CHLOE

The drive to school was quiet. Damien didn’t ask what was wrong or why I wasn’t resting as much as I should have; instead, he remained silent, clearly not wanting to bother me or intrude on my personal space. I felt bad for keeping things from him. I knew he worried about me right from when I was growing up.

I wasn’t allowed to do things that kids my age did. I wasn’t allowed to leave the house; I had to stay close by so they could keep an eye on me. I thought they were protecting me at first because of what had happened in the past, but even now they kept their eyes on me as if I were still a child; I was twenty-one years old but was still treated as if I were an eight-year-old child.

It made me suspicious. I began questioning their every move regarding my decisions, and each time I asked both of them, they always gave me the same answer, as if it were scripted.
