Ayla's pov
The packhouse buzzed with an excitement that didn’t quite reach me. The eve of the moon ball was always a bubbly evening for Silver fang packs, there were decorations and lights and scented candles. The ball was held every year and done just the same way… Well all except this one. This one was different because I was turning eighteen tomorrow, I was going to shift for the first time and I was going to meet the one… “Oops" someone giggled The basket of clothes that suddenly disappeared from my grip disrupted my train of thoughts. “Your adopted clumsiness is showing, Ayla" Lila and her group of mean girls stepped in front of me “Give me back the basket" forcing myself not to react Lila stepped closer, flipping her long blond hair over her shoulder. She was the daughter of the Gamma, adored and mated to the Alpha’s son of our pack and unfortunately, the pack's reigning queen of cruelty. While I was one of the many daughters of the Beta of the Alpha to our pack. “You mean the basket?" She smiled wickedly as she overturned the clothes in it, scattering them across the floor. I press my lips together to pull myself together. "Aren't you excited for tomorrow, little orphan?” She asked, her smile was vicious as she crossed glances with the girls by her side "your big shift? Or will you embarrass the beta family when nothing happens” They all giggled. My jaw tightened, I was indeed adopted but she loved using the wrong word because she knew it cut deeper. “Tomorrow has to come before you make assumptions" I reached for the empty basket in their grip but they only snatched it further away from my reach. “Why? You don't think you will actually shift.. Do you?” Lila asked “Ayla doesn't know the moon goddess doesn't waste her powers on weak blood” one of the girls said as they all laughed "That too an adopted weak blood" Lila added “Then the pack will finally know where she belongs," another of the girls beside her scoffed. "I belong where the Beta says I do” I said quietly, as I crouched to gather together the clothes that fell. Lila nudged my shoulder with her foot, knocking off what I had gathered out of my hands again. "Beta Rowan only took you in out of pity” she hissed "Don't get any hopeful ideas" I didn't look up. If I did, they'd see the sting in my eyes and I didn't want to give them that satisfaction. As they tried to force me up. “Leave her alone Lila,” someone said from the other end of the corridor “else I'll tell the Beta" further threatened Lila scoffed. "Should have known the maid's daughter will come to save you" she flung the basket at me "stupid orphan" With that they all walked away, their laughter echoing down the corridor. Juno was one of the maids' daughters who found her mate two years ago. She was nice to me and surprisingly one of the few who could stand against the mean girls. She walked towards me “Don't let their words get to you, Ayla," she said quietly. "Ignore her, she's just mad her wolf's probably a yappy chihuahua” she joked while helping me arrange the clothes into the basket and taking my hand, making sure I was on my feet before letting it go. I gave her a curt nod that I was okay. “Are you ready for tomorrow?” she asked “No" I was being honest “You scared?" Still peering into my eyes I shook my head “I'm terrified" “Of the shift?" I couldn't tell her that while I got picked on because of my shift, my father was more worried about me finding a mate, it was all he ever talked about. He reminded me everyday of how a she wolf needed a mate and that was what really determined where she belonged. “What if my wolf isn't good enough” I started to say "or what if I don't shift at all, what if Lila is right and I'm just adopted and not entitled to any of the moon goddess powers” She placed her arm on my shoulder to calm me, squeezing lightly "You are entitled to everything this pack has, you're the Beta's daughter” I sighed, again no one knew the part where I felt like I was an outcaste. “I just want to matter" my voice broke “You do" she encouraged, squeezing harder “to your father, to the moon goddess and tomorrow to the whole pack" The corner of my lips suddenly lifted in a stiff smile as she smiled back at me. Her words made me exhale. “Thank you" I say while she arched her brow at me “for being so nice to me" her smile only grew. "Go, you should prepare for tomorrow, no one shifts with a heavy heart" With that, I went back to my room and slumped on the bed, I felt like my whole life was balanced on the edge of a blade. But If I shifted properly then the whispers would finally stop, the doubts, my father's silent hatred and the comments about being the outcast daughter. If not, I wasn't sure what would happen to me, to what little respect I still held. I heard wolves howling from a distance, chilling air brushing against my skin through my window. My heart thudded like it was about to burst through my chest, then I recalled what Juno said about a heavy heart, I took deep breaths to calm myself. Hours from now, I would stand under the full moon and everything would change, for worse or better. My heart still thudded from thinking about it. I pressed my palm against my chest as I tried to steady my breathing. No matter how much fear coiled in my stomach or how loud Lila's cruel words echoed in my head.. A part of me still hoped that tomorrow, for once, I wouldn't be an outsider and the moon would claim me like it claimed everyone else. I closed my eyes. The countdown had begunAyla's povI woke up before my alarm, staring at the ceiling with anticipation of my meeting with the unknown today. I showered minutes after and brushed my hair into a sleek fall, allowing the straight stands to fall past my shoulders while I applied mascara and some liner and the contact lens. I applied some Kylie cosmetics and wore a regular Kiton suit, one of my Chanel bags across my shoulders and a black Louis Vuitton kitten heels.I stared at the mirror and reached for my wolfsbane perfume. ‘Don’t even dare’ Nyx growled I rolled my eyes and proceeded to try to spray ‘You know it hardly works…. Plus if you want to take out the unknown today. If anything happens, you need me’And that was tempting. I let out a small sigh of defeat as I picked up a regular smart collection and spritzed. All I had to do was act normal, avoiding any intense emotions that could trigger Nyx.When I came downstairs, Clara was sitting on one of the couches, tapping away on her phone. “And the q
