Claire’s POV

Sarah came back into Nick’s room while I was putting my phone away.

“Evan’s coming for us. Teo said to call when we’re leaving.” She set her bag on the chair and reached for her coat. “I’ll ride back with you.”

Rafe stepped into the corridor to finish arranging the trip. I moved closer to Nick’s bed, keeping the strap of my bag on my shoulder so I wouldn’t set it down again.

“She wants you to know we’re staying at the clubhouse,” I told him. “So you know where to come when your arm

Nick’s POV“Did you get him back?”The surgeon looked at me, then at Teo. “Yes. We got him back.”My knees nearly gave. I caught the back of a waiting-room chair with my right hand, hard enough to make it scrape across the floor.“Rafe lost a tremendous amount of blood,” he continued. “We controlled the bleeding, but his heart stopped during the operation. We had to resuscitate him again.”“How long?” Teo asked.“We got a pulse back within several minutes.”“That’s not what I asked.”“I know.” The surgeon didn’t look away. “Even a short interruption in blood flow can cause complications. He’s receiving medication to support his blood pressure. He’s on a ventilator, and he’ll stay sedated while we monitor him.”None of it told me whether Rafe would open his eyes.“Brain damage?” I asked.“It’s too early to know. Right now, we’re watching his heart, lungs, kidneys, and neurological responses as closely as we can. The next twenty-four to forty-eight hours are critical.”Teo pressed the h

Teo’s POV“Come on, you stubborn son of a bitch!”Rafe’s chest sank beneath my hands.I pushed again. And again.Blood soaked through the knees of my jeans. The prospect beside me had both hands pressed against the dressing on Rafe’s side, but it wasn’t stopping the bleeding.“Twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty.”I stopped long enough for the prospect to give him the breaths he’d been trained to deliver, then went straight back to compressions.Rafe’s eyes were closed. His mouth hung slightly open.I couldn’t stand looking at it.“Come on, brother. You don’t get to fucking quit.”Nick grabbed Rafe’s shoulder.“Rafe! Open your eyes!”“Nick, get your hand off him!”“He was just fucking talking!”“I know! Now move!”Nick stared at me.I had never shouted at my president like that. Not once in all the years we’d ridden together.I didn’t give a shit.“MOVE, NICK!”He stumbled backward.I went back to counting. My arms were burning. Something popped beneath my palms, and I nearly stopped.I

  • The MC President’s Wanted Woman   Five Fucking Minutes

Nick’s POV“If that son of a bitch had reached through the fence and grabbed her, which one of your men would’ve stopped him?”Claire stood in the middle of the kitchen, shaking so hard she could barely hold my phone.Rafe had come to tell us the prospect on gate watch couldn’t identify the pickup. He hadn’t gotten another word out before Claire went after him.“Claire, nobody came through the fence,” he answered.“Then how the fuck did somebody get close enough to take Lilly’s picture?”“We’re trying to figure that out.”“Trying?” She laughed, wiping at her wet cheeks. “That’s what everybody keeps telling me! You’re trying, the police are trying, Nick’s trying. Meanwhile, my daughter can’t even go outside without some bastard watching her!”I stepped between them.“Claire, Investigator Torres is still on the phone.”“I know he’s on the phone!”She turned away, pressing my cell against her ear.“I’m sorry, Investigator. No, I wasn’t yelling at you.”Taryn stood beside the table holdin

Nick’s POVThe pancake batter slid toward the edge of the counter when I tried to hold the bowl steady with my left hand.“Don’t,” Claire said behind me.“I’ve got it.”“You’ve got batter on your boot.”I looked down. A pale stripe ran from my jeans to the toe. Lilly crouched beside me, fascinated.“It looks like bird poop.”“Thanks, peanut.”She laughed, but it didn’t last. She stood and pulled the hem of Claire’s shirt. “Can we go see Daddy’s flowers today?”Claire’s hand stopped halfway to the paper towels. “Not today, sweetheart.”“Tomorrow?”“We’ll talk about it.”“But the picture could get wet.”“The funeral man tucked it under the ribbon,” I said. “Remember? He made sure it wouldn’t blow away.”“Rain isn’t wind.”“No, ma’am. It isn’t.”Claire put down the towels, crouched, and opened her arms. Lilly walked into them without another word. I used my good hand to drag the bowl away from the edge. My shoulder hurt so badly I wanted to throw the fucking thing across the kitchen.“Pa

Roy’s POVVern put my money on the kitchen table, but he kept his other hand inside his coat.“Driver gets here at eleven. You pay him yourself.”I looked from the envelope to the bulge in his coat pocket. He’d spent eight years hauling for me without needing a gun between us.“Take your hand out.”“You need to finish packing.”My bag stood beside the door. He’d stepped around it coming in.“You bring that in here for me?”He withdrew his empty hand slowly. “I brought it because I watched the news. And because you keep telling me one more night.”The refrigerator clicked off. Without it, I could hear him breathing through his nose.“You called somebody?”“The driver. Like you asked.”I held out my hand for his phone. He looked at it, then at the door behind him.“Roy, I’ve done what I said I would.”“Then give it here.”He unlocked it before passing it over. The local news page was still open, with a photograph taken outside the funeral home that afternoon.Claire stood beside Nick in

Claire’s POV“Mommy, you’re bending it.”I loosened my grip on Lilly’s drawing. One corner had caught beneath the strap of my bag, and I couldn’t get it free while she held my wrist.“Let go a second, baby.”“You’ll drop it.”“I won’t.”Nick took the bag off my shoulder with his right hand. I worked the paper loose, and he settled the strap back over my shoulder. I smoothed the drawing against my skirt, but the crease stayed across the yellow sun.Lilly rubbed it with her thumb. “Now it’s got a line.”“We can lay it flat inside.”She took it back before I could try again.Rafe came up from parking the car and held the funeral-home door. Nick waited while I got Lilly moving, his left arm still supported against his body.“Mrs. Bennett?”The funeral director stood beside the guest book. I had spoken to him four times that week, but it took me a moment to answer.Three weeks had passed since Nick and Teo visited Nadine and Leanne in the hospital. Teo had brought them to their rooms at th
