Chapter 2

작가: Snowy Juniper
When I woke up, there was no one by my bed. My throat burned with dryness, so I pushed myself up to get out of bed.

Just as I walked into the living area, I found Charles on the sofa, leaning over to wrap a bandage around Susie’s wrist. His movements were gentle, his brows tightly furrowed.

"Does it hurt?"

"It's alright." Susie was wearing my pajamas. She raised her eyes, saw me, and immediately put on an aggrieved expression. "Selena must have been so scared. That's why she hurt me. You mustn't blame her."

Hearing this, Charles grew impatient. "You don't need to make excuses for her. I know she did it on purpose..."

At his words, the glass slipped from my hand and shattered against the floor. Charles looked up at me, his face instantly darkening.

"Good. You're awake." He walked over and threw a psychological evaluation report and two video recordings down in front of me.

In the video, I crashed through the glass and fell to the ground. Susie hypocritically tried to help me up, but the moment she touched me, she clutched her wrist with a sharp cry.

The conclusion on the report was glaring. [The donna's fear response is exaggerated, suggesting feigned vulnerability to gain attention.]

"This is a professional judgment given by the doctor," Charles said coldly. "Your so-called trauma, most of the time, is just you acting! You're only doing this to hide the fact that you're a coward and refusing to take on the responsibilities a donna should bear!"

I stared at that line of text, my fingers tightening bit by bit. "You believe this?"

"I believe evidence." He stood up. "Starting today, you must accept the special training arranged by the family."

"Can I refuse?"

Charles looked at me, his tone leaving no room for argument. "A donna can never refuse to become stronger!"

Looking at his firm gaze, I knew that as long as I stayed here, I would never be able to resist his orders. So I accepted my fate and let Susie lead me to the training ground at the back of the estate, comforting myself that it was almost over. Soon I would be free from this kind of life.

She stood by the iron gate, raising her hand to signal two masked men to enter the field.

They held leashed wolves, short blades in their hands, closing in step by step. Although I knew this was just training, the sound of iron chains in the wine cellar still echoed in my ears. My fingers gradually lost feeling, and my breathing grew faster.

"Continue," Susie said. "Get a little closer."

The wolves strained against their chains and lunged at me, while the masked men charged toward me at the same time. I stared fixedly at the exit, forcing myself to steady my breathing.

When the blade forced its way before my eyes, I dodged to the side, grabbed the man's wrist, and used his momentum to knock the knife down hard. The masked man collapsed with a grunt of pain. I kicked him aside, spun around, and bolted for the exit.

Susie’s face instantly changed. "Stop!"

I didn't stop and instead rushed straight out.

Charles arrived just in time. Seeing the training staff lying on the ground, his first words were: "Why did you hurt him?"

I froze for a moment. "Didn't you tell me to fight back?"

Susie, however, had a look of deep worry on her face. "An excellent donna should remain calm in the face of danger, but her reaction is too dangerous. Today was just training, but if she attacks family members like this in the future, what then?"

Charles was silent for a moment, then nodded and ordered, "Suspend her permission to go out, and hand her phone over to security for safekeeping."

I wanted to protest. After all, I had done exactly what he asked, so why was he treating me like a prisoner?

Despite my violent struggling, I was still escorted back to the bedroom. Two guards were stationed outside the room, and even seeing a doctor required Charles’ permission.

I used the excuse of needing to change my dressing to have Marco deliver a new prescription. When Marco handed me the medical supply kit, his fingers tapped the base twice—the signal that a secure burner phone was concealed inside.

That night, I pulled up the estate's security map and found an abandoned escape route in the underground wine cellar. A message from Marco also came through.

[Everything is ready. When do we act?]

Without a second thought, I replied, [Wait until the next time he tests me. Let him taste what it feels like when everything spirals out of control.]

I tucked the engagement brooch Charles had given me into the very back of the drawer. Just then, he happened to push open the door and walk in, his tone unusually gentle.

"As long as you cooperate with the special training, I will stay by your side and help you become the most perfect donna."

I looked at him. "What if I can never become the perfect donna?"

He thought I was finally softening, reaching out to drape an arm around my shoulders. "That's not an option. I'm not going to let you run away."

I kept silent.

