I stared at the mirror one last time, trying to steady my breathing. Midnight was close. The moment every wolf dreamed of. The night I would find my mate.
My eighteenth birthday.
The dress I wore was plain, but I’d done my best to smooth my hair, to hide the exhaustion from years of chores and humiliation. My wolf was restless inside me, pacing, howling, sensing what was coming.
“Oh, look who it is,” a sneering voice cut through my thoughts.
I didn’t even need to turn. Lily. My ever perfect stepsister.
“The ugly duckling, trying so hard for her Prince Charming,” she mocked, arms crossed, her smirk wide enough to split her face.
I turned slowly, meeting her eyes. “Get your ashy ass out of my room, Lily. I don’t have time for your tantrums tonight.”
Her cheeks flared red instantly. Good. Hit a nerve.
“Prepare to be disappointed,” she shot back. “Who knows who your mate will be? Some filthy rogue? Or maybe another weak omega like you. At least then you’ll be a matching pair of losers.”
Her words cut, sharp as a blade. I swallowed hard, refusing to let her see.
“At least I’m not the pack slut,” I said sweetly, my lips curling into a smirk.
Her face twisted, rage clouding her features. “How dare you—” She slapped me so hard my head whipped sideways.
For a moment, the sting burned. But I lifted my chin, stepped closer until my eyes locked on hers. “Hit me again, and I’ll skin you alive. Don’t you dare ruin my night, Lily.”
Her eyes flickered, shocked at the venom in my tone. For once, she didn’t have a comeback. I shoved past her and stormed out.
Ugly duckling? No.
I was beautiful, and I knew it. Everyone did. But my status as an omega, my lack of power, those were the chains they used to mock me, to break me down. Not tonight. Not anymore.
The ceremony grounds were glowing with torches, music vibrating in the air. Wolves laughed and cheered, girls in silks, boys already posturing with dominance. Mating season at its peak.
And then, at the stroke of midnight, my world shifted.
My wolf howled inside me, a sound so powerful it nearly buckled my knees. Mate.
The word echoed, filling me, pulling me forward. My senses sharpened. A scent, rich, masculine, intoxicating, wrapped around me.
I followed it, heart thundering, breath short. Step after step until—
I collided with a chest. Hard.
The scent slammed into me stronger than before, and when I looked up, the world tilted.
Him.
Ares. The alpha’s son. My soon to be Alpha.
My mate.
His stormy eyes widened as recognition flashed. For one heartbeat, I thought maybe, just maybe, this was fate smiling on me.
Then his lip curled.
“No.” His voice was low, sharp, and full of disgust. “No, no, no. You can’t be my mate.”
My stomach dropped. “What… what are you saying?”
“You’re a filthy omega,” he growled, loud enough for those around to hear. “Weak. Worthless. How could i be mated with a weakling like you?”
Gasps rippled. Snickers followed. Eyes burned into me, cruel and mocking.
My wolf whimpered, clawing at me. Mate. Mate.
“No… please, no…” Tears burned my eyes, but I blinked them back.
“I, Ares, son of the Alpha and future Alpha of this pack,” he said coldly, his voice carrying through the crowd, “reject you, Raven, as my mate and future Luna.”
The words cut through me like silver. Pain exploded in my chest, searing, ripping my heart in half. My knees trembled.
The crowd roared with laughter. Whispers spread like wildfire.
“Did you hear that? Rejected!”
“Who would want her?” “Pathetic omega.”Ares smirked, satisfied. He thought he’d crushed me.
But he hadn’t.
I lifted my head, locking my gaze with his. My voice shook, but it carried. “I, Raven, accept your rejection.”
Gasps echoed.
“She… she accepted it?”
“She actually had the guts.” “She’ll regret this.”The pain doubled, my chest on fire as the bond shattered. But I refused to look away. For the first time ever, I met Ares’s eyes without fear.
He stiffened. Just a flicker but I saw it.
“Wow,” someone muttered. “Even weak omegas got balls, huh?”
“She’s still just a bitch,” another spat.
I turned on them, spotting a girl in the crowd, the same one whose mate had cheated on her last year. “Even you,” I said, voice dripping venom, “with your cheating mate, have the balls to talk about me? Sit down before I remind everyone how pathetic you looked.”
Her mouth snapped shut, shock flashing across her face.
That was enough. I turned and ran, my wolf howling in grief, my vision blurred with tears. My chest burned with the agony of rejection, the laughter still ringing in my ears.
I had been humiliated. Destroyed. Rejected in front of everyone.
I crashed through my bedroom door, falling onto my bed, sobs shaking me. The bond was gone, ripped from me, leaving me empty.
