LOGINLucy tried not to stare at him.
She failed miserably.
Hart Matthew sat across from her with the calm confidence of a man who owned everything around him.
Maybe he did.
Even the restaurant staff treated him differently.
Respectfully.
Carefully.
Almost fearfully.
Meanwhile Lucy sat stiffly in her chair trying not to panic over the five different forks placed beside her plate.
"You're nervous," Hart observed calmly.
"I wonder why."
A faint smirk touched his lips.
"You dislike luxury places."
"I dislike places where the water probably costs more than my monthly transport fare."
That actually made him laugh softly.
The sound caught her off guard again.
Lucy blinked.
"You laugh?"
"Occasionally."
"You should do it more often. You look less terrifying."
Hart leaned back slightly, golden-brown eyes fixed on her.
"Terrifying?"
"You walked into my campus with enough security to start a small war."
"That was minimal."
Lucy stared at him in disbelief.
Rich people were insane.
A waiter arrived moments later with their meals.
Lucy immediately froze after seeing the elegant dishes placed in front of her.
She quietly leaned closer to Hart.
"I don't know what any of this is."
His eyes darkened with amusement.
"It's pasta."
"Rich people pasta looks suspicious."
Hart looked dangerously close to smiling again.
Lucy hated how relaxed she felt around him sometimes.
That itself felt dangerous.
As they ate, silence settled briefly between them.
Not awkward.
Just heavy.
Intentional.
Hart watched her carefully throughout the meal.
Like he was studying every expression she made.
Every movement.
Every reaction.
It made Lucy self-conscious.
Finally she placed her fork down.
"You still haven't explained why me."
Hart's gaze remained steady.
"I did."
"No. You explained the contract. Not the reason."
Silence.
Then he finally answered.
"You interest me."
Lucy frowned immediately. "That cannot possibly be enough reason to marry someone."
"For normal people maybe."
"There you go again with the mysterious billionaire nonsense."
His expression remained unreadable.
"I watched you before approaching you."
Lucy stiffened slightly.
"How long?"
"A few weeks."
Her eyes widened instantly.
"You WHAT?"
"You work hard."
"That's not the point!"
"You never complain."
"That still isn't the point!"
Hart ignored her outrage calmly.
"You smile at customers even when exhausted. You help people even when struggling yourself. You continue moving forward no matter how difficult things become."
Lucy fell silent slowly.
Nobody had ever noticed those things before.
Nobody.
"You observed all that?" she whispered.
"Yes."
Something shifted quietly inside her chest.
Dangerous warmth.
She quickly pushed it away.
"That still doesn't explain marriage."
Hart's expression darkened slightly this time.
"My grandmother is pressuring me to marry Vanessa."
Lucy instantly understood.
"And you don't want her."
"No."
"So I'm your escape plan."
"You're more than that."
The words came too quickly.
Too naturally.
Hart seemed to realize it immediately because silence followed afterward.
Lucy's heartbeat quickened unexpectedly.
Before she could process it properly, he reached into his pocket and slid another document toward her.
"The contract terms."
Lucy stared at it nervously.
"You really came prepared."
"I dislike wasting time."
She slowly opened the file.
Inside were several pages neatly organized.
Rules.
Conditions.
Agreements.
The seriousness of everything suddenly became painfully real again.
Lucy scanned the first page carefully.
RULE ONE: The marriage remains secret from the public temporarily.
RULE TWO: Lucy Jade will continue her education uninterrupted.
RULE THREE: Hart Matthew will clear all educational and personal debts immediately after agreement.
RULE FOUR: Both parties will maintain public respect toward each other at all times.
RULE FIVE: No romantic obligations required.
Lucy paused there.
No romantic obligations.
Why did that sentence bother her slightly?
She continued reading quietly.
RULE SIX: Lucy Jade will move into the Matthews residence after marriage.
RULE SEVEN: Divorce occurs after one year if both parties agree.
Lucy slowly looked up again.
"You really thought through all this."
"I think through everything."
That much was obvious.
Lucy closed the file carefully.
"This still feels unreal."
Hart leaned slightly forward.
"Then let me make it simpler."
His intense gaze locked onto hers completely.
"You need help."
Lucy looked away instantly.
"And I need someone I can trust standing beside me."
Her chest tightened.
Trust.
That word sounded strangely personal coming from him.
"You barely know me."
"I know enough."
Silence stretched between them again.
Lucy hated how tempting the offer sounded.
Freedom from debt.
Security.
A chance to breathe again.
Maybe for the first time in years.
But the cost terrified her.
Because deep down.
She already knew this arrangement would never remain simple.
Not with a man like Hart Matthew.
A soft vibration interrupted the moment.
Hart glanced at his phone.
His expression immediately turned cold.
Lucy noticed it instantly.
"What happened?"
Instead of answering, he slowly turned the phone screen toward her.
Lucy's breath caught sharply.
Photos.
Pictures of them together outside campus yesterday.
Headlines already spreading online.
MYSTERY WOMAN SPOTTED WITH BILLIONAIRE CEO HART MATTHEW.
WHO IS THE GIRL BESIDE MATTHEWS ENTERPRISES CEO?
Lucy's face slowly lost color.
"Oh my God."
Hart's jaw tightened dangerously.
And for the very first time since meeting him.
