LOGINMy entire life was currently a mess. I sat in the formal reception room at Carter’s mansion, my fingers tightly interlaced in my lap to keep them from visibly shaking.
Across from me sat my stepmother, Ashley, alongside my father, Richard.
Ashley had always terrified the crap out of me since I was a child. As a twenty-five-year-old adult, she still terrified me.
She turned electric blue eyes that were identical to Brooke's on me. “Let me give you this warning, Maya. The next time you touch a hair on my daughter or grandson’s head, you’ll lose your hand,” she said in the deadliest tone I had ever heard from her.
I didn’t even bother to defend myself. I had learned over the years that doing that was pointless.
“By the way, I have a small gift for you,” she sneered, scrolled through her phone, and showed me the screen.
I gasped aloud when I saw what she was showing me. It was a photo of my mother in her hospital room.
She looked so confused and helpless, and her face was red and swollen from crying, but that was not what hurt me the most.
What did was the fact that she was bleeding on her forearm and exposed lap … in the exact positions where Brooke had cut Leo and herself yesterday afternoon, but my mother’s cuts looked much deeper. They would clearly need stitches.
“Oh, my goodness! You evil woman! You didn’t!” I exclaimed, my heart shattering into pieces. My poor, poor mother.
“Didn’t what?” Ashley asked with fake innocence.
How did she have this much power to do something like this to my mother in a public space and face no repercussions?
“What has that poor woman done to you? Why would you do this to her? Brooke cut herself and Leo. Why punish my mother for it?”
“Brooke wouldn’t have done that if you had removed yourself from the picture as we told you to, would she? Your mother cut herself, mind you, just as you’re claiming Brooke cut herself. Anyway, that’s not the reason we’re here. Richard, tell her.”
My father cleared his throat and spoke. “We brought you the divorce agreement. Our lawyer drew it up this morning. You’re going to sign those papers, and you’re going to get Carter to sign them too. Your work here is done.”
Ashley reached into her handbag, pulled out a blue folder, and slammed it on the table.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. For the first time in my entire life, I knew I would have to stand up to her. I forced myself to look her dead in the eye.
"I'm not going anywhere or signing anything, Ashley."
She and my father gasped as one. Her mouth opened and closed several times like that of a fish out of water. It would have been comical if it wasn’t for the seriousness of the situation.
"Excuse me?" she exclaimed.
"It’s ridiculous to expect me to pack up and walk away from my marriage simply because Brooke decided to show up after three years. I don’t want to do that."
She burst into mocking, cruel laughter. Then she leaned forward and focused on me like a lion on its prey. I fought the urge to shrink away.
"No one cares what you want, you stupid, useless piece of shit. If you were so interested in remaining in Carter’s life, you should have given him a child, not so? You had three whole years to do that, but you couldn't perform even that simple task.”
“I …”
A malicious glint entered her eyes. "You're barren, Maya … as barren as a desert. You’ve spent almost two years dragging yourself to fertility clinics, trying every treatment imaginable to get pregnant. The doctors confirmed what we all already knew, that the failure lies with you. A man in Carter's position needs an heir. Brooke gave him that. She’ll give him more children. He’ll always choose her over a useless, empty vessel like you."
For the first time in a long time, those words didn’t move me. Before now, I would have been so hurt hearing them.
Instead, a smile stretched across my lips, confusing Ashley.
“Did I crack a joke I wasn’t aware of?” she asked sarcastically.
I ignored the question. "What makes you think Carter would sign those papers? He’s never mentioned divorce to me."
“Oh, honey, trust me when I say he’ll gladly sign it. We spoke with him earlier today. He was completely receptive to the idea. In fact, he explicitly told us to have the agreement drawn up so we can get this whole mess sorted out quickly.”
I didn’t know whether to believe her or not.
“And if I refuse to divorce?" I asked.
My father spoke, his voice devoid of any warmth or paternal affection. "If you refuse, Maya, or if you cause any trouble for Brooke and Leo, I’ll personally sign the order to withdraw funding for your mother’s care at the Sanatorium."
I already knew this was what they would threaten me with. "You... you wouldn't."
"The current payment only covers her stay for the rest of this week. If you don’t do as we say, your mother will be out on the streets by Monday morning. She’ll be confused and unstable, with nowhere to go. I don’t need to tell you how fast she’ll wander off and never be seen again if that happens, and it’ll be your fault. One week, Maya. That's all you have. Also, she might ‘cut herself’ more often, and even more badly if you refuse to sign those papers."
I sighed in defeat as the first tear slipped from my eyes. Was I willing to risk my mother’s safety and cause her pain over a man who didn’t even act like he wanted me?
“Where would I go … if I leave here?” I asked quietly.
Ashley stood up, smoothing her skirt. Her face showed that she knew she had won. “When you leave here, you’ll go live in a studio apartment your father got for you. Think about your mother and her safety, Maya. You’re all she’s got," she finished, giving me one last condescending look.
Without another word, they turned and walked out of the house, leaving me sitting alone, staring down at the blue folder on the table.
