Eleanor's POV

I held the phone so tightly in my hand that I thought it might shatter.

If I had even a fraction of Devon's superpowers, I swear the damn thing would’ve cracked in half by now.

I was seething.

How dare they!

How fucking dare they lie to me like this? Hide things from me like I was some fragile, clueless doll in a gilded box.

Devon.

Franco.

Even Jim.

Franco, of all people, is a werewolf? And the reason my father is lying unconscious in bed somewhere in this private residence, fighting for his life?

The scream tore out of my throat like glass. Raw. Wild. Uncontrolled. I didn’t care if it woke the guards or disturbed the others in the private wing. I wanted the wind to carry it. Let the entire damn world hear it.

A soft breeze brushed across my face, cool against the sweat on my skin. Dawn was beginning to stretch across the sky. Gentle. Unaware. Mocking.

Then I heard him, his voice— Strong. Cold.

“No. You won’t, Eleanor.”

I spun, heart slamming against my ribs.

Jim stood b

  • The President's Mate   Chapter 148 The Trail of the Ghost

Devon POVThe road to the Cave of the Forgotten was a jagged scar through the dark wilderness, and every jolt of the SUV felt like a hammer striking my raw nerves. I sat in the back, the leather of the seat creaking under my weight, feeling the heavy, suffocating silence of the forest pressing in on us. It shouldn't have taken this long. Time was stretching, distorting, turning every minute into an hour of agony. My mind kept drifting back to the sanctuary of our chamber, just before we left.I remember the weight of the leather pants as I pulled them on, my muscles still stiff, protesting every movement. I was reaching for my jacket when I felt him. Jimmie. He didn't say a word, just stepped up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. He pressed his face against my back, his warmth seeping through my shirt and hitting my skin like a brand. For a heartbeat, I just closed my eyes and leaned into him. The Alpha, the President, the Warrior—all of that stripped away until I was jus

  • The President's Mate   Chapter 147 Black Seas

Jimmie POVHe was awake. My wolf was awake. That was the only thought spinning through my mind as I looked into those glowing gold eyes. It was the moment I had prayed for, but the timing was a jagged blade to the heart. Why did he have to wake up now? Why, at the exact second, was his world crumbling again?"Out," I said, my voice low and steady, though my insides were a chaotic mess. I didn't look back at them. "Fara, Franco, Klaus... everyone. Out. Now."They didn't argue. The command of a Luna was absolute, especially one who had just brought their Alpha back from the brink. The heavy doors clicked shut, leaving only the sound of Devon’s ragged, powerful breathing filling the chamber."My wolf," I whispered. I sat on the edge of the bed as he struggled to push himself upright. His movements were stiff, his body still protesting the trauma it had endured, but his spirit was a roaring fire."Hey," he rasped, his voice sandpaper and honey.I didn't give him a chance to say anything e

  • The President's Mate   Chapter 146 The Slow Return

Jimmie POVThe Pack House was quiet now, but it wasn't the peaceful silence of a sanctuary. It was the heavy, breathless hush of a recovery room.It had been one week. One week since the sky over Astria turned orange with the fire of the Sledge’s end. One week since I dragged Devon’s broken body through a wall of flame, feeling my own skin blister as I refused to let go. One week since I came back from that ancient cave, from the presence of the Great Thora. I hadn't told anyone about the waterfall, the ancient markings, or the woman with Devon’s eyes. How could I? They were already looking at me like I was a miracle; I didn't need them looking at me like I was a ghost. It had been one week since we lost Molly. The grief for her was a dull, constant ache in the back of my throat. She had sacrificed everything for a world she believed in, and now her ash-colored fur was only a memory in the wind. And for one week, Devon hadn't stirred. He lay in the centre of our massive bed, the silk

  • The President's Mate   Chapter 145 The Final Spark

Jimmie POVThe cold of the concrete floor bit into my skin, but it was the silence that truly woke me. I gasped, my lungs burning as if they were tasting air for the first time. My hand flew to my neck, trembling, searching for the jagged hole Eleanor’s bullet had left behind.Nothing. The skin was smooth, warm, and perfectly healed. The only evidence of my death was the sticky, drying pool of crimson that coated my back and the floor beneath me.I sat up slowly, my head spinning. The Sledge basement was still a hellscape of red emergency lights and shadows. My eyes darted to the far corner, and my heart shattered. Molly lay there, her body small and motionless, her ash-colored hair fanned out in the dust."Molly," I whispered, the name catching in my throat like a shard of glass."Is this what you want, Devon! Is it!"The shrill, unhinged scream of Eleanor James ripped through the room. I stayed low, my eyes finding her. She was pacing the perimeter of the cell like a caged animal, h

  • The President's Mate   Chapter 144 World’s Apart

Jimmie POVI was adrift in a void. At first, there was only the cold, a numbing weightlessness that made me think I had finally stopped existing. But then, something shattered the silence—sound seeping in, constant and rhythmic, like the beat of the earth itself, punctuated by a far-off din speeding by.The ringing in my ears was deafening. I tried to move, to reach for the wound in my neck where Eleanor’s bullet had torn through my life, but my hand met nothing but smooth, unblemished skin. I gasped, my eyes snapping open.I wasn't in the abattoir anymore.I was in a place where the darkness seemed to have a life of its own. It started with complete darkness, an engulfing depth that left me feeling submerged, but then a glimmer of light erupted from within the rock. The light grew, casting eerie shadows on the walls of an ancient cave.It was staggering. The walls were not just rock formations—rather, they were a living tapestry of history. Ancient markings like cuneiform and symbols

  • The President's Mate   Chapter 143 Cage, Love & Sorrows.

Jimmie POVThe word died in my throat. The sight before me was a sacrilege. My Alpha, the most powerful man I had ever known, was pinned to a tilted metal slab like a common lab specimen. Huge steel screws were driven through his palms and his feet, anchoring him in a cruciform of agony. On both sides of his torso, thick silver rods were jabbed into his flanks, the flesh around them blackened and raw.He was a ghost. A hollowed-out shade of the man I loved. His chest was matted with thick, dried crimson, and his head was slumped to the side, chin resting on his collarbone. He was motionless. Unconscious."God, please," I whispered, the tears finally breaking over my lids. "Please let him be alive."I forgot about the traps. I forgot about Eleanor and Jim. I forgot that I was in the heart of enemy territory. I dropped my guns and ran. I skidded across the blood-slicked floor, reaching the base of the slab and reaching up.I took his face in my hands. His skin was ice-cold, grey as the
