로그인Paige's POV
Without waiting for Leah, who was probably somewhere in the arena shamelessly chasing after Enzo, I took my taxi back to the apartment. The fare flashed on my screen, I sighed heavily. There went another chunk of my allowance. I tap Confirm anyway, after everything today, I wasn’t about to squeeze myself into a bus with half the students who had just witnessed my public humiliation. As the taxi pulled away from campus, I rested my forehead against the window. I really needed another job. Leah’s dad was already doing more than enough. He paid our tuition and transferred us both a monthly allowance without fail. It was generous, more generous than I deserved, and the last thing I wanted was to ask for more because I couldn’t manage my money. Before exams, I’d been working evening shifts as a waitress at a sports bar. The pay wasn’t amazing, but it covered the little things—cab fares, coffee, textbooks, the occasional late-night cravings. I’d quit to focus on finals. Maybe it was time to start looking again. The second I stepped into the apartment, I kicked off my sneakers, tossed my bag onto the floor, and collapsed face-first onto my bed, like a log of wood. I was knackered. Classes. The hockey game. Running into Mike, that two faced bastard I blindly fell in love with and of course, the last person I wanted defending me had to step in to defend me again… My groan was muffled by the pillow. Knox. Knox was insufferable, but the way he’d stepped in protectively between me and Mike as if marking me as…… The way he had kissed….. “Enough Paige! Stop thinking about him!” I screamed into my pillow. He was still the same annoying jerk who’d spent most of my childhood inventing new ways to get under my skin. The same idiot who used to hide my backpack. Who’d stolen my lunch money once and spent it on ice cream. The same person who disliked me been friends with his sister. My lips twitched. I frowned harder. Why was I smiling? I wasn’t smiling. I refused to smile because of Knox Donovan. Especially not after the stunt he’d pulled outside the arena. Condescending jerk. I buried my face back into the pillow. “He's still a bully,” I muttered. Still insufferable. I let out a sigh and closed my eyes. Sleep took me almost instantly. A pillow hit me square in the face. I groaned. “If the apartment isn’t on fire, I’m sleeping.” “Oh, it’s not.” Leah’s voice carried way too much excitement for someone who’d just assaulted me with a pillow. I cracked an eye open. She stood in my doorway with a grin that could only mean trouble. “What?” “You left.” “I know.” “You didn’t even wait for me.” I hugged my pillow tighter. “I was in a hurry. I had notes to catch up on.” Leah folded her hands under her chest, looking at my face intently. From the looks she was giving me, she didn't believe me at all. “Please.” she rolled her eyes. “What?” “You were avoiding Knox.” “I was not.” I replied with a shrug on my shoulders. “Paige, you practically sprinted out of that arena.” “I had things to do, I don’t know why you’re making this into a thing.” I said sitting up on my bed. “Because it is a thing.” “It isn’t.” She sighed dramatically “Why can’t you two just get along?” I stared at her like she had two heads. “Get along? Your brother made my childhood miserable.” “Oh, come on.” “Huh? He hid my backpack, he stole my lunch money, practically always bullied me.” “He bought you ice cream with it.” Leah scoffed. “My own lunch money!” I exclaimed Leah shrugged. “He still shared.” I threw my pillow at her. “You’re unbelievable.” She laughed, falling on the bed in resignation “I’m just saying… he’s different now.” she said, her eyes fixated on the ceiling. “I noticed.” “You did?” “He became taller.” Leah burst into laughter. “I was talking about his personality.” “I wasn’t.” She shook her head, still smiling. “You are impossible.” “So is your brother.” For a second, neither of us spoke. Then Leah suddenly gasped. “Oh!” She sat upright so fast I nearly got hit in the face. “What now? Did Enzo finally realize you’re the love of his life?” She gasped.“No, but……He smiled. I blinked “At you?” “Hmmm…In my direction.” I couldn’t stop the laugh that escaped me. “Oh my God.” “I’m serious!” “He was probably smiling because his team won.” “He looked at me.” I laughed harder. “You are actually delusional.” She picked up my stuffed teddy bear and threw it at me. “You’re a terrible best friend” she said, dropping back to the bed “But you really should’ve stayed. The second you left, every girl in that arena surrounded me.” I frowned. “What?” “They wanted Knox’s number.” She held up a finger. “Or his I*******m.” Another finger “And they wanted to know if he was single. Can you believe one girl actually asked me if I could set them up?” I laughed. “So, did you?” “Absolutely