Ayla's povI swerved right towards my villa. My grip tightened as I drove slowly through the gates that opened automatically. My penthouse was magnificent, painted all white with an interior decoration worth millions of dollars and so was my garage, decorated with cars also worth millions of dollarsAs a werewolf I never saw the need for guards, the only company I had was the only friend I had here in the human world, ‘too much eyes on me could risk everything’ I'd tell myself as a precaution, which pretty much sounded stupid now since there was someone out there aware of my existence. Maybe there were more than one, maybe it was the whole pack here in Seattle..I stepped on the brakes and parked. My forehead merged with the steering wheel as I sighed heavily, I turned my head and glanced towards my phone, waiting for some sort of miracle, probably a text that said this was all a joke. Instead a call came in. Aiden. I gathered all I had in me before taking the call“Um hey Babe"
Ayla's povFive years since I walked out of Silver fang Pack with nothing but a shredded heart and a broken name. And somehow…somehow, I built a life anyway.“Miss Voss, files came in from elite fashion hub" my secretary said curtly. "Leave them on my desk" Seattle was a city to die for. I flickered the ash from the bottom of the cigarette, my Red bottom heels , tapping on the silver marble floor as I watched from my exclusive twentieth floor view of the world at night. This was Luxurious Lara, the boutique and jewelry firm I built from nothing but forged transcripts and forged names. It was now the most exclusive clothing and jewel company. My office had floor to ceiling panels reflecting the soft golden lights of the mini chandelier. There were sample fabrics on the silver glass table and sketches pinned across a giant wall grid. My work was featured in magazines My designs worn by influencers My name is respected. I was now Elara Voss. No longer the girl who fled barefoot
Ayla's povBy the time I reached Silver fang pack territory, dawn was breaking. I ran all night, the gravel of the forest biting into my bare feet, I refused to let Nyx take me since I wanted the pain, I needed it. It would be proof that I was still alive after what he had done to me. I stopped at the edge of the courtyard, wolves already gathering. I caught the sight of Lila, of course she would be there, arms folded with a smug smile on her face, it was almost as if she was waiting for me. I looked around while clutching the hem of my dress, it was as though everyone already knew what happened but then I walked with a straight face. I didn't expect a warm welcome but I wished for at least familiarity. I wished for someone to share my grief. As I reached towards our pack house, I walked into the pack yard and all I felt was dread. Harsh voices rose instantly. “What is she doing back here?" "Didn't she leave with her prince charming?” Another called out. " He probably sent
Ayla's povAfter the party, my father wasted no time to send me off with Killian but I didn't bother to protest since with Killian, I felt at ease and safe. I loved him already. Thankfully Blood moon pack house was nothing like Silver fang. Where Silver fang was cold stoned and extreme hierarchy, Blood moon was basking with warmth, radiated soft lights and filled calm air. Wolves bustled around as if the whole pack was dipped in sunlight. In here it was hard to tell who belonged and who didn't. And they welcome me, really welcomed meKillian also took pride with me around him, my arm hooked around his as we walked past his pack and towards the palace house. “Luna-to-be" someone whispered as I passed “She's so gorgeous" “Alpha Killian must be really blessed by the moon goddess" 'They love us.'My wolf whispered which made me smile even more. Women hugged me without hesitation, warriors bowed their heads respectfully, even the pups tugged at my dress, wanting to know if I cou
Ayla's povThe grand hall was decorated exquisitely, since this was a ball not only for our pack but for other neighboring packs. The air smelt of fresh pine and the scented candles and the pack members were dressed in shades of midnight blue while others outside the pack wore moon-white dresses, they moved in elegant circles and their laughed filled the air. Everyone looked perfect and confident. Everyone but me. I forced a smile while I stood at the top of the staircase, smoothing my simple white dress and the moon pendant I owned, the only thing I had on me that was mine when father brought me into this pack. My palms were sweating, so badly that I thought they might actually drip but I could only bit down my lip to hide my tension. I looked down at my father, Beta Rowan, who I hadn't noticed had been waiting at the foot of the stairs. his arms were crossed as he said. “You took long enough, thought you'd faint before the ceremony, that would have been… impressive” his tone w
