FAZER LOGINLYRA POV
I jolt up in a rush as I see Lucien emerging from the darkness just like a demon straight from hell. Long gone are the butterflies I used to feel when he was near, or the way warmth would spread through me at the sight of him. This time, when our eyes lock, all I feel is disgust and anger. Not even the matebond can blind me now that I’ve seen his true self.
“You think I didn’t see you run off in the middle of the most important night of my life?” Lucien’s voice reverberates through the stone walls again. “You were a bad, bad Omega. That behavior is unacceptable.”
I’m stunned for a moment. How dare he come find me only to scold me after blindsiding me in front of the entire pack? I didn’t expect an apology from him, but this was absurd. As an Omega, I learned to have a thick skin, but I’m not a rug to be walked over like this.
Anger explodes inside of me, and I do something I never thought I would ever do in my whole life—raise my voice at an Alpha.
“You lied to me!” I shout, my fists shaking, only now from fury rather than cold. “You said tonight would be special!”
“And it should’ve been,” he counters, still marching toward me. “Tonight, I intended to show you what our life would be like. You were supposed to have stayed and accepted my Luna like a good Omega. It was a test, and you failed.” There’s a sinister edge to his smile as his lips curve, but it doesn’t scare me away.
Despite Lucien towering over me, I take a bold step toward him without fear. “Of course, I would never accept to be your side piece!”
Lucien cocks his head, letting out a huff. “What did you think you could be? My Luna?” A scoff that’s almost a laugh bursts out of him. “Please. I’m meant to be the greatest Alpha of them all. I could never have some low scum like you by my side tainting my image. Liana is a much better match for someone like me.”
Perhaps I had underestimated how strong and naive the matebond could be, because the second his words hit me, a wave of sadness and heartache cuts through the anger, making me gasp. I fight the urge to clutch my chest painfully.
“Liana was my first option all along,” Lucien continued. I didn’t know if he was oblivious to the fact he was hammering my shattered heart over and over again, or if he knew all too well and kept going because he enjoyed it. Probably the latter.
“We had planned to take each other as chosen mates a long time ago. But then you came into the picture and made everything more difficult.”
In a moment of clarity, annoyance surged through the sorrow once again. “Why didn’t you reject me as soon as you found out then?” I shouted. “If you never planned on accepting me as your mate, you could have rejected me and spared me the pain and humiliation instead of leading me on!”
“I never led you on,” he replies calmly, “because I don’t want to reject you.”
That takes me off guard. I furrow my brows, quietly, almost subconsciously, muttering, “What?”
“I don’t care how you feel about my plans. I need you to keep my wolf satisfied—Liana doesn’t get him off like you do,” Lucien confesses, to my utmost disbelief. He creeps closer, hands reaching for me as he whispers, “You are my slutty Omega mate, and you will serve me whether you like it or not.”
I had followed orders my whole life. I was taught to lower my head. To never talk back. To obey every command.
For the first time, I fight against that learned instinct.
“No!” I scream as my palms splay across Lucien’s chest, shoving him back.
Lucien is much bigger and stronger than me. All of my force is barely enough to send him staggering half a step. Still, I don’t back down. Not until I see the thrill in his eyes, as if my disobedience excites him—and that scares me way more than if he’d gotten mad.
In a sudden move, Lucien wraps his fist around my wrist, applying so much force it hurts. “Do I need to muzzle you to keep your mouth shut, little slut? You’ll do as I say without arguing,” he growls menacingly. “Now, take your clothes off and bend over for me. I’ll fuck you however long my wolf wants to.”
“No! No!” I continue to scream, entering fight or flight mode as panic spikes.
I start thrashing against Lucien’s grip, twisting and turning, hitting him repeatedly with my free hand. It has zero effect on him. It’s like I’m fighting against a boulder. He shoves me back forcefully, making me disoriented as my back hits the wall hard. Then, while I’m recovering my senses, he grabs the chains used for prisoners and quickly cuffs both of my wrists, binding me to the ceiling.
As fear soars, I open my mouth to scream as loud as I can, praying someone—anyone—will hear me and come to my aid. Unfortunately, before I can make a sound, Lucien’s fingers lunge for my neck, cutting my airway so I can’t breathe.
“Want me to get rough with you? Fine,” he spits.
I continue thrashing as his hands grab at my clothes, but all it does is drain my energy faster. As his grip on my throat tightens, the corners of my vision start turning dark. Yet before I pass out, I see his eyes cloud over.
He releases me. I start coughing frantically, my lungs gasping for air. By the time I manage to recompose myself, his eyes have gone back to normal.
“Shame.” A frustrated sigh leaves him. “My Luna calls me, and I can’t keep her waiting.” He cocks his head, smirking like an insane man. His voice becomes darker, huskier as he adds, “But you’ll wait for me like the good little slut you are, won’t you, my Omega?”
Never, I want to say, but I’m too afraid to confront him after what he almost did. Lucien turns around, and a wave of pure relief crashes over me as I realize he’s leaving.