Lucy saw genuine anger in his eyes
Hart didn't breathe. His gaze was on the unoccupied side of the bed.The blanket was still warm. But Lucy was gone."Lucy?"No answer. He went around the bathroom.Empty.The balcony.Empty.His heart raced crazily."Lucy!"He went into the hall."Security!"Ethan came out of the other corridor in less than a few seconds."Sir?""Where is my wife?"Ethan's expression changed.“She was in your room.”"She isn't now.""What?"He was picked up on the shoulder by Hart.Lock up the house!Ethan hurriedly pulled out his cell phone.Everyone, Code Black, everybody stays at the estate.Throughout the mansion, the alarms started going off.The security guards went into the corridors.Hart ran downstairs."Check every exit!""Yes, sir!""Search the gardens!""Yes, sir!"“Look in the basement garage,”Ethan came in second."Sir, no one has come out the outside guards haven't seen anybody leave. She's still here, then.Hart stopped. His mind raced.Somebody had gone off with Lucy but not raised t
Lucy stared at Hart. She was unable to take in what he just said for several seconds.“Are they going to kidnap me?”His fingers gripped her, firm, tight."Yes."Her heart started to beat rapidly."Who?""I don't know yet."But how is it possible to know?Hart's jaw tightened.“He or she who left that file knew exactly what he/she was doing.”He tightened his embrace and drew her to him."And I'm not going to wait until they make their move."Lucy swallowed."What are you going to do?""Protect you.""How?"His eyes hardened.“You shall never leave this mansion.”Lucy stared at him."What?""Until I know who is behind this, you're staying here."Hart, I'm in class."No.""My exams—""No.""My job—""I'll handle it."Lucy pulled her hand from his.“They can't shut me up in this house!”Hart looked at her.I don't want to control you.If only I could just tell you what I'm doing?I'm here to save YOU!His voice was suddenly loud and harsh.Lucy fell silent.Hart took a deep breath and t
The bedroom door handle slowly turned.Lucy stopped breathing.Hart rushed forward and went to stand in front of her.One arm resting behind him, telling her to stay out of it.Everything about him had changed. The teasing husband of just a few moments was now gone. The ruthless CEO that everyone was afraid of stood in his place. The handle was moved again.Slowly.Hart's eyes narrowed. He looked over to the bedside table. His cellphone was there. No signal.Security system was still all off."Ethan," Hart whispered.Nothing.He pressed the intercom once again.Have everyone move to the east side of the building.Static answered him.Lucy held on to his back of his shirt."Hart..."He glanced over his shoulder."I'm here."What shall we do?"Stay behind me.""But—""Lucy."His voice softened."Please."That one word brought her to a halt.Hart was very rarely polite. She nodded."Okay."He looked back towards the door. The handle came to a stop.Silence.Five seconds passed. Then ten.
Lucy remained motionless at the door to Hart's bedroom. The room was dominated by a king-sized bed, which was covered with dark wooden frames and luxurious grey silk sheets. She swallowed nervously. Is there any other bed?Hart shut the door after them."No."Lucy sighed.I wanted one to magically appear, said I.“There are no miracles, I don't do miracles. She crossed her arms."No?""No.""You've disappointed me."It was the first time that evening that Hart smiled.I will work more diligently when I go to work next morning.Lucy blinked.Was... was he joking? She pointed at him."You're smiling again.""I am.""And making jokes.""I'm adapting.""To what?"His eyes met hers.Life together with my wife.Lucy's cheeks got red.Lucy's cheeks turned red, immediately. She didn't wait long before she turned away without him noticing.Hart went to the wardrobe and grabbed a well-packed oversized black T-shirt.He gave it to her."Sleeping will be easier in this.Lucy studied the T-shirt."
The night's cool breeze fluttered on the balcony.Using both hands, Lucy held a mug of hot chocolate, trying to soothe her roaring heart. Then, the words of Hart echoed in her mind, and never went away.Well if I had known this was going to happen I would have married you sooner. She raised her gaze to him.His face was appeased, but his eyes were now shining with something she had never before seen."Hart..."Before she could ask him his question:Ethan ran out onto the balcony."Sir!"There was no doubt that Hart was now taking it seriously."What happened?"The east fence in the garden had its motion sensors set off.Lucy's hands tightly gripped the mug.“Has somebody been there in the house?”Ethan nodded. It's been a while since we have witnessed fresh tracks in our security people.Hart's eyes darkened.“Have they arrested the intruder?”"No."The area guards arrived he was gone.Hart didn't hesitate.Lock up the entire property."Already in progress."I want to retrieve all the
The trip back to the Matthews Mansion was a quiet one.Lucy was sitting next to Hart as she repeated Ethan's words in her head.“Photos of you months before you were wed…”She held her arms around her body. She was filled with a peculiar anxiety that settled into her heart. She'd never met Adrian Blackwood before. Then why was he watching her?Hart breathed out a gasp at the trembling of her fingers. He reached out and laid his hand over her, but didn't say another word. His palm was warm.Steady.Grounding.Lucy looked at him.“Don't worry me.”The tip of his thumb ran across the back of her hand."I know.""Then why are you?"His golden eyes never strayed from the road."Because you're scared."Lucy attempted to make light of it."I'm not—"“You've been making a ring of rings for the past five minutes.”She looked down.He was right. She wasn't even aware that she was doing it.“Do you notice everything, you?”"When it comes to you..."He paused."I try to."A faint blush crept onto
