Chapter 8

Author: Anonymous
I watched Winnie drink her coffee slowly. She struck a completely different image from when she was with Jake.

She put down her cup, and when she looked at me, her gaze was filled with scorn.

“Jake loves me. Divorce him now.”

Even though Winnie had finally revealed her true colors, I did not panic. I just picked up my own cup and took a sip.

“Why are you so certain that I’m the one who doesn’t want a divorce? Jake is the one refusing to sign the papers.”

Winnie was stunned before she glared at me angrily.

“You’re lying! I’m pregnant with his baby! He can’t not marry me! You’re the one sticking around and refusing to get a divorce!”

The next moment, she stared at me and giggled.

“I bet you don’t know this, but unlike what Jake said, I wasn’t pregnant through artificial insemination. I already slept with Jake!”

I had to admit, when I heard this, I froze for exactly one second.

I had thought that Jake only cheated on me emotionally, but to think that he had also cheated on

Perhaps Jake felt guilty, so he gave me a lot of money during the divorce, and I took it all. The money was enough for me to live without worries for a long time, so I started traveling around the world. Whenever I went to a new place, I would send a postcard of the place to my parents and also record my thoughts of the travels on Twitter. As time passed, I amassed quite a number of fans on Twitter. They were impressed by my courage to travel alone. At the same time, through my travels, I felt just how beautiful nature was, and I found the journey I wanted to take throughout my life. By then, the past five years of my married life seemed to have become something that happened a long time ago. When I returned home after traveling around the world, I heard about what had happened to Jake from my parents. After I got my divorce, Winnie seized the chance and demanded Jake to marry her. Jake did not want to and said that he did not love her. He only pitied her because she

  • The Coming of the Quiet Rain   Chapter 1

When Jake came back, I had already booked an appointment for an abortion the next day. I had been married to Jake for five years but never got pregnant. A few days back, I found out that I had been pregnant for two months. I had thought about telling Jake about it during our anniversary as a surprise, but by the looks of it, he no longer needed it. Jake put a bag on the table and came over to hug me. “Honey, I bought some congee for you. Eat it.”I cast a glance at the bits of rice and the barely perceptible flecks of meat inside. How ridiculous. These must be leftovers from a certain someone. I avoided his touch and pushed the bag away. “I don’t have any appetite.”Jake just thought that I was not being honest and poured the congee into a bowl before delivering it to me. “Stop kicking up a fuss, honey. Don’t you love this?”The fishy smell from the cool congee crept into my nose, and I ran into the toilet to hurl. Jake came over to pat my back, but I smacked his han

The next morning, I went to the hospital. After paying for the surgery, I waited for my abortion. I saw Jake supporting Winnie as they came out of the ultrasound scan room. Once they sat down to check the ultrasound scan, Winnie pointed at the report to say something while Jake listened to her seriously. Occasionally, he would record something on his phone. When I saw this, I instinctively touched my belly, and my eyes stung. I did not want to make myself unhappy seeing them, so I prepared to leave, but Jake looked up and saw me. He stood up and frowned as his voice turned sour. “Did you follow me?”Before I could say anything, Winnie tugged his sleeve and said in a troubled voice. “Jake, did Luna misunderstand? I’ll explain it to you. I don’t want this to affect your relationship.”She then stood up to walk toward me. But Jake immediately pushed her down so that she would not move. “You’re pregnant. Sit down. I’ll talk to Luna.”I was not interested in watching them f

Jake froze. Winnie cradled her stomach and cast him a glance before saying something to him. Jake turned his head to look at me. “Luna, you don’t have to lie to me like this. No matter what, I’m not leaving Winnie behind.”They left and never once turned back. At that moment, disappointment filled my heart. A child whose own father did not long for him should not come to this world. Cracks had appeared in our marriage, and it was going to crumble to pieces. When I returned home after my abortion, I found the house still dark. He did not come back for a few days, and I did not call him to ask him where he went either. I just focused on recovering at home while I also called a lawyer to ask about getting a divorce. I saw Jake again from Winnie’s Instagram. He never liked taking photos, but he had gone the extra mile and worn a cartoon hair clip in a pregnancy photo with Winnie. They caressed her belly gently as they stared at each other lovingly. They looked just l

Gertrude looked at me in surprise. When she saw no signs of anger on my face, she relaxed a little. “I’m glad you understand. After all, we can’t let the Green family end like this. Thank goodness Jake is a man who cares about his friends. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to have a grandchild so soon.”As she spoke, Gertrude caressed Winnie’s stomach with joy on her face. I found it all ironic.Cared about his friends, she said. If Henry learned that Jake took care of his wife so much that she was pregnant with his baby, he might be so angry that he would end up crawling out of his grave to kill Jake. When I said nothing, Winnie gave me a fearful look. “Luna, are you still angry at me and Jake? I really just want a baby of my own. I’m just too lonely and scared alone.”As if she had just been bullied, Winnie started sobbing. Quickly, Gertrude grabbed some tissues for her to wipe her tears before glaring at me. “Luna, if you can’t get pregnant, then you have no righ

When I regained consciousness, I saw my mother crying. Once she noticed that I was awake, she quickly wiped her tears away, held my hand, and asked worriedly, “How do you feel, Luna?”I did not cry when I learned that Winnie was pregnant with Jake’s baby, nor did I cry when I felt the life within me slowly fade away as I lay on the cold operating table, but when I saw the sympathy on my mother’s face, I could no longer hold my grief back. I bawled. My mother immediately held me with great pity. As she patted my back, her voice was filled with distress. “I didn’t know that you suffered so much. I’m sorry I was so late. When you get discharged, divorce Jake. You’re not some doormat he can walk all over!”I nodded and cried as hard as I wanted in my mother’s arms. When my father came, I had already composed myself. Even so, he still patted my cheek with sympathy in his eyes. “You’ve gone through a lot, Luna. I really shouldn’t have let you marry Jake.”I held my tears back and

Jake panicked and started anxiously defending himself. “I don’t want a divorce, Luna. I really didn’t know that you were pregnant. Why didn’t you tell me?”What a funny question. It had just been a few days, and Jake seemed to have forgotten the question I asked him that day in the hospital. Honestly, that question was my final chance to Jake and our marriage. But he let me down. In the end, he still chose Winnie without hesitation. “When you were about to leave with Winnie that day in the hospital, I asked you a question, remember?”Jake’s expression first turned to confusion before it changed to pain and disbelief. His voice quivered. “So, you didn’t actually go to the hospital because you were sick, but because you were getting an abortion?”I nodded calmly. “Yes.”And he finally remembered his answer too. He was the one who let both me and our baby slip from his grasp. But he still wanted to fight. “Luna, we can have another baby. Once you get better, let’s ge

Zach no longer had his usual spirit. He had stubble on his face, and he looked haggard. When he saw me, his eyes lit up, and he came forward to me. “Luna, how are you? Are you feeling better?”I gave him a nod but maintained my distance. “I’m much better. If you have no other business with me, I’ll be leaving.”He quickly stopped me and carefully handed me a box. When he opened it, I saw a pair of rings inside. “The rings I had custom-made have arrived.”The rings we used when we got married were ones we designed together. They were really special to us. Hence, we promised each other that we would not take off our rings no matter what happened. But at some point in time, I found that Jake had stopped wearing his ring. When I asked him where his ring was, he said that Winnie felt sad when he saw his ring, because it made her remember Henry, so he took off his ring for the time being. I had been really unhappy at that time and had a loud shouting match with him. I coul
