemed right. The jasmine rice should have been light and fluffy by now, but it was unevenly cooked. Some grains were mushy while others still had a slight bite to them. The chicken wasn't caramelizing the way it should. Instead of developing a glossy coating from the sauce, it looked dull and watery. Even the aroma was wrong. The fragrant scent of garlic and basil should have filled the kitchen, but all I could smell was an odd sweetness. I frowned and dipped the spoon into the sauce. One taste made me freeze. This wasn't palm sugar. Someone had given me regular granulated sugar. I reached for another ingredient and stared at the bottle in disbelief. The dark soy sauce I had asked for had been replaced with light soy sauce, throwing off both the color and depth of flavor. I checked the tray of ingredients again. The chilies were a different variety too, milder and almost useless for the fiery dish I was trying to prepare. How could a professional chef allow so many mistakes? Then I turned to the stove. The flame was far too high. No wonder the sauce was reducing too quickly while the chicken remained improperly cooked. I adjusted the knob, only to discover it had been tampered with. The temperature indicator had been set incorrectly, making it appear lower than it actually was. I slowly looked around the kitchen. This wasn't an accident. I had to plate my dish, and I knew it was a mess. "Are you okay?" someone said, stepping into the kitchen. "It's been a while, and I'm so hungry." It was Kylie. "I'm not ready. I've messed things up, and..." I realized that telling her this was only making her more delighted. "Serve up, Chef," she said with a smile. "The house is waiting." I watched in desperate hope as the excitement on Lara's face turned into disappointment after the first bite. "Not quite like I know it," she said, then moved on to taste the chicken. She ate in silence after that. Jordan didn't hide his displeasure. "This isn't worthy of being attached to anyone's name," he said. Kylie played with her food. "Not quite shocking," she said. "What did you expect from a chubby chef? I bet she got fat from eating all the food her customers rejected." Lara shot her a look of disapproval. I felt like I had to defend myself. I stepped forward. "I'm sorry I disappointed you, Lara. There were..." I stopped. "I take full responsibility, and I'd like to redeem myself." She looked at me, but Jordan spoke before she could utter a word. "There's no redemption here, Chef. You can be the judge of this. Would you employ anyone who made this?" I looked at the plate, and the truth stared right at me. That wasn't me. "No," I said. "Good. We're done here." He pushed back his chair and stood up. Kylie followed suit. Lara stood up not long after. "Spend the night here, Marie. It's a long drive from the city. A room has been prepared for you." And just like that, a dream that had been presented to me was gone. But I had to make a choice, to watch the chance I had taken away from me or to fight for it. I decided to fight.KylieFinding out that Lara knew about the illegitimacy of my son kept me more up at night than the fact that Steven was lying in bed unconscious. Because Lara knowing the truth meant everything I was fighting for could be in vain.If she decided to go public with this information she had, then it might be over for me and my son, and she could easily convince Arnold to kick us out and take in another wife.More importantly, I was concerned that if Arnold found out that I had lied about his fertility results, he would have more reason to kick me out.I turned on the narrow bed to the other side and groaned loudly. I had a sore on my lip from biting it repeatedly.I had to think fast and act fast. Steven was at a critical point in his life where he needed absolute care. This was not the time for the truth to come out. There was not a time ever for the truth to come out, and I didn't mind killing to ensure that my son's real identity remained hidden. For now, I've been able to secure a p
Marie Sue I sat in the office, and the paper in my hand trembled, not from fright. I was not afraid. What I felt was far from fear, and that was what had pushed me right now into this office, with the paper in my hand, ready to make this decision.I read each line of the contract again to be sure I wasn't falling into a trap. Everything seemed fine, except for a few things I was not comfortable with.I looked up at Mr. Xing and the other man who sat beside him.“I have one thing I would like to modify,” I said. The lawyer looked at Mr. Xing and then at me.“What could that be?” he asked.I dropped the paper on the desk to stop it from shaking in my hands the way it was. I folded my fingers into each other and placed my folded hands on the desk. Then I looked straight at the lawyer.“My product remains mine,” I said. “Even if I work for the company and my product is being used, it remains mine.”The lawyer was about to speak, but Mr. Xing raised his hand and stopped him.“That is fine
