If there is one thing I've learned since I returned to my grandmother’s house, it is that peace doesn't stay long.

It is beautiful, comforting, but can be destroyed at any time.

For Ruby’s sake, I wanted to preserve that peace as long as possible.

But I also knew I couldn’t afford to let her live oblivious, not when I have unfinished business with the Blacks.

So I began putting lessons into our days, gentle, almost like games.

As much as I hated to admit it, the Blacks could use Ruby as my weakness, but I could also use her as my weapon.

“Feet apart, Ruby,” I said one late afternoon. “Yes, like that. Good. Now pretend someone’s trying to push you, what do you do?”

She laughed. “I won't fall down!” she shouted.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Exactly. You hold your ground.”

Her eyes lit up, proud of herself.

She was only a child, still ignorant and innocent, but there was something inside her I recognized too well.

Something she shouldn’t have to bear, not at her age.

And yet, I

The envelope laid on the dining table. I hadn’t touched it again since I opened it. The rain had stopped outside, but in here it didn't feel like that.I poured myself another glass of water, though my hands trembled so badly I nearly spilled it. The words on the card echoed in my mind.** You are formally invited to discuss your choices.**It was a request. Not an invitation in any real sense. It was **bait**. Richard Black’s circle had set a trap, and brought it straight to my home.My stomach twisted. Every instinct told me to ignore it, but another part of me knew that ignoring Richard carried consequences too.I carried the glass back into the sitting room where Grandma waited. She’d already read the card once but said nothing.“What do you think?” I asked, though I already knew the answer. She didn’t look up. “I think Richard’s trying to make you dance to his tune. If you go, you **validate** his control. If you don’t…”“He does worse,” I finished."Exactly.”I sat on the

The rumors didn’t start with a whisper. It started out loud.By morning, the world had sunk its teeth into me. My phone wouldn’t stop vibrating against the nightstand. Notifications stacked faster than I could swipe them away, alerts from news stations, business journals, gossip blogs. My name trended on social media, hashtags changing by the second.#Ex-wifeOrBride#TheriseoftheLangstonbrideMy head ached as I looked at the screen. It wasn’t just the little anymore, it was everywhere. From the first pages of high-end business magazines to the littlest of blogs. My life had been converted into a headline.I dragged myself out of bed and walked into the kitchen. But even the silence there was broken when Grandma appeared, her hair tied back, her eyes sharp. She set her newspaper down on the table. Not one of those flimsy gossip stations, but a respected business journal. And there it was, placed across the front page.“Is Alessia Langston Engaged? Strategic Alliance Shakes the Ma

The first time I realized something was wrong, I was sitting in the kitchen with my laptop open, a cup of tea in my hand.Michael had left earlier that morning for some meeting downtown, the kind that his presence mattered more than any number.Ruby was at school, thank God. I had the house to myself. But that also meant silence.Too much silence.I should have been working. Grandma’s files, the ledger, I should have been working on all of that.Richard Black’s name was on every damn page of that evidence. But instead of going through it again, I looked through the daily newspapers, watching for any new thing. And there it was.Not secret, not buried, but bold.A bold headline that shouldn’t exist yet.“Enagement right after a divorce? Mystery Man Linked to Alessia Romano.”I froze.A photo stared back at me, blurry, zoomed in from across the street. I recognized the hotel behind me. It was Michael’s hotel. But it wasn’t a picture of us together. Clever. It was me leaving thr

I didn’t sleep that night. After Michael’s proposal, his voice firm, like he had already rehearsed the line a hundred times.I stayed awake staring at the ceiling, as I tried to understand what he meant. Marriage. Fake marriage, that's what he called it. Strategic. A shield. A weapon. The idea kept ringing in my head.Part of me wanted to laugh at how weird it was.Another part of me wanted to jump at the idea, knowing it would provide safety, especially for Ruby’s sake. And then there was the smallest part of me, that said the word marriage, in a way that didn't mean fake.By the time it was morning, I still hadn’t found an answer. Only one truth, I couldn’t protect Ruby alone anymore. Not against Richard Black. Not against Rowan. So when Michael returned that morning, I was already waiting in the parlor. He looked more exhausted than I did, but he was still so confident. In that moment, I saw the boy he was when we were kids, the boy who promised to protect me. And now he's

The council chamber was still echoing in my head even after the doors were shut.Rowan’s face, his sudden reappearance, was hard to forget. His eyes were still the same, sharp, possessive, and suffocating. A thousand memories came to mind, memories I had tried so hard to bury. For a moment, I became that frightened woman again, the one who had given up everything. But I wasn’t her anymore. I couldn’t be. Not with Ruby looking at me. Not with everything I had to lose.I tried to sleep that night, but every sound outside the window felt like Rowan was near.By midnight, I had given up.I sat in the sitting room. My thoughts going in endless circles. The Blacks would not stop. Richard had made that clear. Rowan’s return was only the first card he had played. There would be more. They wanted my bloodline, Ruby. But they would not have her. They would not have me.I wouldn't give them that.I didn’t hear the door open until his voice broke the silence.“You look like hell.”I

The letter sat in my hand long after I had read it, the Council’s seal stood there like a threatI could still hear my grandmother’s voice from that morning, soft but firm: “Don’t let them see you tremble, Alessia. They would feed on your weakness.”I wasn’t trembling, not outwardly at least. But inside, my heart was beating fast.Richard and Rowan had dragged me into the open. And now, if I fail, it wouldn’t just be me who paid the price, it would be Ruby, my grandparents and the fragile life I had begun to rebuild here.Michael met me just at the iron gates of the council building. He didn’t step too close, we knew better than to attract attention. But his eyes met mine.“Remember,” he said quietly, his voice a low so only I could hear. “they’ll try to break you with questions, with stares, with silence. Don’t let them. You control how things go."I nodded, “And if I make a mistake."He smiled slightly. “Then you'd get better. Everybody makes mistakes, Alessia. "I almost laugh
