Chapter 2

Author: Evil SIL
Looking at Mr. Whitmore's face, so certain that I'd embezzled money, I almost laughed.

The rare tropical poison inside Irene needed the best wild botanicals as a primer if it was going to be suppressed.

That hundred thousand wouldn't even buy half a root hair from a century-old mountain ginseng.

I knew I was only adopted by the Whitmores. To repay their kindness, I'd never once asked for money.

For five years, I'd worked three jobs a day to buy herbs.

To save money, I'd even gone deep into the mountains to gather them myself. More than once, I'd fallen from cliff walls and come back covered in injuries.

But I couldn't be bothered to explain.

When people have already decided you're a thief, trying to prove yourself only makes them wonder where you got the money and accuse you of putting on an act.

Irene heard the noise in the living room and came out with her cane.

When she saw what was on the floor, her eyes turned completely cold.

"I thought you were just playing petty tricks to take credit. I didn't expect your heart to be this vicious.

"Using poison like this to fool me. Are you hoping I die sooner so you can swallow the Whitmore fortune?"

I ignored her vicious words, crouched down, and reached for the small purple-clay medicine pot.

I'd searched old kilns everywhere for that antique pot because I needed the best possible extraction.

Inside it was the heart-protecting pill I'd spent three days and nights refining for her to take today.

Just as my fingers were about to touch the pot, the old woman slammed her cane down.

The purple-clay pot shattered instantly. The heart-protecting pill that had cost me endless effort was crushed mercilessly into the floor.

I lifted my head and looked at the old woman quietly.

So this was the family I'd poured my heart into saving for five years.

Tyler sneered from the side.

"What? Heartbroken over your junk?"

He glanced at the dense blisters and scars on the back of my hand from making medicine, his face full of disdain.

"Don't show off those disgusting hands to play pitiful. Who's that bitter little act for? It makes me nauseous."

Calmly, I bent down, picked up the old medical book, and patted the dust off it.

"Since you're all this confident, I wish Old Mrs. Whitmore a long life."

After that, I walked out the front door without looking back.

Tyler stood by the doorway with his arms crossed and sneered at my back. "Stop pretending you're noble. Without the Whitmore family, you won't even be able to afford food.

"Watch. In less than three days, he'll crawl back like a dog and--"

Before he could finish, every Whitmore face froze.

At the gate, a Rolls-Royce with a string of matching VIP plates stopped in front of me.

The door opened, and a middle-aged woman hurried out.

Under the Whitmores' stunned gazes, she walked to me and bowed respectfully.

"Mr. Whitmore, we've finally found you."

I recognized her and nodded faintly.

"Let's go."

She respectfully opened the car door for me. I sat in the back, and the door closed.

The Rolls-Royce drove away, leaving the four Whitmores standing there in shock.

Three days later, Irene breathed her last in extreme agony. When the tubes were pulled, the skin all over her body had ulcerated and turned black. Before she died, a single tear rolled from the corner of her eye. Her eyes stared fixedly at the ceiling, unable to close.I wondered whether, in the final moment of her life, she regretted smashing that purple-clay medicine pot. With Irene's death, the Whitmore family completely fell apart.Because their cash flow had snapped, the bank came to seize the Whitmore villa and company. To shift blame, Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore took hospital surveillance footage to the police and reported Tyler."It was him! He found an illegal doctor to inject poison into my mother! This is murder! This is fraud!"Tyler was caught on the spot by police while trying to run off with the last of the expensive watches. For illegal medical practice causing death and massive fraud, Tyler was sentenced to ten years in prison. On a late autumn evening, the wind wa

The hospital issued its final warning. If they couldn't pay the medical bills, the tubes would have to be pulled. With no other choice, Mrs. Whitmore prepared to mortgage the villa. When she went home to look for the deed, she kicked the old canvas bag Tyler had dumped on the floor the day I left.Looking at the scattered herbs on the floor, Mrs. Whitmore was overjoyed. She remembered I'd once said these herbs were expensive.Desperate enough to try anything, she stuffed the scattered things back into the bag and took a taxi straight to an herbal pharmacy.Unfortunately for her, the expert on duty today was Dr. Mercer.Mrs. Whitmore pushed the canvas bag onto the counter, her voice hoarse. "Dr. Mercer, please look at these herbs. How much are they worth? I need money urgently to save a life..."Dr. Mercer had been visibly impatient, but when her gaze swept over the contents of the bag, she froze. She put on her reading glasses, picked up one slice of herb with trembling hands,

