Chapter 3

Author: Anna
Sophie caught me staring.

She straightened her posture, intentionally letting the emerald catch the light. Luke reached into his pocket and tossed something at me. It clattered against the floor.

He had the smug, self-righteous look of a man performing an act of charity. "Take it. That’s for you."

I looked down. It was a cheap, wooden trinket—rough-cut, unfinished, and already flaking. He could empty his family’s vault for Sophie, but for me, he’d brought something off a scrap pile.

I kicked the piece of junk back toward his boots. "Keep it. Give your 'great gift' to Sophie."

Luke’s face twisted. He snatched the trinket off the floor and hurled it through the open window. "Fine! If you don't want it, let it rot."

Sophie stamped her foot, her eyes welling with crocodile tears. "Sister, how could you? Luke and I picked that out together. We put so much thought into it." She reached back, taking a garment from the servant behind her and holding it out to me. "And since you’re moving in with us, I made you something myself."

It was a pink silk slip. Low-cut, sheer, and incredibly short. The kind of thing worn by a woman kept around for one purpose and one purpose only.

I actually laughed. Pink. That cut. For me.

I understood exactly why they’d come today. This wasn't a visit; it was a public humiliation. They wanted me to accept my new role as a nameless, rankless kept woman. I looked at Sophie, seeing the sickening satisfaction buried beneath her performance.

"I told you," I said, my voice low and dangerous. "We are finished. If you’re done talking, get out of my house."

They weren't listening. Sophie grabbed my arm, trying to haul me toward the stairs. "Sister, don't say things you don't mean! I'm not even sure this fits—why don't you just strip down and try it on now?"

I yanked my arm back. "Get your hands off me."

I barely used any force—nothing close to a wolf's true strength—but Sophie went down as if I’d struck her. She hit the floor and the hysterics started instantly.

"Sister, I’m so sorry!" she wailed. "I only wanted you to see the clothes! I didn't mean any harm!"

Luke shoved me hard. "Chloe, enough! Sophie spent two nights sewing that for you. A jealous, bitter bitch like you deserves to die alone."

I couldn’t hold it in any longer.I pressed my face into the crook of his neck, breathing in the scent of cedar and rain that was uniquely him."Reno," I whispered. "I want you. I love every single second that you're mine."His entire body went rigid, his heart stuttering against my chest. Then, the words finally landed. He grabbed my face in both hands, his eyes burning with a raw, primal intensity, and kissed me hard. He didn't stop—his mouth moved to my jaw, my neck, trailing fire wherever he touched."Chloe," he growled against my skin. "I love you. I’ve loved you for longer than you can possibly know."Later, when he found out what Luke had tried to pull—dragging me to that dive bar just to sow seeds of doubt—Reno’s control snapped. He nearly drove straight to Luke’s estate to tear him limb from limb.Instead, he caught me in the hallway and backed me against the wall, his frame looming over mine. His voice was low, vibrating with a deadly seriousness as he swore he’d walked into

"So when Luke threw her away for Sophie, he basically handed you the one thing you’ve always wanted.""Reno couldn't have cared less about Luke’s choices," another voice added. "If anything, he made sure Luke had every opportunity to push Chloe straight into his arms."Luke’s face had gone bone-white.He had come here to watch me catch Reno in a betrayal. He wanted proof that Reno was just as rotten as he was—that every Alpha was cut from the same cloth. Instead, he heard the truth, and it knocked every last leg out from under him.Reno’s fixation on me wasn't something Luke could compete with. It had never been a competition; Luke had lost the game before he even knew it had started. He had nothing left.Luke stumbled out of the VIP wing and leaned against the damp wall of the dark corridor, letting out a short, hollow sound that might have been a laugh if it wasn't so broken."Chloe," he whispered, not even looking at me. "You must think I’m pathetic.""I handed you to him on a silve

Sophie’s hysterics started up again, a shrill, broken sound that echoed through the room. Samantha didn't even flinch; she just signaled two of her Warriors, who hauled Sophie out of the building like a piece of unwanted luggage. The scene effectively killed the mood. I left the gathering early, my skin crawling with the sheer desperation of it all.Luke got word of the drama within the hour. Panicked that Sophie would pull another stunt and humiliate him even further in front of me, he did the unthinkable: he locked her in the basement of their estate. For a few days, the world went blissfully quiet. Then, a text buzzed on my phone. It was from Luke.“Reno. Howling Moon Club. Back entrance. Come now.”The Howling Moon was a notorious dive on the edge of the territory—the kind of place where the liquor was cheap and the company was cheaper. When I pulled up to the back alley, I spotted Luke’s black SUV idling in the shadows. He was leaning against the driver’s side door, a sick, triump

His logic was so warped I almost felt sorry for him.I didn't know yet if Reno would be the one to make me happy for the rest of my life. But I knew with absolute certainty that Luke would make me miserable. He was trash. I’d finally seen the rot underneath the golden boy exterior, and I wasn't going back for a second helping.I looked him dead in the eye, my voice dropping to a flat, final tone. "Luke, we’re grown wolves. We own the choices we make. You Marked her. Now go back to her and stay there."Reno looked at Luke like he was something disgusting stuck to the bottom of his boot. "You heard the Luna," he rumbled. "Come near her again, and I’ll take you apart piece by piece."He wrapped a possessive arm around me and walked me through the gate. Luke’s voice cracked as he screamed at our retreating backs."How is this fair, Chloe? We grew up together! You told me you’d be my Luna. You promised!"My steps faltered for a fraction of a second. When I was young and naive, I had said ex

"Wait, didn't Luke throw his entire life away to Mark Sophie?" the first one whispered. "Now he's back on his knees begging for the Luna he dumped?""Men like that are all the same," the other scoffed. "If he can't have it, it's a prize. The second he wins it, it starts to rot."Their voices faded as they moved down the hall.I let out a sharp, dry sound of contempt. Serves him right. The door pushed open and Reno walked in, balancing a loaded breakfast tray. His shirt was unbuttoned, and he looked annoyingly well-rested."Chloe," he mused, a slow smirk tugging at his lips. "You should still be sleeping. I know for a fact I wore you out last night.""I couldn't sleep," I muttered, feeling my face heat up.He sat on the edge of the bed, blew on a spoonful of porridge, and held it to my lips. "Eat. You’re going to need your strength."I took the bite, the silence between us heavy but comfortable. He didn't mention Luke spending the night groveling at our gates, and I didn't ask. From the

Luke shook the man off and lunged for me again. His eyes were wild, desperate—the look of a man drowning."Chloe, please," he begged. "Come with me. I’ll give you anything you want. Just name it."I looked at him, and for the first time in ten years, I felt absolutely nothing. No anger, no longing, just a hollow silence."I want one thing, Luke," I said, my voice steady. "Take Sophie and stay the hell out of my sight. Forever."Luke flinched as if I’d slapped him. He looked like his brain couldn't even process the words. But Reno had officially run out of patience. He gave a sharp tilt of his chin, and two of his Warriors stepped forward, hoisting Luke off the ground by his collar like he was a misbehaving pup.As the motorcycle roared to life and we tore away, Luke’s voice cracked behind us, desperate and raw."Chloe! Don't go!""Chloe, come back!"I didn't look back. Not once. Whatever fire I’d had for him had burned out and gone cold a long time ago.We flew through the territory ro
