Meanwhile, as Travis was in the kitchen, he heard Caly yell and he decided to go and see if she was ok. “Be back in a sec, Eli,” he said. Travis walked into the hallway and he saw her stomping down the hallway, muttering to herself, unaware of him watching her. He watched her for another minute, she looked really pretty in her light blue dress, and kinda cute all angry and stuff. Her auburn hair was pulled back out of her face, with a braided crown wrapped around the top of her head, she had tiny wisps of hair falling gently out of the braid, and smaller braids hanging down into her hair that wasn’t pinned up. Wow, she looks really pretty and grown up today. “Hey Caly, you, ok?” Travis asked just outside the kitchen.
“Oh, um, hi, Travis, I’m, uhh fine” --she stuttered both nervously and excitedly-- “It’s just Garrett and his stupid friend Ryker keep calling me a cub. I’m not, you know, today is my birthday, and I turn twelve.” “Yeah, I know, Cal, who do you think this big ole party is for, huh?” he teased her. “I wonder!” she laughed, and he joined in with her. As they were laughing, he kept getting distracted by how pretty she looked while they were talking. Suddenly he stopped laughing and continued to look down at her. She looked up to him and saw that he had a strange look upon his face. Wow, she is so beautiful, he thought. The way she is laughing, with the sunlight streaming through the window highlighting the red and blonde strands in her hair and accentuating and reflecting in her baby blue eyes. Wow. Just Wow. I’ve never felt this way before. “Rocky, could she be my mate?” he silently asked his wolf. “Is she the one?”“I’m not sure,” Rocky responded. “She is very beautiful, and there is no denying some sort of connection, but I can’t be sure.”“Eli will not be happy about this, she’s his little sister.”“That she is Travis, so, if she is your mate, it will be a delicate situation to address.”“I know.” Caly began to worry, awkwardly looked down at her feet. “Did I say something wrong? Is there something on my face or in my hair?” She reached up and touched her hair nervously. “Rae! Help! What’s wrong?” “Nothing. I think he likes you.”“Really? You think so? Please don’t play with my emotions right now.”“Yep, I surely do. There is definitely something about him that I like.”“Me too!” “Umm, is everything ok Travis?” came Caly’s quiet and unsure voice through the haze. He looked down at her and she was staring at her shoe, shuffling her feet. She very carefully and nervously looked up at him with uncertainty and questions in her eyes. He wanted to grab her and hug her, maybe even kiss her cheek to take away all that uncertainty. “Umm, yeah, I’m uh, fine Caly, I just...um…. you just….uhh,”--he stuttered, then quickly added,-- “you look really pretty in that dress.” Then he ran off towards the kitchen embarrassed. As he rushed into the kitchen, Eli was still at the breakfast nook helping Ardie eat. He ran to the door, “Uhhh, I gotta go Eli, I forgot, I...um… forgot to do something for my mom. I’ll see you tonight, maybe. Give Caly my gift for her on the table please, thanks.” “Yeah, sure, but….” Eli responded, at a loss, but Travis was already out the door. “Wait…. what….?” Caly thought as Travis ran off towards the kitchen. “Rae! Did he just say I was pretty?” Caly could feel Rae’s approval. “Yes, I believe he did.” “Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, what do I do?” “Go after him, silly!” “Right, ok!” She raced off to follow him, “Travis, hey Travis, wait.” She rushed into the kitchen and saw only Ardie and Eli looking confused. As soon as Ardie saw Caly, he toddled over to her, “Cal, Cal, Cal! Up, up, up!” he yelled excitedly. She picked up her two-year-old brother and gave him a big hug, then she blew raspberries on his neck, and he giggled loudly. After he quieted down, she put him down and asked Eli, “Where’s Travis?” “All of a sudden he ran out of here in a huge hurry and he said he forgot to do something for his mom.” “Oh,” Caly said sadly. “What in the world is going on with you two?” he exclaimed. “First, Travis runs out of the house like a maniac, and tells me to give you his present. Then you run in here like a maniac too, asking about him and where he is. What the heck is going on?” “Wait, he said he had a present for me? Well, where is it?” “Over there on the table,” he pointed and looked at her as if she had grown a second head. Caly rushed over to the table and saw a beautifully hand-carved wooden jewelry box detailed with a large rose in the middle of the lid and four tiny roses along the corners, connected by thorns, vines, and leaves. She gently opened the lid and inside was a single yellow rose, a beautiful corsage with roses and baby’s breath pinned in it, and a handwritten note. The note read,Here’s a single rose for the prettiest girl I know, and a corsage I hope you will wear at the party tonight when we have our first dance. Happy Birthday Calypso, I hope you enjoy the jewelry box. Use it to keep all your things in, that are just as beautiful as you!
-TravisCaly’s heart skipped a beat, she read, and re-read the note three times to make sure she didn’t miss anything. “He really does like me, Rae! I can’t believe this! Travis Barnes likes me like I like him!” she screamed ecstatically in her head. “I can’t wait to see him tonight; I might even have my first kiss too! This is the best birthday ever!