Marie Sue What Arnold was suggesting was ridiculous, and I was about to let him know exactly how ridiculous he sounded. Not only was he making assumptions about me, but his reaction to what Kennedy was doing to his family was completely out of proportion. I could not understand why he seemed more concerned about what I had done than about the person who was apparently threatening his family. But before I could say a word, a lady appeared in front of us. We both turned to look at her."I'm sorry," she said. "I'm trying to find a room."I was about to point her toward the reception desk when Arnold greeted her in a surprisingly friendly manner."I didn't know you were here," he said."Oh, Kylie called me," she replied."You must be Arnold.""Yes," he nodded. And suddenly, I realized who she was.She was Marie Sue's stepmother.I faced her and stretched out my hand."I'm so sorry. You are Lydia Sue?" I asked. She took my hand, shook it warmly, and smiled."Yes, and you must be Jordan. I
Arnold I was hurrying towards the room with some items in my hand when I saw Kennedy walking down the corridor opposite me, looking around, obviously for the room Steven was in.I handed the materials over to the escort and directed him to the room, and then walked towards Kennedy, stopping him in his tracks.“What the fuck are you doing here?” I asked.I saw relief appear on his face as he saw me.“I was looking for you.”I pulled him away from the corridor into the closest safe space I could find.“Looking for me for what, Kennedy?”He clenched his jaw.“How could you keep this away from me? I find out that my son is sick from strangers.”I bit my lips hard. Kennedy was trying my patience in every way.I pushed the door to the room closed.“You are violating the terms of the contract, Kennedy. We said zero contact. Why do you feel we have to tell you anytime our son is sick? And you coming here every time he falls ill is just going to raise suspicions.”“I don't care,” he yelled. “
Jordan It was not clear, but I could make out Kennedy's face in it. It was unmistakably his. Added to the fact that he had been snooping around Kylie's office, it was safe to say that he was definitely stalking Kylie. But what was not clear to me was why he was doing that.I handed the phone over to Marie. "Something is definitely not right about Kennedy," I said.I didn't want to divulge much information, but now that I had started telling her about it, perhaps it was best I told her everything."I found something else," I said. "There's footage that shows Kennedy in the display area on the day the poisoning happened.""You think Kennedy did it?" she asked."He's a top suspect," I responded. "Given everything we have discovered so far about him, it's possible he's trying to sabotage the company one way or the other."She was nodding absentmindedly. I could tell she was calculating in her mind."And he was not alone," I added. "He was there with Lizzie, the lady who had to leave the
Marie Sue I groaned and rolled onto my side on the bed. Finally, I got to the edge. I stretched my hand, with my eyes still closed, and reached for my phone, turning off the alarm. It was not an alarm to get me ready for work. I was still not yet back at work in person. The alarm was a reminder that it was one day to Mr. Xing’s deadline.I lay back on my back and closed my eyes for a few seconds. Then I opened them and stared at the ceiling. Beside me, the bed was empty, meaning Lucy had probably slept over at Chad’s place after their date last night.I pushed myself into a sitting position and remained on the bed. I wasn’t sure what to do. I had never been more confused than this before. Finally, I was able to pull myself into the shower, wash my hair, brush my teeth, and basically prepare as though I was going to work. After cleaning up, I put on some house clothes and walked to the kitchen to fix some light breakfast.Just as I stepped into the sitting room, the door opened, and L
Marie Sue's POV We were here.A long, tree-lined driveway stretched ahead of us, the trees too perfect to be real, their branches softly illuminated by distant lights. The Kensington Mansion came into view then; a sprawling, white stone building with gold detailing and vast windows that reflected
Marie Sue's POV I drummed my fingers against my laps absentmindedly and didn't notice when Jordan parked the car until Lara announced.“We're here.” She said with excitement.Yay, I guess.I stepped out of the car and rounded it to join Lara and Jordan. My brows furrowed. Why were we standing in f
Marie Sue's POV I rose to my feet, not believing my eyes. “You?” “You two know each other?” Lara asked. “Yes.” “No.” I said no because I didn't want any trouble. Lara grinned. “I’m glad you two already know each other. Jordan, this is Marie, your future wife. Marie, this is Jordan, your fut
