Days after returning to Kris's mansion, I still couldn't forget about the young woman who was maltreated by her aunt but there was nothing I could do. I was only here to celebrate with my long-time friend.
Finally Kris's actual birth date arrived and the atmosphere was electric . Although we had been partying for a few days, this day was the wildest of them all. There was a lost of fearing, drinking and dancing. Kris was happy and I was happy for him too but I just couldn't stop thinking about Lila. But why? I couldn't explain. She just took over my mind since that day. Eventually, the party came to an end. I retired to bed early because I needed to return to the Moonstone back the following day. I was get dressed when I heard knock on the door. I answered and the door was pushed open. “You're getting ready to leave already?” Kris said. “Yeah. I have to get back to my duty. You know, a pack without a leader is as good as dead,” I answered. Kris chuckled in response. “You're right. Anyways, thank you so much for coming down here to celebrate with me. I really appreciate it and that is why, I won't let you leave empty-handed. So, ask me for anything and I'll grant your request,” he said. I looked at him to see if he was joking but he had a dead serious look on his face. “You're serious?” I asked and he nodded. I racked my brain but nothing came to my mind to ask for. “I don't think there's… oh wait, I think I have one,” I said. “Ask away,” Kris urged. “I know you have a lot of valuable things to offer but I don't want any of them. What I'd truly want is to take one of your pack members back to my pack to serve there as a maid,” I replied. Kris looked at me like I had just grown another pair of head but didn't say anything. “O…kay. I can just ask one of them to go with you as you return to your pack,” he finally said. “Actually, I have someone in mind,” I said. Then I further went on to explain what Lila looked like but the look on his face wasn't pleasant at all. “But why would you want Lila. You know she's wolfless, right?” he replied. “She is?” I asked, trying to process this new information. “She is and it's probably why her family sees her as an outcast,” Kris replied. “But why don't you do anything about it?” I asked. “I can't interfere since it's their family issue. Anyways, I can give you someone else if you really need a maid, which I find very surprising,” Kris said. I was quiet for a moment. Was this really what I wanted? I asked myself. I don't even know this woman. Why am I doing this? I thought. “No, it's Lila I want,” I said finally. Then Kris looked at me suspiciously. “Are you sure this is about making her a maid in your pack or do you have other intentions?” “You should know me better than that, Kris. I'd never stoop so low to get myself involved with an outcast, a wolfless. I just want to take her out of this maltreatment she's facing. That's all,” I said. I couldn't believe Kris would think that. “Fine, I'll grant your request. Excuse me for a minute while I make preparations to have her ride with you back home,” Kris said. And with that, he turned around and walked out of the room. In no time, I was fine getting ready and I stepped out of the room and made my way to the front of the house where my car was waiting for me. But Kris and someone else was standing beside my car. It was the lady from the other day - Lila. “Just like I promised, I have brought you your request. Now she'll go back with you to Moonstone Pack,” Kris said to me. Then turning to face Lila, he said, “This is your new master. Respect him and do whatever he tells you.” Lila simply nodded and then looking at me, she lowered and head and said, “Hello, Alpha.” “You're Lila, right?” I asked, despite knowing the answer. “Yes Alpha,” she replied, her head still bent. “Good. Just like my friend said, I'm your new master and I'll be taking you back with me to my pack. I will let you know whatever you need to know when we get there. Is that taken?” I said with a firm tone. “Yes master,” she said. Then turning to my friend, I thanked him for his hospitality and he promised to pay me a visit at Moonstone Pack. After all the farewells and goodbyes, Lila and I got into the car. The long ride home was quiet as neither of us said a word. But the time we got to Moonstone Pack, it was dark. “Give her a place to spend the night,” I said to Beta Drake before heading to my room. I had just finished dressing up after taking a bath when I heard the door open. “Who is that woman?” Beta Drake asked me “That's how you greet your brother and the Alpha of your pack whom you haven't seen in a couple of days?” I said, trying to sound playful. “I'm sorry, welcome back brother. But tell me who that woman is?” he asked. Before I could respond, he added, “Is she your mate?” “She could never be. She's just some orphan I rescued. She'd be working for us now,” I replied, before sipping a glass of my wine. His face looked a little relieved by my response. We spoke about what happened while I was away and I was happy and proud that he was able to control and manage things. “I'm proud of you,” I said before he left the room. After he left, I decided to retire to bed. That night, I slept very peacefully without a single night. Little did I know that a greater trouble was bound to happen.I searched everywhere. Every town, every market, every rogue-infested border. Nothing. She was gone. And every damn night, I would find myself out there—barefoot, shirtless, drunk on regret—staring at the moon, whispering like a lunatic.“Please,” I’d beg, my knees in the dirt, my hands raised like a madman. “Moon goddess, I know I don’t deserve her. I know I’ve failed her. But please, just let me find her again. Let me tell her I love her. Let me… let me make things right.”Sometimes I’d talk to the spirit of Ravenna, the very witch I killed.“I was young… I didn’t know,” I’d mutter under my breath like a man possessed. “You were never the threat. It was the sickness, the fear. I thought I was protecting my people… I didn't mean to hurt you. Please, if your soul is out there, let her come back to me. Or at least let me find her.”No answer. Not even the wind bothered to whisper back. For a year, I didn’t sleep right. I barely ate. The pack thought I was losing my mind. Maybe I was.L