not, I'm not going to be dragged into the mess that's my brother's love life” I laughed softly “You are so dramatic” “I'm serious. And for the record…” She pointed a finger at me. “None of my friends are allowed to date my brother either.” I barked out a laugh. “Trust me, that’s one rule I’ll never break.” A flicker of guilt twisted in my stomach. That stupid kiss flashed through my mind. It was a mistake. “Good.” “I’d rather fail all my classes.” A mistake that was never going to happen again. “See? This is why we’re best friends.” She bumped my shoulder. “Oh, and before I forget…” she said standing up She was already halfway to the door. “The team is throwing a party tonight.” “…Okay?” “We’re going.” I frowned. “Leah—” “Don’t start.” She pointed a warning finger at me. “I’ve already picked your outfit, and you can't avoid Mike forever.” She grinned. “See you in 30minutes, Paige.”Paige’s POVIt was a two-hundred-dollar bill, with a note underneath saying, ‘don't spend it wisely.’I stood there a moment, the money heavy in my hands, chest tangled with a mess of confusion.“Whoa.” Lisa leaned over my shoulder, eyes going wide. “That’s a huge tip. On your first day?” She whistled low. “Guess being rude to hockey players pays off.”“I can’t keep this.” I turned the napkin over, like the other side might explain something the first hadn’t. It didn’t. “Are you kidding? Paige, you have to take it.” She said it like it was obvious, like I was the one being unreasonable. “That’s Knox Tatum. This is probably nothing to him.”I almost laughed.I folded the bill and shoved it into my apron pocket, my face going red with the mixture of shame and embarrassment. What did he see me as? A charity case? There was no question in mind. I was giving it back to him. ……….By the time I got home, the apartment was dim, blinds still drawn from the night before. Leah was curled up
Paige's POVMy heart skips several beats at once. Knox walked in, gym bag slung over one shoulder, hair still damp, gray T-shirt clinging in a way that should’ve been illegal. Enzo trailed in behind him, laughing at something on his phone, both of them looking like they’d come straight from the gym. Before either of them looked my way, I ducked my head and busied myself wiping down an already spotless table.Had he seen me?I risked a glance up. Knox was scanning the diner, but his eyes skated right over the counter without stopping. He said something to Enzo, gestured toward a booth by the window, and the two of them dropped into it like they came here all the time. Was he following me? Why did he keep showing up everywhere I went?Okay. Maybe he hadn’t seen me. Relief settled in my chest as I turned toward the counter. “Midget.”I froze. So much for lucky.I took a deep breath and turned slowly, cloth still in hand, and found Knox watching me from the booth by the window, one arm
Paige’s POV Without waiting for Leah to wake up, I quietly got ready for class. She’d passed out the second we’d gotten home last night, still mumbling something about Enzo in her sleep. By the time she opened her eyes, she’d have one hell of a hangover. I made a quick pot of hangover soup anyway, poured it into a bowl, and covered it with a plate. ‘Heat before eating. Drink water. And no more vodka. —P’ I left the note on the kitchen counter beside it. I tugged on a fitted black Henley, slipped into my skinny jeans and sneakers, grabbed my bag, and headed out. The campus was already buzzing by the time I crossed the courtyard. Students were already rushing between lectures, coffee cups in hand, conversations overlapping into one giant blur. If being invisible deserved an award, I would’ve won gold at least until recently. Now, wherever I walked, whispers followed me like ghosts. “…Isn’t that her?” “The girl Mike dumped.” “I thought she dumped him.” “No, I heard
Paige's POV I walked back to the party, trying to ignore the strange interaction I had just had with Knox. I really should’ve known better. For one stupid second, I’d actually thought Knox Donovan wasn't the same jerk I’d grown up with. What was with his mood swing, one moment he’s calm and reasonable and the next he turns into a condescending jerk. Apparently, I was still gullible enough to believe miracles happened. I sank back onto the couch and reached for my drink, taking a long sip. Leah was dancing with the hockey team and some girls. She was definitely enjoying herself. “Paigey…” Leah stumbled toward me with a grin that could only belong to someone who’d had far too much to drink. She practically collapsed beside me. “There you are.” She squinted at me. “Where’d you go?” “Outside, to get some air.” “Without me?” she gasped dramatically, pressing a hand to her chest. “That’s… rude.” The sharp sting of vodka rolled off her breath. My stomach tightened.