  • The Way Out Is Death   Chapter 9

The snow in Harborwick had just stopped. My father's old estate was built halfway up the mountain, with a clear view of the lake outside the window. The water was a deep, striking blue, and the distant mountain peaks were capped with white snow. As the fireplace crackled, Marco placed the copper key into my palm."Everything in the safe is the full inheritance left to you by your father."I gripped the key tightly and whispered, "I will definitely protect it."Our people were waiting for me in the conference room. The port manager, the casino directors, and the executives of each major company were all sitting straight and formal. The moment I walked in, they stood up in unison. "Principessa."In that single second, my footsteps paused. No one called me Charles’ wife or asked if I was scared again. They recognized only me as Selena Black.I took my seat at the head of the table and flipped open the ledger. "Renegotiate all the old contracts at the port. Recalculate the casino r

At midnight, the official websites of major companies under the Moretti family updated with a single announcement page. Right at the top of the home page was a single sentence.[Official Disclosure of Evidence Regarding Susie Graham's Attempted Murder of Selena Moretti.]I sat in my office, watching Marco hit the publish button.Within ten minutes of posting, the comment section exploded."Using someone's kidnapping trauma for a sick test? What a monster.""Charles allowed that garage incident to happen? And he says he loves her?""Setting dogs on a woman suffering from kidnapping trauma… Charles needs to get kicked out of the Moretti family too!""Susie and Charles deserve each other—one is vicious, and the other is blind!""Thank goodness Selena came back alive. I hope she thoroughly settles scores with this awful pair!"I read through them line by line before closing the webpage.I had waited six whole months for people to finally see what I went through, but inside, I fel

In the warehouse district of the Ironvale port, both sides of the long table were packed with people. The moment I pushed the door open, everyone turned to look at me in unison."Selena?""Isn't she dead?""Is that a ghost?"Listening to everyone's doubts, I cleared my throat. "Selena Moretti is indeed dead. Standing in front of you right now is Selena Black."Hearing this, everyone stood up."Principessa." The voices fell in neat unison.Marco pulled out the chair at the head of the table for me. I sat down and flipped open the ledger in front of me. "Starting today, port revenue will be redistributed according to my father's original bylaws."The few people around the table exchanged glances, but said nothing.I raised my head. "Any objections? Anyone with an objection can leave right now!"Everyone lowered their heads; no one stood up. Only one man asked in a low voice, "What about Charles...""Charles can manage his Moretti family. He has no say over the assets of the Bl

The next day, Charles slammed Susie’s bank statements down in front of her."It was you! You paid the hitman, making him actually try to kill Selena!"Color drained from Susie’s face. She lunged forward, clawing desperately at his shirt."No, that’s not true, Charles! I was only trying to help cure Selena! That man had been locked away so long, he didn't have the guts to kill anyone anymore. I only gave him money to make the act look realistic, to help Selena finally break free!"Charles looked down at her, the suffocating aura radiating off him making it hard to even breathe."An act?""Yes," Susie sobbed, nodding frantically. "I did it all for the family! I'm sad Selena is dead, too, but the family needs a donna. I'll be more obedient and sensible than her, and I can take a lot of weight off your shoulders."As she spoke, she tried to make her way into Charles' arms, but Charles abruptly kicked his foot out, shoving her away."Get out! When she died, you didn't shed a single

I was escorted into the car by Marco. Sitting in the backseat, I watched the surveillance monitor as real-time feeds from the estate flickered across the screen frame by frame. On the rain-soaked gravel of the garage, Charles was on the ground, clutching the corpse covered in a white sheet."Selena!"He screamed my name over and over until his voice turned hoarse. But the person in his arms would never answer him again. His men stood around him in a tight perimeter, none of them brave enough to step closer.Charles raised his head, his eyes bloodshot. "Lock down the estate! Find that hitman! Bring him to me dead or alive!"I sat in front of the monitor holding a cup of coffee, watching his descent into madness. The coffee grew cold in my hands, untouched.Driving up front, Marco asked in a low voice, "Principessa, should I turn off the monitor?"I nodded slightly, then turned my gaze toward the window. On the third day, the estate held a funeral. The Moretti family never held

On the day of the banquet, three days later, Marco was waiting at the side door to meet me. "The body double is already secured at the safe house. Your fake ID and liquid funds are all set."With only six hours left until my departure, I handed him my luggage. He looked at me and asked, "Have you really thought this through?""I have," I replied. "Starting today, Selena Black is dead."Marco took the suitcase, his eyes turning red. "Don't worry. I'll be guarding the exit here."By the time Charles walked over, Marco had already left.Dressed in a silver-gray suit just like on our wedding day, Charles stepped up in front of me and personally pulled up my zipper."When tonight is over, you'll reclaim your rightful place as donna."I looked at myself in the mirror. "How are you testing me tonight? Will you stay by my side?"Charles fell silent for a moment, then placed an earpiece into my ear."You must learn to face danger alone. I can't tell you in advance, nor can I stay by yo