I didn’t stop running that night, not when the moon turned red. Not when my lungs started to burn. Not even when I felt like my heart was about to shatter into tiny, useless pieces.Kaidon had helped me escape. He told me not to come back.He said he’d find me.But he didn’t.Not for three whole days.By the time I collapsed in the mountains, I was already half dead. I don’t even remember falling. All I remember was the biting wind and the sound of my own sobbing echoing through the trees. Then nothing. When I opened my eyes again, it wasn’t the cold I felt anymore; it was warmth. Warm sheets. A fire crackling nearby. A cup of something that smelled like ginger by the bedside. I blinked a few times before my vision cleared.“Ah, finally awake,” a soft voice said.It was a woman. Mid-forties, maybe. Her grey-streaked hair was braided down her back. She had these kind eyes that reminded me of... well, of how I wished a mother would look.“You were out cold when my husband found you,” sh
It was past midnight when Elder Loin came knocking at my door. I knew it had to be something serious. The old man never left his quarters at that hour unless the walls were falling.I sat up from my desk and stared at him. “You couldn’t sleep either?” I asked with a tired chuckle. He didn’t return the smile.Instead, he stepped in and closed the door behind him. “We need to talk, Alpha. Privately.”That made my heart sink.“Sit,” I said, pointing at the seat across from me.But he remained standing. “Drake. He’s pushing for Lila’s execution.”My chest tightened.“What?” I whispered, blinking as if I’d misheard.“Drake went to the other elders,” he continued. “Told them she’s a threat. He reminded them that she’s the girl from the prophecy; that the curse is already playing out and you’re blinded by your feelings. He convinced them. They voted for her execution.”I stood from my seat immediately, fists clenched at my sides.“When?” I asked.“Three nights from now. They want to do it du
At first, I thought I was imagining it. The way my limbs would suddenly feel… weightless, like I could carry a boulder or sprint faster than the wind. It started the day Kaidon kissed me, and since then, every time he touched me, even if it was just his hand brushing against mine, I felt something inside me shift, like a flame catching fire in a dark room… like strength I never had before.“Kaidon,” I had asked him one evening as we sat under the moonlit sky, his arms wrapped around me from behind, “why do I feel... stronger whenever I’m around you?”He chuckled and kissed the top of my head. “Love,” he said. “Love makes people brave. Love makes people stronger.”I remember wanting to believe him. I did. But it wasn’t just strength. It was something else… something darker. It started as a whisper in my head…Hurt him.I’d flinch every time it came, like someone had poured ice water down my spine. The first time it happened, I was in the kitchen, preparing his favorite tea. I was hummi
The council hall was thick with the scent of incense and authority. Every elder, every warrior leader, every man who swore loyalty to the Moonstone Pack, sat in the curved circle of chairs. I stood at the center of it all. This was going to be a meeting like no other!I was going to tell them!“Gentlemen,” I began, letting my voice echo across the room like the wind before a storm. “Thank you for coming.”“Alpha,” Elder Marcus said, giving a short nod. “Is it something urgent?”I folded my arms. “A few things, actually. We need to talk about security. Patrol shifts, border strength… and something else.”“Border strength?” Elder Joseph leaned forward. “We haven’t had a rogue breach in a long time. Our borders are secure.”“I know,” I replied. “But there’s been too much internal drama lately. People turning against one another. Lies, sabotage, even attempted murder. It weakens us. Once our enemies find out that we're not united, they will strike. We can't wait for them to do that before
Something had come up earlier that day.Something I wasn’t proud of.Another nightmare… the same one that haunted my sleep for months now. The same faceless wolf chasing me across a field of fire and ash, until I fell… and she stared down at me with those hollow, haunting eyes, then turned and vanished into the mist. Every time I woke up, gasping for breath, soaked in sweat, like death had brushed past me. But this time... it felt stronger. Realer. Like the wolf was trying to show me something. Warn me.So I canceled dinner with Lila.I told her it was a meeting with the council. She didn’t question it, even though I saw the flash of disappointment in her eyes before she masked it with a soft smile and nodded.“Okay, Alpha,” she had said quietly. “Maybe another time.”I wanted to reach out, to tell her the truth. But how could I? How do you tell the woman who smiles when you walk into a room, who holds your hand like it's worth something… that you’re cursed to die at her hands? No. Th
