Chapter 9

Author: Liam Fisher
That night, Felix confessed that he had had a thing for me for years. He never got to tell me because I got married.

Since I was single again, he did not want to miss his shot and told me to think it over.

He even set me up in that fortress of a neighborhood and moved me in, visiting me daily to be my personal chef.

Layla dropped by just as he was whipping up lunch in the kitchen.

Layla grinned playfully and said, "Wow, your new beau is something else. Anyway, I'm here to dish some dirt with you."

"What's up?"

Layla could not hide her glee.

"Who else but your penny-pinching ex-husband, Francis? Just a few days ago, a buddy told me that Francis was in deep with some loan sharks. They've even started calling his place looking for their money.

At work, I could not focus, haunted by the fact that Francis had my address.I knew he was the type to seek revenge and would not just let things slide. If he snapped, he could be a real threat to my safety. That worry led to a mistake in the report I handed in.My supervisor, Felix Hoffman, summoned me to his office and questioned, "What happened here? How could you make such a simple error?"Felix was the CEO's son, and despite his youth, he had a reputation for being tough as nails. Everyone in the office was a little scared of him.I hung my head, owning up to my mistake. "I'm sorry, Mr. Hoffman. That was on me. I'll fix it right now."Felix hummed in acknowledgment and gave a small cough. "I heard you're recently divorced?"I was caught off guard but nodded. "Yes, that's right."He looked at me, his face unreadable. "Well, just make sure your personal life doesn't spill over into work."As evening rolled in, the skies opened up with a downpour. I stared at the weather ap

A month slipped by, and out of the blue, Francis tried to add me again on social media. I left his request hanging, but curiosity got the better of me, so I checked in with a friend about how he was doing. My friend's face said it all. With a heavy sigh, he spilled the beans. "Remember how Francis was all over the trending news? Well, his boss canned him for the bad PR, and there he was, midday, hauling his stuff back home."Can you believe it? He opens the door and there's his new bride, tangled up in bed with another guy! The dude caught in the act was the best man who caused a ruckus with the bridesmaid at the wedding, still wearing his suit."The image made me cringe with secondhand embarrassment, but a part of me thought he got what he deserved. My friend painted the picture."Francis was so mad that he passed out. At the hospital, they found out he had end-stage lung cancer. When he found out the treatment was going to cost 45,000 dollars, his wife bolted with their kid."

A month had passed, and during a shopping spree with Layla, we bumped into Francis and Chloe. He flaunted a low-grade cigarette between his lips, strutting our way with Chloe clinging to his side. The stench of his smoke hit me before he even got close, and I discreetly stepped back, pinching my nose.Francis sneered, "Wow, you've really slimmed down since the divorce. What's the matter? Jealous of me and Chloe's lovey-dovey act? Too bad. No amount of regret will change that Chloe's my number one."Layla and I were at a loss for words, our throats tight with unspoken thoughts.I had shed some pounds, not because of him, but because I was free from playing his maid. I had settled into a healthy routine and hit the gym with Layla. However, he had wasted away even more. His frame was skeletal, and he was racked with a hacking cough as he spoke. It looked like his lung cancer was on the fast track. He mistook my look for one of longing and launched into his monologue."Life's bee

Francis did not waste a second after our divorce. He tied the knot with Chloe faster than I could say "I do".He was all over social media, flaunting his 'bliss'.[Life's a journey, and in the end, the star-crossed lovers make it home.]He posted a picture with Chloe and his son, all smiles. He looked way thinner, cheeks sunken, dark circles for days, but somehow still proud and beaming.I finally saw that little boy clearly for the first time. His face was so puffy that I could not make out his features. Some folks tried to be nice and dropped him a congratulatory comment. He shot back with several comments.[My boy's already two. Thanks for the love, everyone.][Big shoutout to my wife Chloe for giving me a son.][Unlike someone who's more like a hen that won't lay eggs, just squatting in the coop.]He went and blabbed about my private matters of all things.'I'm usually chill and not one to pick fights, but that doesn't mean he gets to throw shade.' I thought.I clapped

  • The Cost of Love   Chapter 4

The day I found out the forty-five thousand dollars had mysteriously disappeared from my bank account, I was at the hospital collecting Francis's medical test results. The doctor had found something in his lungs, possibly cancer, and said treatment would cost at least 45,000 dollars.I had not even broken the news to him before he gave all that money to his lover and rushed to divorce me.Well, good riddance. Our marriage was done for.I did not sign up to nurse a cancer patient.A week later, I dragged him to court. He had cheated during our marriage, and the proof was undeniable and rock-solid.I invited a bunch of our friends to the trial, and a lot of them showed up, eager for the drama.Francis sat there in the defendant's chair, his face as gloomy as burnt toast. Chloe and their two-year-old kid looked like they were about to cry.Pitiful, sure, but why did I have to care? The judge did not surprise anyone by granting the divorce and leaving Francis with nothing. All t