My mother wasn’t safe any longer. It was my responsibility to protect her, no matter how much it hurt me.
Carter's POVLeo didn't brighten up on the way home either. When I asked him if he wanted us to get ice cream on the way home, he shook his head quietly."Mom says I'm not to have any ice cream.""Okay, but that's when you're with her, not when you're with me."Still, he shook his head and looked out the window. For the first time ever, it fell on me to carry the conversation. He simply responded with one-word answers, barely smiling. This was quite concerning for a child who laughed a lot, both at funny things and things that weren't even the slightest bit funny. Then when we got home, he wouldn't touch his dinner either. "What's wrong, bud?" I finally asked, crouching in front of him where he sat curled up small on the couch. At first he claimed that nothing was wrong, but I could see his lips quiver and noticed that he was desperately trying to hold back his tears.I didn't give up until he broke down crying. "Please, Daddy, don't let her take me. I don't want to go. Please, Dadd
Carter's POVMy phone was ringing off the hook, but I couldn't focus on work. The digital notification from my lawyers had been open on my screen for over thirty minutes: Intent to Relocate. I had read it over and again, unable to believe that Brooke was serious, despite her visit the other day. It was crazy to think that she had actually filed it.Of course, I was going to challenge it, but after being bitten in the ass countless times by the system, I wasn't sure I trusted them to work in my favor. Finally, after I got over my initial shock, I called Brooke. She let the phone ring for a long time before she picked up."What exactly do you think you're doing?" I asked without preamble.“Oh, I’m just packing up my stuff. Why? Did you need something?” she said with fake innocence.“What’s the meaning of this nonsense I received?”"Don't act so offended, Carter. I already gave you a heads-up, didn't I? I’m finally taking charge of my life for once. You should actually be proud of me. Y
Brooke’s POVThere it was. I'd been counting on him asking that… praying he would ask it. I nearly sagged in relief, but I kept myself in check and shrugged as if I actually didn't care one way or the other. "My parents' company is drowning. It has been drowning for quite a while now. That's their only source of livelihood and what they know how to do. That's the easiest place I could get the best job for me as well as the best pay. You could help them. Sign a restructuring deal with them and bring the company under Davis Group; you know, get the company stable again. Also, I want you to reinstate my allowance… the real one, not whatever scraps you've been sending. As you well know, the cost of living has gone up, and Leo is already used to a certain lifestyle. I have to maintain that lifestyle."Something flickered across his face, disbelief giving way to something worse. It almost looked like hatred. Well, too bad. Carter could hate me all he wanted, but he had to give in to my
Brooke’s POVI did the only thing left to do… I went to see Carter. I drove straight to his office and walked into the building, ignoring the not-so-subtle stares of his employees.Ever since that day when Carter had me dragged out of here kicking and screaming, most of them seemed to have lost respect for me.It was all his fault. If he couldn't treat the mother of his child with dignity, why would his employees do so? Of course, they dared not disrespect me to my face. But I could feel their eyes boring holes into my back nonetheless. I could hear them sniggering softly when I passed. God, I hated all of them. If my plan worked, which I hoped to God that it would, I would make their lives a living hell… all of them!Whatever I had been about to say died in my throat when I got to Carter's office and shoved open the door without knocking. Maya was in the office with him.Of course, she was. That scheming whore. I had known right from the onset that this contract shit was just an ex
Maya's POVLucas was already seated when I arrived. I gave him a quick hug and a kiss on both cheeks and sat down."Okay," he said, the second I sat down. "What's going on? I could feel your panic over your text."I wrapped both hands around my glass to stop them from shaking. "You won't guess what happened today.”“Really? What happened?”“I ran into Brooke at Ethan’s school today.”His eyes widened, then he shrugged. “Well, that was bound to happen sooner or later. So what did she say?”“She didn’t see me.”“Oh, I see.”“Yeah, but that’s not all. I need your honest opinion about something.”“Sure. What’s that?”“It’s about telling Carter about Ethan… and vice versa if he responds favorably to him. And no, this isn’t about me becoming soft towards Carter or anything like that… far from it, but telling Carter about his son has been weighing on my mind lately.”The words hung in the air. Lucas went very still, carefully weighing his words before he spoke them aloud. As far as I could r
Brooke's POVWe had gone to her house, which was a dump I couldn't wait to leave. Empty packs of food lay strewn around, and there was a musty smell in the air.On our way there, she told me what had happened in the past few days. Apparently, after beating me to a stupor, that old lecher, who had always had such a fiery temper, even while he was still pretending to be nice to me, left the compound with his friend in a fit of anger. They got into his car and drove off, then they promptly got into an accident not up to ten minutes later, in which they both perished on the spot.I was fiercely glad when she told me this. In a way, I was responsible for his death, and the knowledge of this made me happy as hell. That was what he got for daring to lay his filthy old hands on me. She also informed me that the woman who had me thrown out today was his wife, and they had been married for several years. The woman knew about everything that went on in that compound and didn't care because she
