I am in shock. I am riddled with shock. I can't even move my feet further.
My mouth falls open at the sight before me. When I inputted the address of Double H Tech into my GPS, I didn't think it would take me to this place.Heather told me they were big, but they aren't big. They are huge. I can't even try to guess the number of floors in the building, but I know it is over twenty, and it isn't just a square building. It is curved so it is U-shaped."Close your mouth. You'll attract flies."I snap my mouth shut, looking beside me, my eyes falling on a woman the same height as me. When I take her form in though, I realize her heels are a lot higher than mine. She has wavy blonde hair and sharp green eyes. Her makeup is perfectly done, accentuating the color of her eyes and she's putting on a dress that hugs her body and stops at her mid-thigh. It is the perfect combination of classy and sexy. I envy her."What are you doing here?" She asks, probably realizing I'm definitely not a client if I'm standing outside the building and gawking at it."I'm new here," I inform her."Obviously." She sasses and I'm shocked by her behavior. Why is she being rude? She doesn't even know me! "You're the person Zoey said she was hiring? How did you get this job?"I frown. "I applied for it?""Sure? And what incentive did you use?""Look here, miss." I start when I decipher the disdain in her voice. "I don't know you. You don't know me. I'm here to work and not to put up with your shit okay? It's obvious you're already an employee here and I doubt our employer will take well to how you treat newer employees."I watch as her eye twitches when I emphasize on the word, 'our'. "Go on and report to him if you'll even get the opportunity to see him."I shake my head, knowing she's not going to back down. I know women like her. They were mostly insecure and unsure of themselves, fearing someone else would take their job when they came along.I hold back a sigh. I'm not even fully an employee here yet, but I already have an enemy. I don't reply to her as I finally make my way towards the huge ass door at the front, pushing it open.My eyes immediately find the receptionist and I walk toward him. He smiles brightly at the sight of me. "Good morning. How may I help you?""I've been recently employed and the manager requested for me to come in today so I could sign my employee contract.""One sec. What's your name?""Aria Jennings."He looks through his computer for a minute before looking back at me. "ID?"I quickly open my purse and take out my ID, handing it over to him. He hums in approval and gives it back to me, together with a visitor's card. I look at the card in confusion and he quickly rushes to explain."It's for the elevator. Since you don't have an employee card yet, you'll need a pass to use the elevator.""Oh.""Yes. The manager is on the 19th floor, but I'm certain you'll see her assistant instead."I nod, consuming the information, before turning around to approach the elevator. I stop short and turn back around. "What's your name?"If I'm going to be working here, I need to know at least one friendly face. "Grayson."I can't conceal my snort. Typical. Thankfully, he doesn't get offended. He only gives me a look that says 'I know right?' and shrugs. "See you around," I call out, seeing him smile before I walk toward the lift. When I step inside the elevator, I see a slot for the card and I swipe it though before the buttons on the wall light up. Fucking hell. How advanced is this company? I press on the nineteenth floor and wait patiently. It seems like it takes forever before it finally reaches the nineteenth floor. When I step out, I pause for a second, taking the floor in. It looks very elegant with everything being white or gold. There's another reception here and I approach the receptionist. This one is not as friendly as the one from before, only greeting me with a curt, "hello.""Good morning. I have an appointment with the managerial department by nine o'clock.""Name and ID.""Aria Jennings," I answer, simultaneously showing him my ID card."Go wait in that room over there." He points to a gold door opposite me. "She will be with you shortly."I thank him and walk in the direction he pointed me to, opening the gold door to reveal what looks like a conference room. Hesitantly, I step inside and take a seat on one of the many chairs.I don't have to wait too long because in less than a minute, I hear the door open and I fix my eyes in that direction as a woman who looks like she's in my age range walks in. But she's on a pantsuit and her hair is in a sophisticated bun."Hello, Ms. Jennings. I'm Zoey, the assistant manager."She stretches out a hand that I stand up to take before sitting down as well."So basically, you've already been hired, but we need to go through the contract so we can revise what you're not comfortable with."I don't speak because I know I won't be able to keep the awe off my voice. She flips through the file in her hand. "It states here that you're to come in by nine thirty latest, is that alright?"I scrunch up my nose in