The woman seemed to forget how to breathe for a moment. She looked at me as though she were waiting for recognition to appear on my face, but when it didn't, she slowly lowered herself into the chair beside my bed.

“It's all right,” she said, though her trembling voice suggested otherwise. “You've been through a terrible accident. The doctor said you might be confused when you woke up.”

I glanced at the man standing behind her. He had said they had finally found me, but I couldn't understand what he meant. Found me where? And why had they been searching for Elara?

“Could you tell me how you know I'm your daughter?” I asked.

The man pulled a chair closer. “Your name is Elara Chen. You were separated from us when you were very young. We spent years trying to find you, but every lead brought us nowhere. Recently, we came across information that helped us establish your identity. We were on our way to see you when we learned about the accident.”

He paused, looking at me carefully.

“When we arrived, you were already being taken to the hospital. We followed the ambulance and stayed here while the doctors treated you.”

I listened without interrupting. The explanation was simple enough, but it did little to settle the uneasiness growing inside me. I had no memory of being separated from anyone. The fragments of Elara's childhood that had surfaced earlier showed a different home, different parents, and a life in which these people had never existed.

“How did you establish my identity?” I asked.

The woman exchanged a glance with her husband. “We found evidence connecting you to us. There are things we still need to explain, but we wanted to wait until you were feeling better.”

It wasn't a complete answer, and I noticed that they seemed reluctant to say more. Still, I was too exhausted to press them. Whatever had happened to Elara before the accident, I needed time to understand it.

The three young men had remained near the door, watching the conversation with varying degrees of concern. The eldest stepped forward when his father glanced at him.

“I'm Julian,” he said. “Your older brother.”

He gestured towards the other two. “This is Adrian, and that's Nathan. We're your brothers.”

I looked from one face to another, trying to find something familiar. They were strangers to me, yet they spoke with the ease of people who had spent years imagining what they would say when they finally found their missing sister.

“I'm sorry,” I said. “I don't remember any of you.”

Julian's expression tightened briefly, but he nodded. “You don't have to apologize. We just want you to recover.”

His response surprised me. I had expected questions, perhaps even frustration, but none of them demanded that I remember a childhood I had never shared with them. Their disappointment was obvious, yet they made room for my confusion.

The woman reached for the blanket that had slipped from my shoulder and straightened it gently. I allowed her to do so, though the gesture left me uncomfortable. It was an ordinary act of affection, the kind a mother might perform without thinking, but I had no memory of receiving it from her.

“What happens now?” I asked.

“For now, you rest,” she replied. “The doctors want to monitor you for a little longer. Once they are satisfied with your recovery, we'll take you home.”

Home.

The word brought another set of memories to the surface. A modest house. Gracious laughing in the kitchen. A familiar voice calling Elara to dinner. Then the bedroom, the betrayal, and the argument that had ended with Elara running into the rain.

I pressed my fingers against the blanket, trying to steady myself.

The woman noticed. “Are you in pain?”

“No. I just need a moment.”

They stayed for a little longer, asking whether I needed anything and promising to return the following morning. Before leaving, Julian placed his phone number on the bedside table in case I wanted to contact him. He didn't ask me to call. He simply made sure I had the option.

When the door finally closed behind them, I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

I was beginning to understand the situation, at least in part. These people were Elara's biological family. They had searched for her, found her, and brought her to the hospital. Elara, however, had grown up believing another couple were her parents.

I could not explain why her life had taken that path, and I couldn't pretend that I felt any connection to the people who had just left. Their relationship with Elara was real, but it belonged to a life I had never lived.

I turned towards the bedside table and picked up Julian's card. His number was printed beneath his name, along with the name of a company I didn't recognize. I set it down again and leaned back against the pillow.

The memories came more easily when I stopped fighting them. I remembered the house where Elara had grown up, the clothes in her wardrobe, and the way she used to save messages from people she cared about. I remembered her fiancé's smile and the trust she had placed in him. Most clearly, I remembered Gracious standing in that bedroom, looking at Elara without remorse.

But there were gaps. I could recall the shock of learning she was adopted, the desperate need to escape the house, and the wet pavement beneath her feet. After that, the memories blurred. I knew a truck had struck her, but I couldn't reconstruct every second leading to the collision.

I tried to return to my own final memories, hoping they might offer an explanation. The palace fire came back in fragments, along with Valeric's voice and the unbearable heat. Yet the moment of my death remained beyond my reach. I could remember that I had died, but not everything that had happened before the darkness took me.

A nurse came in later to check my condition and remind me that the doctor would be reviewing my progress in the morning. I asked whether the police had spoken to anyone about the accident.

“They're investigating,” she said. “They may want to speak with you when you're feeling stronger.”

“Do they know what happened?”

“Not everything. The doctor said you weren't conscious when you arrived, so you'll have to tell them what you remember.”

I thanked her, then watched as she left.

There was little else I could do that evening. My body was exhausted, my memories were incomplete, and the world beyond the hospital window was unfamiliar. I needed to recover before I could make sense of any of it.

Still, one thought stayed with me as I settled beneath the blanket. Elara had spent her life believing she belonged to one family, while another family had spent years searching for her. She had discovered the truth only shortly before the accident.

I wondered how much of her life had been shaped by a lie she hadn't known existed.

For now, I had no answers. I only knew that I had awakened in her body, carrying memories that were not mine, and that the people who had found her expected to see their daughter when they looked at me.

I closed my eyes, but sleep did not come easily. Somewhere in the unfamiliar world beyond the hospital walls, Elara's life was waiting for me to understand it.

It wasn't saved under a name, and the brief conversation had given me little to work with.“We've met before.”The words bothered me more than they should have. Elara's memories held faces, conversations, and fragments of her daily life, but none came to mind when I tried to place the voice. I couldn't tell whether the man had mistaken me for someone else or whether he genuinely knew Elara.I saved the number and set the phone aside. seraphyna pov: Morning came with a dull ache in my shoulder and the sound of someone arguing quietly outside my room. I had barely slept, and the hospital bed had done little to ease the stiffness in my back. When the door opened, Julian stepped inside carrying a paper bag and two cups of coffee.“I brought you breakfast,” he said, placing the bag on the table. “The nurse told me you could eat normally now.”“Thank you.”He pulled a chair closer, but before sitting, he looked at me as though he were trying to decide whether to ask something. I recognized the expression. I had seen it on the faces of courtiers who wanted an answer they were afraid to request.“You can ask,” I told him.“Do you remember anything about us? Even something small?”I shook my head. “I remember what I've been told. I know you're my brother, but I don't remember growing up with you.”He lowered his eyes to his coffee. “We didn't grow up together either. Not the way we should have.”There was no accusation in

The first thing I noticed was the smell. It was sharp and unfamiliar, nothing like the incense that used to fill the palace halls of Elyndor. I opened my eyes slowly, expecting to see the familiar canopy above my bed, but found a white ceiling crossed by a strip of bright light. A steady beeping came from somewhere beside me, and the thin blanket covering my body felt strange against my skin. For several seconds, I lay still, trying to understand where I was. My last clear memory was of fire spreading through the palace, smoke filling my lungs, and Valeric's voice calling my name. I remembered reaching for him. I remembered the heat. After that, everything became indistinct.I turned my head and winced. Pain travelled from my shoulder down my arm, and when I tried to sit up, the room tilted. I sank back against the pillow, breathing through the discomfort."You're awake."A woman in pale blue clothing hurried to my bedside. She checked the monitor beside me, then adjusted something at