After being thrown out of the hotel, the Whitmores returned to the hospital in despair. The ICU ward cost hundreds of thousands a day. Irene barely clung to life with expensive imported machines and emergency injections.Tyler stood outside the ward, as anxious as a cat on a hot tin roof.It wasn't because he felt sorry for Irene. It was because she hadn't had time to make a will.If she died like this, then under legal procedure, he definitely wouldn't get the largest share of the Whitmore fortune. He would even be blamed by Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore for what had happened at the banquet.No. Irene absolutely couldn't die right now. With nowhere else to turn, Tyler used the rich-kid group chats he used to hang around in and spent a fortune contacting a so-called top specialist who claimed to have returned from America. While Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore were away paying fees, Tyler secretly brought the masked quack into the ward."This is a targeted wonder drug I spent a million on. The Whitmores searched for me like mad.My calls wouldn't go through. Their messages were blocked. It wasn't until eight that evening that Mrs. Whitmore used her social connections to learn I was attending a medical masters' exchange dinner. When Mrs. Whitmore barged into the banquet hall with Mr. Whitmore and Tyler, all three of them froze. In the center of the glittering hall, I was wearing a perfectly tailored custom suit, surrounded by the country's top medical experts.Among them was Dr. Mercer, the same woman they had cursed as superstitious and chased out of the homecoming banquet earlier that day.At that moment, Dr. Mercer looked like an eager student, asking me for advice with excitement all over her face."Dr. Whitmore, I've spent three days studying the nine-turn cardiac stabilization technique you mentioned, but I still can't get one point's positioning right. Would you be willing to guide me?"I smiled faintly and was about to speak when Mrs. Whitmore's shrill voi

The banquet hall went deathly silent. The huge wreath stood in the center of the room like a slap across the Whitmores' faces.Tyler went pale with fright and stumbled backward. When he saw the name "Julian Whitmore" on the wreath, he screamed in terror."It's Julian Whitmore! That bastard sent a wreath to curse Grandma!"Grandma was perfectly fine after drinking my seafood soup. She only vomited blood because she saw that unlucky wreath and got angry!"Mrs. Whitmore was kneeling on the floor in a panic, trying to help the old woman breathe. When she heard Tyler, her frantic nerves finally found somewhere to vent. Her eyes bloodshot, she cursed at the wreath. "Julian Whitmore is an ungrateful wolf we could never tame. The Whitmore family raised him for five years, and after getting kicked out, he used such a vicious method to curse my mother!"Mr. Whitmore also gritted his teeth and echoed her. "He did it on purpose! He knew today was Tyler's homecoming banquet, so he sent this

Three days later, the Whitmore family held a grand homecoming banquet for Tyler. To show off their connections, Mrs. Whitmore even invited Dr. Eleanor Mercer, one of the country's leading herbal medicine authorities.Dr. Mercer had originally come to congratulate them out of respect for her past friendship with the Whitmores. But when she saw Irene being helped onto the stage by Tyler, her expression changed dramatically.Irene was smiling and greeting guests with a flushed face, but in Dr. Mercer's eyes, the sight was terrifying.Irene's forehead was dark, and the black line at the base of her neck had already spread behind her ear.Dr. Mercer pushed through the crowd and rushed onto the stage, shouting, "Mrs. Whitmore! Your face has that false, feverish flush, and the black line has crossed your ear. This is poison reaching the heart. This is the body's last rally before death!"Did you stop the suppressant Julian prescribed? Hurry! Take his heart-protecting pill right now and

Tyler Whitmore saw me turn away without resisting, as if his anger had nothing to push against. It only made him more relentless. He picked up the medicinal meal, covered his nose in disgust, and dumped it straight into the trash can beside him."It reeks of cheapness. Just smelling it makes me si
