Rosalie’s POV

I didn’t open the door at first

I stood still, frozen as the knocking continued.

Firm, heavy, deliberate.

I shut the laptop.

My heartbeat pulsed behind my eyes.

I didn’t need to ask who it was.

Another knock.

“Rosalie.”

His voice. Hoarse,low

“Open the door.”

I stepped away from it.

Backed into the room like it was a crime scene

“Please”

The lock clicked.

I didn’t touch it, it was him.

He had the key.

The door creaked open and Alessandro stood there.

Shirt unbuttoned, tie loose, hair disheveled, drunk.

His eyes looked like they hadn’t slept in a year.

He stepped in slowly then shut the door behind him

“Why are you here?” I asked, voice small

“I had to see you.”

He staggered slightly but caught himself.

Walked past me and sat down on the edge of the bed like it was his

“Do you even realize what you did?” I asked, heart pounding.

His eyes met mine bloodshot but something raw inside them

“You don’t understand" he muttered “I didn’t mean to-”

  • The CEO's pawn    CHAPTER 22: Just One Month

The phone call came in the middle of a quiet afternoon.Rosalie had been lost in thoughts on the couch when her phone buzzed. She stared at the name flashing across the screen; Sant'Elena Private Hospital and felt the air still around her.She answered on the third ring, already holding her breath"Hello?"The voice on the other end was polite, too distant to carry bad news softlyMoretti Enterprises had officially withdrawn funding, there was no appeal, no reconsideration. Her mother would be allowed to continue treatment for one more month, no more. After that, unless full payment was made, she would be discharged.Rosalie didn’t cry, she didn’t shout. She sat very still on the couch and listened until the call ended. Then she placed the phone on the armrest beside her, stood up slowly and walked to the sink. She filled a glass with water and sipped it, staring out the window, trying not to crumble.Only one month. She should have seen it coming, she had typed the resignation her

  • The CEO's pawn    CHAPTER 20:When power fails

The silence inside his suite was not peaceful, it was heavyThicker than the smoke from the half lit cigar he’d abandoned in the ashtray.Thicker than the burn in his throat from the brandy he poured too quickly And it only grew heavier each minute. The room was dim, lit only by a single lamp. Alessandro sat slouched in the leather chair, sleeves rolled up, collar open, a drink cradled in one hand, his phone in the otherBut he wasn’t reading anything. He was staring at her name; Rosalie Biancostill sitting in his inbox next to the email she hadn’t sent yet. He knew it. He could feel it. If she hadn’t resigned already, she was about to.He looked away. The vision of her face how it crumbled under the weight of his voice hadn’t left him since the moment the words escaped his mouth."You should go, you clearly don’t belong here."He flinched just thinking about itThat hadn’t been about the glass. Not really. That had been about Paolo. About the way the man smiled at her

  • The CEO's pawn    CHAPTER 19: What Was Left Unsaid

Rosalie’s POV The hotel room was quiet that night, Too quiet. I stood by the window, the city of Rome sprawled out beneath me like a glittering secretI could still feel his eyes on me, even hours laterAt the dinner, Alessandro hadn’t said much.not with words at least. But his gaze lingered, burned even, every time I laughed too long at someone else’s joke, every time my hand brushed a champagne glass or I tilted my head in conversationHe never touched me, not once, but it felt like he was always watching, always calculating I slipped off my heels and walked barefoot across the plush carpet. My dress lay crumpled on the armchair where I’d tossed it earlier. I stared at it for a long time, it wasn’t just fabric, It was a symbol now of the person I was pretending to be. I crawled under the blanket and pulled it up to my chin, trying to will myself to sleep but the silence kept humming back memories. The way Alessandro had barely said a word on the ride back to the hote

  • The CEO's pawn    CHAPTER 18: The Long Night Begins

Rosalie stood outside the hotel entrance, a cold evening breeze teasing herThe building behind her looming over her, its mirrored walls catching every streetlamp and polished vehicle that passedRome was beginning to hum with night time life cars weaving through cobbled roads, voices rising in a dozen languages, the low hum of church bells marking another hourHer hands held in front of her were still. Still, but not calm. She had told herself she wasn’t waiting for Alessandro She was waiting for the car, that was the line she repeated over and over in her head as if it could untangle the knots in her chest. But she knew better. It wasn’t the vehicle she was nervous aboutIt was the man who would step out of it She adjusted the sleeve of her long black gown, ran her fingers through the soft wave of her hair, and caught her reflection in the glass doors. The woman staring back at her looked expensive. A polished version of the girl who once cried herself to sleep on

  • The CEO's pawn    CHAPTER 17: Rome: Day one

The morning sun poured into Rosalie's room like a slow, golden riverShe hadn’t slept much, Rome had hummed softly outside her window all night, a city alive and ancient, breathing its own rhythmBut her mind had been too busy, spinning.lShe sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the envelope. It was thin, elegant, crisp. Her name printed on it in bold, formal letters. She’d found it the day before, resting on the leather seat of the luxury car like it had been waiting for her all alongAnd for a whole night, she hadn’t opened itRosalie had imagined a dozen things; a handwritten note, a sarcastic message, a romantic gesture that would never come. But when she finally tore it open, it was none of that.Just a schedule."You will be expected to accompany Mr. Moretti to the 9:30am Investment Forum at Palazzo Cavallo. Please wear appropriate attire."Below that were other events: a lunch break, networking hour, return to hotel.Nothing personal, nothing kind, just business. She e
