First Day Of College

Sophia Walker snuck back into her apartment but she found out her luggage was already moved from her room.

“She is standing in the corner, isn’t she?” Sophia thought to herself with a defeated look and behold, like a soothsayer, there was her mother standing right in the corner with her arms crossed.

“SOPHIA WALKER! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS!?” Erza shouted despite Sophia literally being just a few feet away from her.

“Here we go again,” Sophia was already irritated in advance as she listened to her mother scold her over something so irrelevant because she still got it in the end so what was the fuss about?

She watched her mother do it so passionately like she was auditioning for a role in a movie.

“Don’t you think you’re overreacting a bit?” Sophia blurted out but she wished she could take back her words the moment they left her soft lips.

“Did I just say that out loud?” Sophia’s impulsive thoughts had won this battle.

Erza was an average-height lady, she had brunette hair like her daughter but unlike her daughter, her vision was perfect.

“What did you just say?” Erza shouted but before she could proceed with her advanced scolding, George walked in and both ladies straightened up the moment he entered the room.

“What is the meaning of this? We don’t have all day, I still have to go to work. Money doesn’t grow on trees.” George joked but this only made him the recipient of Erza’s wrath.

He knew he had made a mistake the moment he saw the look in the eyes of his wife.

He slowly looked at Erza and she understood what his eyes said without him even saying it.

“Fuck, I walked right into this one, didn’t I?” But Sophia was glad that she wouldn’t be the only recipient of her mother’s rage.

After a good 30 minutes of verbal bombardment, Erza Walker was finally done and Sophia couldn’t wait to leave the house after this.

George, on the other hand, loved this part of his wife because while Sophia might deny it, she was a splitting image of her mother, personality-wise as well.

Now they were late and it was all thanks to her mother’s rant about being late, the irony of this was mind-boggling.

She sat in the back of her parent's car and tapped away at her phone. She was chatting with her high school friends, they all split up after high school because of their varying academic interests but Sophia was glad. Friendship was nice but taking it as an obligation would drain even the best of friends.

“Sophia, are you nervous?” Erza asked her daughter seeing as it was her first day of school but Sophia wasn’t in the mood for a conversation. She wanted to be with her thoughts for now and that is why she also ended the conversation online.

“No mum, I’m not nervous,” Sophia responded with little to no enthusiasm.

“How is Amanda? I heard she got accepted into a top college?” Erza spoke further, she wanted to speak to her daughter because she didn’t know when next she could speak to her daughter like this because she was going to college.

“Amanda and I aren’t friends, mum,” Sophia responded as she was low on energy.

They were friends in middle school but they fell out after Amanda started spreading rumors about personal information she learned about her in confidence.

The rest of the ride was relatively quiet as they arrived at the campus grounds of the University of Arizona. The campus was bustling and Sophia’s dull face lit up the moment she saw this because it dawned on her that this was a new phase in her life, probably the most important phase of it.

“Do you need us to come to help you settle in?” Erza asked, trying her best not to get emotional seeing as her baby girl was growing into a lady.

Sophia noticed the crack in her mother’s voice as they removed her luggage from the boot of the car.

“I’m okay, mum. I have it handled,” Sophia said, grabbing the luggage but she realized how much this meant to her mother and knew there was no harm in what she was about to do.

Sophia intentionally stumbled to the ground to create the illusion that she couldn’t handle it on her own, this will create a sense of usefulness for her mother.

“Sophia… YOU’RE SO DAMN CLUMSY!” Erza shouted and this momentarily dragged everyone’s attention to her, Sophia was now at the center of the spotlight.

“Fuck my life.” Sophia thought with a hidden smile, she didn’t give a rat ass about what anyone thought, and seeing her mother rush over to help her with her luggage meant the world to her.

She could see how important it was to Erza, Erza could barely hold in her tears as she helped her daughter up.

She tried her best to keep it in but she couldn’t, her emotions broke through her stoic expression and Erza broke down into tears right on campus.

Sophia had on a gentle smile as she embraced her mother, patting her head.

“Your little girl is all grown up, mum,” Sophia whispered into her mother’s ears as she stroked her hair gently. The attention that was once on them didn’t last for long as everyone continued with their day.

George watched on from afar with a smile, this was why he wanted a family because he knew moments like these were worth every time and energy invested in raising his only child.

He didn’t get as emotional as his wife but he understood why Erza got this emotional.

“Um… Mum, aren’t you crying a bit too much?” Sophia questioned her mother, her shoulder was slowly becoming damp, not that she minded but cry me a river was meant to remain an expression.

“Sophia, I’m crying because I know your sex appeal is 0. I just realized I might never get a grandchild.” Erza sobbed profusely.

“Yup, I knew this was too good to be true,” Sophia’s inner monologue said but she knew she would miss the antics of her mother.
