Chapter 1

The wedding ring hit the side of Charles Moretti's shoe and rolled under the car.

Charles’ face hardened. He looked up and glared at me.

"Pick it up, Selena."

"Let’s get a divorce. I don't need this ring anymore."

Susie Graham clutched her chest, her eyes red as she coughed twice. "Don Moretti, forget it. Selena was scared earlier, so it’s normal for her to lose control of her emotions."

The more reasonable she acted, the angrier Charles became.

"Apologize!" He took a step toward me. "You know how much Susie has done for the family! She risked getting hurt to treat you, and you physically attacked her?"

I looked at him, tears sliding down my cheeks.

Six months ago, my elbows were scraped raw, and my voice was hoarse from screaming when a gang from a rival family dragged me into an abandoned wine cellar.

When Charles found me, he held me and said, "I will protect you forever. No one will ever get close enough to hurt you again."

I guessed his idea of protection was letting Susie wrap her hands around my throat, and then forcing me to apologize for defending myself.

"I won't apologize!" I wiped away my tears and looked straight into his eyes. "She attacked me, and I fought back. What did I do wrong?!"

Charles' jaw tightened in anger.

Susie sighed softly and picked up the rose petals scattered on the ground. "Don Moretti handpicked every single one of these roses himself and made the necklace. Selena, he loves you so much. How can you treat him like this?"

Charles grabbed the velvet box hidden in the bouquet and shoved it into Susie’s arms.

"If she doesn't want it, then it's yours!"

Susie froze. She immediately said it was "inappropriate", but her hands tightly gripped the box.

I opened my mouth to speak, but Charles bent down and picked her up into his arms, his voice icy. "I’m taking you home to treat your injuries."

He carried Susie right past me without giving me a single glance.

I stood there, the red marks on my neck throbbing with pain. After a long time, I stepped over the ruined rose petals and went upstairs alone.

Light shone through the crack of the master bedroom door. Susie’s coat was scattered on the floor.

A member of the household staff at the end of the hallway murmured to me, "Donna, Don Moretti said you should stay in the guest room tonight."

I laughed softly. I didn't expect to have to give up even my own room to Susie.

Passing by the study, Charles' laptop screen was on. It was playing the surveillance video from the garage earlier, zooming in repeatedly on my terrified, struggling face.

In the chat window, the psychiatrist had just sent a message. [The patient exhibits acute feigned fear tendency. High-pressure desensitization is recommended.]

Charles replied, [Give me the complete plan.]

My hands shook so hard I couldn't control the mouse. It turned out today’s anniversary surprise was just a test.

Furious, I took a screenshot of the conversation and rushed to the master bedroom to confront Charles.

As soon as I reached the door, I saw a scene that filled me with despair.

Susie was leaning against the headboard, wearing my silk nightgown. Charles, on the other hand, sat on the edge of the bed, carefully applying medicine to the swollen red marks on her chest.

"Does it hurt? I'll be gentler..." He frowned, his voice softer than I had ever heard before.

Susie shifted against him, a gleam in her voice. "Next time, let the hounds chase her. After all, that's what she's terrified of most."

Charles agreed, but not before excusing himself. "Sure. After all, it's for her mental health, right?"

I wanted to rush in and drag her off my bed, but Charles' words froze me in place.

For my mental health? Setting the hounds I feared most to bite me was for my mental health?

I instantly lost all strength to rush in. Instead, I dialed the number of my father's old right-hand man, Marco Ricci.

"Marco, I want to leave Ironvale."

He was silent for a moment. "Charles won't let you go."

"So we need to make him think I'm dead."

Marco paused, dropping his voice. "It'll take seven days at the earliest to prepare the route and a body double. But are you sure?"

I looked at the two inside the room and nodded.

"I'm sure."

The next day, as I was packing my bags, Charles pushed the door open and walked in.

He had changed into a dark suit and held a new bouquet of roses.

"I was rude yesterday." He set the flowers down. "I booked a table at the restaurant where we first met. Will you give me a chance to apologize to you properly?"

I stared at him for a long time. His eyes were very gentle, and it almost made me forget his attitude yesterday.

"Okay," I said.

At the restaurant, he cut my steak, reminisced about how embarrassed I’d been when I spilled red wine on our first date, and promised me the world.

Just as my tense nerves relaxed, his tone shifted. "Selena, to have that kind of future, you need to learn to be brave first."

The kitchen door was pushed open. Several hounds rushed out, drool dripping on the floor as they growled at me.

The glass door of the restaurant slammed shut and locked. Charles had already stepped outside long ago.

I rushed over and pounded on the door. "Charles, open the door! Please!"

He stood behind the glass, his expression terrifyingly cold. "Stop acting. I won't help you this time. Be brave, you can fight them off yourself!"

Susie threw raw meat at my feet. Smelling it, the hounds lunged at me. I screamed, trying to break the glass door.

Even as my back was soaked by the hounds' foul drool, I didn't care. Finally, with a loud bang, the glass was broken.

I was dizzy from the shock, but my mind was still calmly calculating: 'Six days left until I leave.'

