Sarah POV I broke free from Marly and raced towards the house. There was so much smoke, and the heat was unbearable. “JEFF!” I screamed into the darkness. How could he have survived? The second explosion would have happened when he was in there. Why did he go without me? I would die without Jeff by my side. I felt Carson’s hands take my arms, preventing me from going any further. “He is over there,” he said, but I could not register what he was saying. Who was over where? Why do I care? I need to get to my mate. Carson was more forceful, dragging me away from the flames. “Jeff survived; he is over there!” Carson shouted at me, trying to get my attention. Where? I thought scanning around the house. All I could see was debris. And then I noticed Marly racing towards the side of the house. “JEFF?” I screamed as Carson released me and I followed behind Marly, getting to Jeff before she did. He had burn
Marly POV How could this be? Who could want to see me to lose so much? “What do we do now?” I asked. Marise looked at me with genuine sympathy, “Do you know anybody who would have such a grudge against you as to destroy your mate bond?” she asked. I shook my head, “Not at all,” I responded. “Me neither,” Carson added, taking a hold of my hand. “It would be someone powerful,” Marise stated. Carson looked to Jeff who shook his head, “There is nobody I can think of,” he replied. “Fuck, there has to be someone who has a beef with us,” Carson muttered. “Let’s take it from the other end,” Marise said as she stepped away from Elder John’s corpse. “What does that mean?” I asked. “Elder John is dead. His death was tied to the breaking of your bond. Elder John meant something to the witch who cast this spell,” she summarized. “Meaning with his death, the death of their bond would be payment?” Sarah questioned. M
Carson POV I tilted Marly’s face so I could see her neck and sure enough her mark was fading as well. My heart sank. What have we done? I had hesitated when Marly wanted to save Elder John, and she did not want to go against me, so she let him go. And now everything was in jeopardy of being lost. “It will be alright. Marise will be here shortly,” I said, pulling her into my arms. Marise has been a long-time friend, and at one time a personal interest. That was years ago, but I felt like I should share that information with Marly, but it seemed so trivial. It was years ago and meant nothing to me now. Before I could think any further about it, there was a knock on my door before Jeff and Sarah walked into my office. “We heard Elder John has left this world. That is good news,” Jeff stated, as he sat in front of my desk, pulling Sarah into his lap. “Kind of, yes,” I responded. “What do you mean?” Sarah a
Marly POV Tears continued streaming down my face. I had ignored everyone I saw as I raced towards the forest. I needed to run. To be with Layla, my wolf, as we recognized what this meant for us. And what this meant for our relationship with Carson. All was lost and there was not a damn thing we could do to change it. I quickly shifted, not caring that I had destroyed my clothes. Layla shook out her fur and took off quickly, racing through the forest. Everything was a blur; racing past us as she ran to get rid of her anger and hurt at what had transpired in the dungeon. “It was not his fault,” she said softly. I knew it was not, but I was not ready nor prepared to forgive what had transpired. Before long I sensed someone coming up behind me. Before I could make a move to get into a defensive position, I saw Carson’s Lycan wolf, Kane, race up beside us. He nudged closer to us, trying to get us to slow down.
Marly POV I was going to vomit. I raced out of the dungeons, hearing Carson yell for me to wait. I hit the door running and bent over, bracing my hands on my knees. I spilled all the food I had eaten, and then some, at the knowledge of what had just happened. We had lost everything in one careless move. In that moment I hated Carson and most especially his father. Carson came up behind me putting his hand on my back. I moved away from him in disgust. His father shuffled out of the dungeon, “What is it? What is wrong?” he asked, confused at what was happening. “You are what is wrong!” I screamed at him. Carson stood back, shocked at what I had stated. “You destroyed everything!” I continued as tears streamed down my cheeks. “Marly, he did not know,” Carson started to say when I cut him off. “We knew; we knew what could happen!” I cried out, frustration in my voice. Carson took a cautious step forward, “I
Carson POV We walked slower than usual, allowing my father to keep up with us. I cringed to think what had happened to him over the years. I could see that one of his leg’s had been damaged. I could not sense his wolf. I was not wanting to raise any uncomfortable thoughts for him, so I would wait until he was ready to discuss it. We walked into the dungeon and immediately heard John shouting. He knew when we had entered the building and instantly had to make his presence known. We walked down the corridor and turn towards his cage. I noticed my father was looking at the various Rogues in the cages. “Do you recognize anybody?”, I asked softly. My father shook his head, “No, but I have a sense of sadness for those in captivity. Having been held captive for so many years,” he admitted sadly. Perhaps there was much to learn from my father and his experience. Could we be treating those who betray us different