“Tonight is special. I’ll finally mark Liana,” he continues as he distances himself from me, and with each step, it gets easier to breathe. But then he stops, and I freeze again. “As for you… I think I’ll keep you there ‘til the morning.” He turns his head slowly to steal one last glance at me over his shoulder. “I like how you look in chains. Maybe once my Luna is satisfied, I can come and have some fun with you.”
Lucien’s sinister laugh makes my stomach tighten. Its echoes linger even after he leaves the dungeons as I’m left chained, alone, and in the dark.
And if I can’t find a way to free myself, this might be the last night of my life.
LYRA POVAs I stand before the towering double doors of the Lycan King’s Throne Room, I need a moment to steady my breathing. My heart pounds so loudly I’m sure the guards on either side of the entrance can hear it. And though it’s quiet in my head, the silence doesn’t comfort me.Moon, I wish you were here with me, I whisper to myself, and as expected, get no response.I still haven’t gotten used to not feeling her presence as strongly. The emptiness where she should have been feels wrong, as though an essential part of me has been ripped from me.My fingers tighten around the fabric of my dress nervously. It was given to me right before I left the hospital, since my already worn out clothes had to be thrown out after a day out in the wilderness. The piece is nicer than anything I’ve worn in years, and maybe that’s why I feel so uncomfortable in it.Because in the end, it doesn't change who I am.An omega. A nobody. A runaway standing at the doors of a king.I swallow hard, forcing m
LUCIEN POV“Ah!”The morning after my Alpha Ceremony, I’m jolted awake by a sharp stabbing pain in my heart. I sit up in bed, instinctively pressing a hand to my chest in an ineffective attempt to numb the discomfort. It only gets worse as the seconds pass. A second, stronger wave hits me, and I groan louder.“Lucien?” Liana’s sweet, groggy voice sounds distant, muffled by the pain, even though she’s lying right next to me. “What’s going on?” she asks, rubbing her eyes. That’s a good fucking question.I’m an Alpha, the most powerful in my pack. I never get sick. I can’t remember the last time I felt mild discomfort—let alone a pain this great. Strangely enough, if I didn’t know that it’s impossible for someone with a bloodline like mine to have a heart attack, I’d assume I was having one. What the hell was going on with me?Then, subtly, I hear my wolf whimper, “Mate…”At that moment, it clicks.“Argh!” I grunt for the third time as the pain intensifies, and I clutch my chest harder.
LYRA POVMy senses come back to me slowly. Everything hurts, from my fatigued muscles to my bruised limbs, tiny cuts scattered across my arms and legs after carelessly running through the forest. I also have a terrible headache. And to top it all off, it seems my wolf is still hibernating, her presence still faint and distant, dormant deep within me. But that seems unimportant as questions start to flood my mind.Am I dead? No, I’d like to think the afterlife wouldn’t be this painful. Yet how could I still be alive? That huge, monstrous beast… I was sure it was ready to eat me. Unless maybe it was never even real, just a product of an exhausted, adrenaline-filled mind.In an attempt to understand what was going on, I forced my heavy eyelids open. The first sight that greeted me was an endless expanse of white. For a moment, I wondered if I could really be in the afterlife. Then my vision came into focus, and I realized my pristine surroundings were composed of bright lights and ivory
LYRA POVA rush of pain surges through me, but I don’t stumble. Even when it feels like my chest is about to tear open, I don’t slow down. I keep pushing through, sprinting away from Shadow Lake as though I’m running a marathon to save my life. In a way, I guess I am.At least the adrenaline helps mask the intense pain. The anxiety of not knowing where I’m going combined with the fear of what danger may lurk nearby keep me sharp and motivated as I continue to run faster and faster. But I realize I haven’t seen the worst of it when I suddenly feel my wolf’s consciousness start to waver.“Moon?!” I call out, already desperate.“Sorry, Lyra…” she responds, but her voice is too faint. “The rejection… It… Weakened me.” Fear spikes as I anticipate her next words. “I will be out… for a while.”“What do you mean ‘out?’” I wonder, my pulse quickening. “I need you, Moon! You can’t leave me now!”“You’ll be… Okay,” she insists, though my despondency won’t let me believe it. “It’ll be… Good. Whil
LYRA POVThe night in the dungeon feels endless. If the pain and humiliation of discovering my mate’s betrayal in the most heartbreaking way possible weren’t enough, I also have to deal with the physical pain of feeling him cheat by making love to another she-wolf all night. Although my mind knows better than to cry for such a shameless, cruel male, my body remains a victim of the magic bond that still exists between us. It causes my stomach to churn and my heart to tighten, making it hard to breathe. That is when I realize, this is the same pain I had been feeling for the past couple of days. It was obvious Lucien had been fucking Liana ever after mating with me. If only I had connected the dots earlier… Maybe I wouldn’t be in this position now.Besides the pain, I feel frustrated with myself. Though it’s beyond my control, it’s pathetic that Lucien’s cheating affects me so much. I’m angry at him, but I’m more angry at myself for being unable to completely cut ties with him. Damn the