Knox's POV“Who’s the person you’re most attracted to in this circle?” Avery asked, her lashes fluttering as she looked at me.I almost scoffed.Five minutes ago she’d been wrapped around Mike. Now she was batting her lashes at me like he wasn’t sitting two feet away.I almost scoffed. My gaze drifted past her to Paige She was staring at the floor, absently tracing the rim of her cup with her thumb. She’d barely looked up since Mike and Avery kissed.Good.She shouldn’t have had to watch that. I frowned.Since when did I care?“Well?” Avery prompted. I dragged my eyes back to her.Truth or Dare.Stupid game.“Nobody.” The word left my mouth without hesitation.Only…I was looking straight at Paige when I said it.Her head lifted. Our gazes locked. My eyes trailed to her lips. Her plump lips. The memory of that damn kiss hit me out of nowhere. The way she’d fit so effortlessly against me. The warmth of her body in my arms. The taste of her.And that damn dress wasn’t helping. The
Paige's POVI took a slow breath before making my way back. The music was just as loud as before, people shouting over one another as someone cheered near the beer pong table. It almost felt ridiculous that the world could keep spinning after a conversation like that.“Everything okay?” Enzo was the first to notice me.I forced a smile.“Peachy.” He really was a nice guy. “Alright” He studied me for a second, his gaze briefly flicking toward Mike before he gave a small nod and turned back to the conversation.Leah, on the other hand, knew me too well. Her brows knitted together.“You good?” she mouthed.I forced a nod, even though inside my chest still ached but I wasn’t about to fall apart here.Leah didn’t push, she knew I would talk when I was ready.I looked up.Knox’s gaze was still on me. Undeniably intense. For a split second, the noise around us faded into the background. The tension in the air thickened, heavy enough to touch. My heart started to race as I found myself unab
CHAPTER FOURPAIGES POVIt was almost four o’clock in the morning by the time I finally got to my apartment. It was too quiet.Leah was probably sleeping, judging by the fact that she didn't jump me with questions. I dragged myself upstairs to my room, it appeared as though Leah helped me clear th
CHAPTER THREEPAIGES POVHoly f—The punch landed so hard that Mike staggered backwards crashing into a table. My hand flew to my mouth, barely stopping the scream that tried to escape. I could hear gasps from every corner of the club. People whispering“Wait…”“Isn't that Knox, the hockey player?”
CHAPTER TWOPaige’s POVThat voice,“Hello Midget” I froze in place as soon as I met his gaze.Knox Tatum, AKA my best friend's brother and the one person I hated. He had changed a lot. Knox looked like a walking Greek god. I drank the whole sight in. He was over 6’3, towering over my 5’6 frame, hi
PAIGE’S POVI shaved twiceOnce because I’d missed a spot, and again to ensure it was all smooth down there.I gave my reflection another look in the mirror. A smile stretched on my lips on seeing myself. Leah, my best friend, had spent nearly an hour curling my 4b long hair into glossy spirals.M
