I watched as Valerie walked away, her back stiff with anger. Winning the race had been exhilarating, but the argument with Valerie had left a bitter taste in my mouth. I knew that my actions hadn't portrayed me as a winner, not in her eyes at least.

Valerie had made a good point earlier. What if I hadn't won? What would have happened to her? It wasn't like I had wanted to bet on her in the first place, but illegal street races were rough, and you had to follow the rules, no matter how unfair they seemed.

I knew that I had messed up.

"You okay man?" Ryan asked as he saw Valerie leaving. I shrugged my shoulders, letting out a heavy sigh. "Not great," I admitted, running a hand through my hair. "Valerie has every right to be mad at me."