“Okay, okay, slow down Caly, don’t get ahead of yourself. You don’t need to be thinking about kisses right now.” Rae chided. “I can’t help it Rae, I am over the moon happy!”“Hello old friend,” said a deep raspy voice in his head. He tried to ignore it, and continued walking, glancing back at Calypso as she was shivering, he stopped.“Here, take my jacket.” He began to remove it.“B..b..but then you’ll get all wet and cold,” she said declining the offer.“I’m already wet as is, maybe it’ll bring you some warmth, since clearly you are freezing,” he said exasperated.“I’m….” she started but was cut off as he took it off and tossed it to her, and she quickly caught it.“Just take it for once in your life, without complaint,” he turned around and didn’t give her a chance to even answer or respond. She took the coat only because she was cold, she told herself, but as she put it on his scent was all over it, it was the smell of cedarwood, which reminded her of home, and aftershave with a hint of mint, and something else familiar, but she wasn’t quite sure what. She inhaled deeply, and his scent enveloped her, warming her inside. She looked down at herself and h
Why does it bother me that he doesn’t believe me? She thought angrily.“Because you like him,” Rae perked up.“Whatever, I do not!”“Uh huh,” Rae laughed. “As far as him not believing you, can you blame him? You do tend to run off…”“Oh, my goodness, I have only run off once with him around,” she said exasperated.“Twice, remember, you ran away from him when he was trying to catch up to you, just a little while ago.”“Well, I had a good reason then, I was scared.”“True, but you can’t blame the man for not trusting you at your word, you have proven to him that you aren’t always completely honest,” Rae said pointedly. “Yes, I promise,” Calypso said looking him in the eyes, trying to express that she was being truthful. He nodded his head once as if he agreed to trust her word, then released Daisy’s reigns and he proceeded to cross the river, looking back once to make sure she was following him, satisfied that she was.Caly and Daisy crossed the river at a shallow spot and headed up the
“No,” she grabbed the reigns halting their movement, “Lightening is probably scared and could be hurt.”“He’s a smart, strong horse, he has probably already found shelter and is waiting out the storm like we should be doing. Besides if he is hurt, there is nothing we can do for him, and we will find out when the sun comes up.”“I’m not gonna leave him out here in the storm if he is hurt!” she replied angrily, as she felt tears well up in her eyes, and tried to hold them back, thinking about Buttercup.“Why do you gotta be so damn stubborn? Don’t be stupid!” he yelled at her as his horse sidestepped, not knowing who was in control.“Stupid?!” she yelled pissed off, “I’m not stupid! I’m just worried about Lightening!” she yanked the reigns from his hands harshly and tried to turn the horse as he clasped her hands and the reigns preventing her from giving commands to the horse.“And I told you he would be fine!” Xander hollered at her.“You don’t know that!” she said petulantly, crossing
The rain was coming down much harder now, it stung Caly’s face as she raced south towards Blackthorn territory. All she could think about was Lightening and hoping he wasn’t hurt. She didn’t want another Buttercup situation to happen like it did when she was 10. She tried not to think about the fact that she would soon be crossing into Blackthorn territory, and the fact that if she got caught, Jebidiah Blackthorn or his men at arms would probably kill her if they found her. There is no way they would be out in this storm anyways, that would just be dumb, she tried to convince herself.“Are you sure about this?” Rae questioned in her mind.“Nope, not at all! Lightening is already spooked, the poor thing must be frightened, and when that happens, they have a tendency to hurt themselves, just like Buttercup did. I don’t want what happened to her to happen to Lightning.” Caly said.“I get it, but are you sure you want to cross into Blackthorn territory? You know what will happen if you ge
The whole ride back to Everwood’s was scattered with rain, by the time Xander reached the barn he was soaked through. His black shirt and jeans were plastered to his body clinging to him like a very uncomfortable second skin. He reached the barn and saddled up a pretty mare named Gia, grabbed a rain slicker off the hook, mounted up, and headed towards the pasture to bring the horses in. As he reached the middle of the pasture, he saw three horses huddled together. He noticed two other riders surrounding them and readying their ropes to lasso the horses. He watched as they released their ropes, catching two of the horses. The third, a white mare, broke off to the right spooked when a loud clap of thunder boomed overhead. He watched the two riders calm the horses, then one handed off their rope to the other so they could tie off both horses to one saddle. The rider who handed off the rope was short in stature and slim, but he couldn’t tell who either of them were from the distance with
It couldn’t have been more than a few hours when Caly was awoken by the sound of loud knocking on her door. “Caly? Are you awake?” came Eli’s voice on the other side of the door.“No, go away!” Caly said grouchily, “I’m sleeping!”“I’m sorry! But I need your help,” Eli said urgently. Caly jumped out of bed, “Why, what’s wrong?” she opened the door concerned thinking the worst.“Well,” he started quickly, “Lightening got spooked by the thunder and broke out of the corral, Mr. Tate was checking up on him due to the storm. He told me to go get Xander and Cody as he raced off. Cody was just pulling up when I let him know and he followed behind Mr. Tate. I went to get Xander but there was no sign of him, as I went by the pastures the rest of the horses were still out and grazing. Anyways, everybody else is too drunk from the party to help, so, I need your help to bring the rest of the horses in before they bolt as well from the storm, it’s getting bad out there.” He let out an exasperated