Before my eyes went completely dark, I only saw Charles standing where he was, not moving a single step.

The snow in Harborwick had just stopped. My father's old estate was built halfway up the mountain, with a clear view of the lake outside the window. The water was a deep, striking blue, and the distant mountain peaks were capped with white snow. As the fireplace crackled, Marco placed the copper key into my palm."Everything in the safe is the full inheritance left to you by your father."I gripped the key tightly and whispered, "I will definitely protect it."Our people were waiting for me in the conference room. The port manager, the casino directors, and the executives of each major company were all sitting straight and formal. The moment I walked in, they stood up in unison. "Principessa."In that single second, my footsteps paused. No one called me Charles’ wife or asked if I was scared again. They recognized only me as Selena Black.I took my seat at the head of the table and flipped open the ledger. "Renegotiate all the old contracts at the port. Recalculate the casino r

At midnight, the official websites of major companies under the Moretti family updated with a single announcement page. Right at the top of the home page was a single sentence.[Official Disclosure of Evidence Regarding Susie Graham's Attempted Murder of Selena Moretti.]I sat in my office, watching Marco hit the publish button.Within ten minutes of posting, the comment section exploded."Using someone's kidnapping trauma for a sick test? What a monster.""Charles allowed that garage incident to happen? And he says he loves her?""Setting dogs on a woman suffering from kidnapping trauma… Charles needs to get kicked out of the Moretti family too!""Susie and Charles deserve each other—one is vicious, and the other is blind!""Thank goodness Selena came back alive. I hope she thoroughly settles scores with this awful pair!"I read through them line by line before closing the webpage.I had waited six whole months for people to finally see what I went through, but inside, I fel

In the warehouse district of the Ironvale port, both sides of the long table were packed with people. The moment I pushed the door open, everyone turned to look at me in unison."Selena?""Isn't she dead?""Is that a ghost?"Listening to everyone's doubts, I cleared my throat. "Selena Moretti is indeed dead. Standing in front of you right now is Selena Black."Hearing this, everyone stood up."Principessa." The voices fell in neat unison.Marco pulled out the chair at the head of the table for me. I sat down and flipped open the ledger in front of me. "Starting today, port revenue will be redistributed according to my father's original bylaws."The few people around the table exchanged glances, but said nothing.I raised my head. "Any objections? Anyone with an objection can leave right now!"Everyone lowered their heads; no one stood up. Only one man asked in a low voice, "What about Charles...""Charles can manage his Moretti family. He has no say over the assets of the Bl

The next day, Charles slammed Susie’s bank statements down in front of her."It was you! You paid the hitman, making him actually try to kill Selena!"Color drained from Susie’s face. She lunged forward, clawing desperately at his shirt."No, that’s not true, Charles! I was only trying to help cure Selena! That man had been locked away so long, he didn't have the guts to kill anyone anymore. I only gave him money to make the act look realistic, to help Selena finally break free!"Charles looked down at her, the suffocating aura radiating off him making it hard to even breathe."An act?""Yes," Susie sobbed, nodding frantically. "I did it all for the family! I'm sad Selena is dead, too, but the family needs a donna. I'll be more obedient and sensible than her, and I can take a lot of weight off your shoulders."As she spoke, she tried to make her way into Charles' arms, but Charles abruptly kicked his foot out, shoving her away."Get out! When she died, you didn't shed a single

I was escorted into the car by Marco. Sitting in the backseat, I watched the surveillance monitor as real-time feeds from the estate flickered across the screen frame by frame. On the rain-soaked gravel of the garage, Charles was on the ground, clutching the corpse covered in a white sheet."Selena!"He screamed my name over and over until his voice turned hoarse. But the person in his arms would never answer him again. His men stood around him in a tight perimeter, none of them brave enough to step closer.Charles raised his head, his eyes bloodshot. "Lock down the estate! Find that hitman! Bring him to me dead or alive!"I sat in front of the monitor holding a cup of coffee, watching his descent into madness. The coffee grew cold in my hands, untouched.Driving up front, Marco asked in a low voice, "Principessa, should I turn off the monitor?"I nodded slightly, then turned my gaze toward the window. On the third day, the estate held a funeral. The Moretti family never held

On the day of the banquet, three days later, Marco was waiting at the side door to meet me. "The body double is already secured at the safe house. Your fake ID and liquid funds are all set."With only six hours left until my departure, I handed him my luggage. He looked at me and asked, "Have you really thought this through?""I have," I replied. "Starting today, Selena Black is dead."Marco took the suitcase, his eyes turning red. "Don't worry. I'll be guarding the exit here."By the time Charles walked over, Marco had already left.Dressed in a silver-gray suit just like on our wedding day, Charles stepped up in front of me and personally pulled up my zipper."When tonight is over, you'll reclaim your rightful place as donna."I looked at myself in the mirror. "How are you testing me tonight? Will you stay by my side?"Charles fell silent for a moment, then placed an earpiece into my ear."You must learn to face danger alone. I can't tell you in advance, nor can I stay by yo