confusion. That's an odd time to start work, but I agree anyway. It works for me. "Nine thirty to?""Five, but sometimes, you might be required to work overtime if there's a deadline."I nod my head. "That's okay. When's my lunch break though? Because I'll need to pick my son up from school.""Can't his father do that?"I bite my lip to suppress the building emotions. I hate it when I'm reminded of his absence. It's like I don't believe he's really not here. "He's dead."An uncomfortable myriad of expressions crosses her face, guilt being at the forefront. "I'm sorry. When do you want your break? It lasts for an hour.""Does twelve-thirty work?"Of course."Then, she passes the file to me and I look through it carefully, seeing that everything was done to my liking. When I reach the last page, I see two dotted lines at the end of the page, one of which has already been signed. "So, I sign here?""Yes."I don't waste any time in signing and giving it back to her. She smiles brightly at me."Welcome to Double H Tech.""Thank you."She looks at the spot where I put down my signature and stares at me like she's trying to figure me out.I laugh nervously. "What's wrong?""Nothing." She quickly answers. "I'm just wondering what's special about you. I mean, I've gone through your resume and it's impressive, especially the projects you've completed, but it's eerie that the boss will accept you without an interview."I frown. "The boss?""Yes, he requested for you to be hired immediately, even before you sent in your application. Maybe, he sees something in you."I freeze. He sees something in me? The fucking boss sees something in me? Does this mean… no. "Uhm, forgive me but who's the boss."She opens her mouth, going to answer, but closes it back when the door slams open. She immediately scrambles to her feet. "Good day, sir.""Leave." He says without looking at her as he stares directly at me, unblinking.I should've expected it; I don't know why I didn't honestly. He was too good to be true, he had to have a hand in all these. As Zoey leaves, I crack my brain for something to say to him. I've been hoping to see him again because I had a few grateful words for him, but now that I have seen him, I don't know what to say.The only word that exits my trap of a mouth is, "You.""Me." He replies unblinking. I don't know what to say. I look at him from head to toe. He's dressed in a three-piece suit and his tie is in place, unlike the last time I saw him. His hair is jelled backward and his eyes are a perfect mix of blue and green. He has a tattoo on his left middle finger that I didn't notice the night before. It's the drawing of a crown. I wonder what it means.Gabriel hums, the sound bringing my eyes back to his face. I watch as his eyes trail appreciatively across my body. "At least, you're not wearing a half-wet shirt this time.""What the fuck?" I ask, standing up from the chair. He watches me, amused, and arches an eyebrow. "I asked you if we would see again!"I don't know why that exits my mouth, but it already has and I can do anything to change it. "It depends." He repeats what he told me."Well, I didn't plan to see you again like this.""How would you rather see me?""I don't know, but definitely not with you handing over a job on a fucking silver
Gabriel Hernsburg. That's who I'm working for. After making a few inquiries, I find out that Hernsburg stands for one of the H(s) in Double H Tech. I don't know what the other one means, and neither do the staff as well."Morning, Grayson." I greet him as I walk past him and he flashes me a handsome smile in return. When I was leaving the other day, he asked me if I was officially a staff here, and was happy to hear that the answer is positive.I still don't know how to feel about that by the way. When I reach the elevator, I see that someone else is already standing and waiting for it. It's the bitchy woman from the last time. She sees me too, but she doesn't acknowledge my presence. Only when we both enter the elevator and I don't press a button after her does she scoff in contempt. "Of course, you're also on the fifteenth floor."I shake my head. "Hello to you too, stranger.""It's Nessa!" She snaps like I actually care what her name is. "I'm Aria. Nice to meet you."I hold back
"I'm fucking tired."Gabriel looks up at my entrance, somehow not seeming surprised to see me. "Aria," he muses, dropping his pen on the document before him. "What did I say about your foul mouth?""Fuck that and fuck this.""Fuck what exactly?""This!" I snap, waving my arms wound to emphasize my point. "All of this. I can't work where I'm not welcome. I'd like to terminate my contract, please."My dilemma seems like entertainment to him. He stands up from his chair, making me take a step back involuntarily. He expels a chuckle, but doesn't stop as he rounds his table, coming to a stop in front of it, and leaning back against it. "It's your first day.""And my last."He arches a sharp eyebrow that has me momentarily pausing to admire his perfectly shaped brow. My eyes run across his face, his almond-shaped eyes, his slightly pointed nose, his pretty ass lips, his angular face, and his sharp jawline, and I marvel at how someone can be so perfect. God really has a favorite. I'm about t
