Damon

“I’m proud of you, Damon,” Sophie said as she served me dinner.

I flashed her a smile. I was thinking. Was it right? To reject my mate? I was having second thoughts about this. What if I had made a mistake?

The aroma of the food flushed into my lungs and I forgot about it in a split second. It didn’t matter much to me anymore. What was done had been done.

There was a knock on the door which caught my attention. That had to be my mother. She was late. This was the first time in a while this had happened. What could have kept her out for this long?

“I’ll get the door,” Sophie said, rising from the table.

I sat down and let my eyes back on my plate. We were having chicken casserole for dinner, but I wasn’t moved by it. My appetite had been drowned by my thoughts. Surely there would be consequences for what I had done, but I was ready for it. As long as I got to spend it with Sophie, I would endure anything.

“What are you doing here?” I heard my mother say from the living room.

I sighed and rose from the table. My mother wasn’t a fan of Sophie. This came after she found out that we weren’t mates. She told me that there was no point in being together if we weren’t mates. To her, it was a taboo.

“Where is Anna?” She asked as I entered the room.

Her eyes came to me immediately. Mother was standing by the door, and Sophie was facing her timidly. She knew that her mother didn’t like her. She had done everything to please her, but Mother wouldn’t listen.

“I sent her away,” I replied.

Mother’s eyes were now filled with rage. She was furious. She stepped into the room and walked towards me.

“What do you mean by that?” She asked.

I shrugged my shoulders nonchalantly.

“I sent her away, mother. There’s no way that I’m taking someone like her as my mate,” I replied. “She is a slave and nothing more.”

Mother furrowed her brows at me. They slanted and I feared that they would peel off her face if she kept that gaze for long.

“You rejected your mate? How could you?” She demanded.

I sighed and rolled my eyes.

“Relax Mom. It isn’t much of a deal as you’re making it.”

My mother looked dumbfounded by my words.

“Do you know what you’re saying, Damon?” She asked. “Do you know the consequences of rejecting a mate?”

I was silent. My eyes went to Sophie who was still standing by the door. She was looking sad and dejected. I felt my stomach churn. The night’s breeze filled the room and also the sounds of the crickets grew louder.

My eyes came back to my mother who didn’t let go of her angry gaze.

“Mother. I love Sophie, and I want to spend the rest of my life with her,” I said.

“You can’t. Sophie isn’t your mate. She is the daughter of your father’s Beta, it is an abomination to marry her!” Mother yelled at the top of her voice.

“And Anna is the daughter of the Alpha I killed,” I pointed out.

“She has that Alpha blood, that is why she is your mate, Damon.”

I sighed and stared at the ground.

“Noami, give the kid a break. He can do whatever he wants,” a male voice said.

My eyes widened as I recognized that voice. There was no way that I would miss it. That was….My father.

My eyes went up and I saw him standing by the door. He had gray hair mixed with his jet-black hair. He was dressed in a black top like mine with blue pants. I couldn’t believe it. My father was home. How many years had it been?

“Father!” I said almost shrieking.

My father chuckled and walked into the house. He still had the aura that made everybody in the room chill. I could never forget how intimidating that was when I was little.

“Damon, my boy,” he said, patting me on my shoulder.

“I see you’ve grown into a fine man,” he said.

After handing over the title of Alpha to me, Father decided to leave the pack and focus on his life. He wanted to relive the years he had lost being Alpha. And that was quite a lot. I was surprised that my mother never left him. But now he was back. Was that why Mother had come home late? Had she gone out looking for him?

“Richard. You shouldn’t support this. It’s wrong,” Mother said from across the room.

My father smiled and walked towards her.

“He is Alpha, Noami. Nobody can question his decision, not even you.”

That was all I needed to hear. That was why I missed him so much. He always supported me. Maybe it was because I was the heir to his legacy. The legacy I had spent well. It had been almost a decade since I last saw him, but he hadn’t changed that much. He was still the same man I knew.

Mother told me that he had gone to explore the world. He had moved to the city with the humans and tried to understand them the best way he could. I couldn’t wait to hear the stories he had for us.

My mother sighed and placed her hand on her forehead.

“You guys are unbelievable.”

And with that, she disappeared upstairs. I wasn’t pleased that my mother was appalled with my decision. But I had to do it. Sophie was the only person I wanted.

My father held my shoulder and I could feel how metallic his grasp was. Even after all these years, he still had it. His silver eyes crinkled as he smiled.

“It’s your decision, son,” he said. “Only you can stop you.”

I nodded at that. My eyes went to Sophie who had watched my family drama. This was the first time she had been here to see it. There wasn't always much because my mother usually listened to me. But tonight was different. She was adamant about me being with Anna.

I walked up to Sophie and grabbed her hands. She looked up at me with starry eyes.

“I love you, Sophie. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” I said.

Her cheeks heated up.

“I love you too, Damon. And I want to be with you always,” she said.

I smiled.

My next words left her shocked.

“Then marry me, Sophie.”

