NICHOLE'S POV

I sank into the bed, letting out a loud sigh. Images of the people protesting around the company flashed through my mind—carrying placards with "Give us back the life you took" boldly written on them.

I knew the people who held those placards were probably affected by the fake building materials, and honestly, I felt sorry for them. I also felt angry.

Angry that I still couldn't get to the bottom of all these things. The mysterious caller's ultimatum was still hanging over me—tomorrow was the D-day. What would happen if I didn't step down?

If I stepped down, would everything go back to normal? All these questions kept eating at my heart, but I couldn't find a perfect answer.

There was a knock at my door.

"Who is it?" I asked almost immediately.

"It's Thompson, ma'am."

"Oh, Thompson!" I sighed. "You can come in."

Thompson entered, giving me that 'Why don't you want to listen to me?' kind of look.