I try to stop Gabriel, but he's so much stronger than me and my pulling doesn't seem to faze him. Instead, he's pulling me along with him."Gabriel!" I try to plead with him."Mr. Hernsburg." He corrects unfailingly, not even pausing in his steps to look at me.When he enters the elevator, I follow suit. I thought I was stubborn until I met this man who seems to always have his way. "Why are you doing this?"He gives me a side glance. "You don't even know what I'm doing."I pause as he turns to look straight ahead. He's right. I don't know what he's about to do, but I know it won't help my reputation. I open my mouth to keep protesting but shut it back when I realize that my attempts will be futile.Instead, I take a minute to appreciate his side profile. His nose looks pointier and his jawline looks sharper, but maybe, that's just because he's quite angry.I don't realize we've reached the fifteenth floor until I hear the ping of the elevator stopping. There's chatter on the other si
Gabriel can be a dick. What he did on my first day was enough to ruin my reputation, but that didn't stop him from calling me into his office every fucking day and I've already been working here for more than two months. He usually doesn't have any legit reason to call me up, but he always does and everyone knows that he does yet there's nothing I can do about it.I can only obey him since he's my boss and I don't want to lose my job, despite not liking the circumstances which I got them."Are you even listening to me?" "Hmm?" I ask Belle distractedly."Yeah, she's not listening to you," Marcus concludes.Marcus is the man that told me to go on with my presentation on the first day. Luckily, he didn't have anything against me, so it was easy for us to become friends.Apart from Belle and Marcus, there are two other people in our little group. One of them is Stacy, Belle's friend from another department. She's kind of a female tech bro down to the cute huge glasses on her face that ar
I take a deep breath before knocking on the door. Belle had seen me coming up here and she'd winked at me. I flipped her off.I knock on the door again when I don't hear any response. Still nothing. Frowning, I try the handle, but it doesn't budge. It's locked. Did he go home when he told me to see him after work?Stepping back with a sigh, I am more than ready to leave and go home to Lucas when I hear the click of the door. Following the sound, the door opens and Gabriel steps back for me to enter.I take a good look at him. He looks exhausted like he has had a long day at work. I watch him as he walks to his couch and falls animatedly on it. I take a hesitant step inside."Lock the door behind you."My mind automatically drifts to Shawn, but I quickly shake the thoughts out of my head. Gabriel isn't like that. He won't force me to do what I don't want to do. Deciding to trust him, I lock the door before approaching him. "Gabriel?"His lips twitch in a tired smile. "It's Mr. Hernsbu
"Look what I found."I turn around at the sound of Lucas' voice and see him holding up two, dollar notes. I feign surprise. "Wow, the tooth fairy must love you."Lucas rolls his eyes — a habit he's beginning to pick up from me — stuffing it into his jean pocket. "I know it's you, mommy. I'm not as gullible anymore."I raise my eyebrow at the word he used. It seems like he's learning a new word each day. Unlike other kids, Lucas has taken a liking to read. A few days ago, he came to me, asking for books and comics and I'd just gotten my first paycheck so I didn't mind at all. The paycheck was quite… generous. I grin at him. "Whatever do you mean?""There's no tooth fairy.""Yet you kept your tooth under your pillow."He grins back at me. "I could do with a dollar or two." I shake my head with a small smile as I turn back around at the sound of the toaster."What? You plan on spending it on Ally?""What are you making?" He swiftly changes the subject and I can't help but laugh, taking
"And then, you hear the voice of voice over artist saying—""Times up. That's a wrap for today. We'll continue this meeting tomorrow." Nessa announces, cutting me off. I can't help the scowl that appears on my face. "I'm not done with my pitch."Nessa smiles sweetly at me, standing up and packing up her files. "It's not my fault the meeting was set to go on for only an hour."My other colleagues are torn in between leaving as well or staying to let me complete my pitch because it's lunch break. I'm tempted to tell Nessa to go fuck herself, but I know it won't be very professional of me. So I bite back my words, disconnect my laptop from the projector and walk out of the conference room with the lot.I don't go to my cubicle though. I follow Nessa to her office. She's one of the only people with an office on our floor, but she's definitely the only one who exploits the power that comes with it."What do you want now?" She asks when she glimpses at me behind her. Immediately after she