RohanFive years ago. I was running as fast as I could. But it seemed I was so slow. The pack house was under attack. The last line of defence had been broken. I knew that Jarred wouldn’t call me unless it was an emergency, and this was sooner than I hoped it would be. How long had we been at it? An hour? Maybe two or three? I couldn’t tell. All I needed to do was make it to the pack house. And I hoped that I wouldn’t be too late. Late. That was all I’ve been tonight. First, it was alerting the pack about the attack, and then it was Walton. My heart ached as I thought about him. How could I have been so stupid? The only reason he was dead was that I’d forced him to go after the vampires. I’d taken the fear from him and that had led to his death. This was all my fault. He’d died a painful death, and I feared that I wouldn’t be able to recover from it. As I got back into the pack, I could see the path being littered with vampires. They’d done a good job holding them back. The road

DamonThey were coming. But we were prepared. I could see them now—the vicious creatures coming at top speed, their screeching sounds filling the air. My hand tightened around the handle of the silver blade. This was going to be one hell of a fight. All around us, the people of the Black Fang roared in preparation. They were all ready for this. Everybody was ready except for one person—Rohan. It was amusing that he was about to chicken out on us. And he was the only person who had experience fighting vampires in large numbers like this. But now that we needed him the most, he was just a shell of himself. “On my word, we attack!” Dayton yelled at everybody. I gritted my teeth and tightened my grip on the blade again. I could feel my blood boiling. I was thirsty for a battle like this. A few months ago, I never knew that vampires were real. I’d lived my life totally oblivious to their existence. Until that morning at the cafe with my father. He’s opened my eyes to the reality of the

Anna“Good to see you back on your feet,” Rebekah said as she stood by the door. I was almost startled by that because nobody had seen her come in. It was evening, and Stella had fully recovered. It was time to go back home and get some rest. And nobody deserved it better than her.Stella chuckled as she rose from the bed. I was helping her, making sure that she was able to work. She’d been in bed all day which meant that her first few steps would be rocky. “Thank you, Rebekah,” she said softly. “I wouldn’t have been here without you.”Rebekah folded her arms as she leaned against the doorframe. “You seem to forget that’s my job, Stella.”Stella nodded with a smile on her face. “Yeah. It’s one hell of a job.”Stella moved, her hands slowly leaving the bed. Her legs touched the ground and she leaned off the bed gently. I watched her tentatively with her hand wrapped around my shoulder. Stella took a deep breath before standing on her feet. She chuckled in amazement and looked up at

RohanFive years ago. The air was tense, filled with the clink of swords, the metallic tang of blood, and the screams of my men as they clashed against the vampires. There was a fog that concealed half of the battlefield. It was our job to hold down the line. They must not get through. Not by any means.A vampire lunged at me faster than I could process. It brought me down to the ground and snapped its fangs at me. I moved my head away before it could take it off. And then I reached for my blade at my side and grabbed, swinging it at the vampire. Its head slid off and it dropped dead to my side. I got back to my feet immediately, making sure that it didn't repeat itself. I was Alpha. It was my job to protect this pack. And the only way I could do that was to protect myself. I couldn’t die on my people when they needed me most. “Alpha!” I heard a familiar voice scream through the field. I stared in the direction that the scream came from and it was the dirt blonde boy from earlier b

RohanPresent day. “Rohan! Rohan!” I could hear Damon’s voice calling me from the fog. I snapped back to reality and found him staring at me with his brows furrowed. “What the hell are you doing? Blacking out at an important time?” He asked, barely hiding the irritation in his voice. I sighed and rubbed my forehead. The memories were coming back faster, and I didn’t want to remember them. But if this was what was happening, then I had to make sure that I did better than last time. At the distance, Dayton was talking down the vampire while the whole pack watched. He tore off its neck from the body before smashing it to pieces with his foot. That was grotesque. But I could see the rage in his eyes. He was fuming at the vampires which meant that he could handle the rest here. “Are there any more?” He asked the crowd that was gathered but nobody responded. He walked up to us afterwards, his hands stained with blood. “What do we do now?” He asked. “You have to prepare your pack fo

RohanFive years ago. “Alpha! Thank goodness,” Eric said as I stepped out of the truck. It was twilight and I could smell the tension in the air. We were running out of time. They would soon be here. I could feel it—the strange shift in the air. We didn’t have much long left now. “What’s going on?” I asked and looked around. The men were gathered but they all looked scared. This pissed me off. “Why are you all looking like you’ve seen a ghost?”There was no answer. They all stared at me in silence, scared out of their minds. This irked me. At this rate, we wouldn’t be able to hold them back for long. “Well? Someone better answer me!” I demanded. “W—We didn’t know that vampires were real,” one of the men said. He was a boy of about nineteen with short dirt blonde hair. His blue eyes were lit in fright and his knees trembled as he held onto his blade. I bit my lips staring at him. He would be the first to die. “Well. Now you know that they are,” I said. “Now stop acting like wimps