Moments later, the door creaked. Lily strolled in, her laugh shrill and cruel.
“Well, well, well. The infamous omega, rejected and humiliated.” She leaned on the doorframe, smugness oozing off her. “I told you, Raven. And now? Watch me take Ares for myself. The Alpha’s son deserves a real Luna. Not trash.”
I glared at her through my tears, my fists clenched.
Then my stepmother entered, her heels clicking against the floor. Her eyes raked over me with disgust.
“I heard,” she said with a cruel smile. “Rejected. Pathetic. I warned you. You should’ve stayed hidden. Now look at you, shamed, unwanted. You’ll never be accepted anywhere, Raven. Never.”
She laughed, and Lily joined her, their voices slicing through me like knives.
When they finally left, the room was silent.
I buried my face in my pillow, sobbing until my throat ached. My wolf whined low inside me, broken but alive.
Rejected. Alone.
But somewhere, deep in the hollow pain, a spark lit.
This wasn’t the end.
It was only the beginning.
Raven's POVThe noise outside their dorm was loud enough to shake the walls. Screams, growls, and heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. My heart hammered so fast I thought it might rip out of my chest. Monica and I froze, listening.“What’s happening?” I whispered.“I don’t know,” Monica said, her eyes wide, her fangs twitching out in fear.We listened harder. Then came it, a voice. Deep. Cold. Familiar.“Open the door.”I went still. My stomach dropped. I knew that voice.Monica’s face turned pale. “It’s… Prince Hades.”Before I could say a word, she hurried to the door and opened it.He stood there, the dragon prince himself. His tall frame filled the doorway like a storm. In his grip was the dark beast, lifted clean off the ground by the scruff of his neck. The beast’s claws scratched helplessly at Hades’s arm, but the prince didn’t even flinch.“Don’t let me see you in this dorm again,” Hades said, his voice low and deadly. The beast nodded, terrified. The moment Hades dropped him
Raven POVWhen I thought there was no escape, when I thought I’d die right there in that room, his cold, deep voice broke through the air.“Leave.”I froze, thinking I’d imagined it. “Huh?”He looked at me, his eyes sharp as blades. “I said leave.”I didn’t wait for him to change his mind. My heart jumped into my throat as I bolted out of the room. My legs barely kept up with me.This school is insane. Everyone here is insane. How can they just go around claiming girls like they’re property?I can’t let anyone touch me. I can’t belong to anyone.Never.I ran straight to the low rank dorms, my chest burning, my legs aching. Finally, I slammed the door shut behind me and sank to the floor. At least here, I could breathe.Moments later, Monica rushed in, her eyes wide with curiosity.“Did you get in any trouble?” she asked, panting.I laughed bitterly. “Yeah. Trouble I didn’t even ask for. First, a vampire prince dragged me into his room and tried to claim me. Then some girl came in and
Raven’s POVA loud bang on the door made me jump. Azrael froze above me, his fangs out, his eyes glowing blood red. He turned toward the sound, shoulders tense, the predator in him ready to snap. That was my chance. My chest rose and fell like I had been running for hours. I slid off his bed in a rush, my legs almost giving out.The door swung open. A female vampire stepped in. She was tall, elegant, deadly beautiful, everything that screamed royal. Her eyes locked on me instantly, and the disgust on her face made my stomach twist.“Having fun with a filth?” she sneered. My face burned hot. I wanted the floor to open and swallow me whole.Azrael growled low, annoyed, but didn’t hide his fangs. “You know the rules, Azrael,” she said sharply, ignoring me. “No other species. There are plenty of low rank vampires here you can play with.”Her tone dripped with mockery, like I was nothing. Less than nothing.Azrael rolled his eyes, bored of her words. His gaze cut back to me, and it sent sh
Azrael’s POVI stood in the corner of the upstairs corridor, leaning lazily against the wall, watching the chaos of students rushing about. Their scents mixed together—wolf, fae, witch, shifter, each one ordinary, dull. None of them interested me.Until my eyes found her.Good Lord. She was beautiful in a way that hurt to look at. Pale skin that almost glowed under the dim torchlight, hair that shimmered like strands of silk. Her presence was delicate, otherworldly. She looked like she had stepped straight out of a fairy tale. And when I inhaled deeply, I caught it.Fae.But not fully.Half blood. A hybrid. My lips curled into a slow, wicked grin. Hybrids were rare. Dangerous. Precious. And the scent rolling off her made my throat burn. My gaze fell on her neck, so soft, so inviting. What would it take for me to sink my fangs into her? To bite deep and taste the blood rushing through her veins? The thought made my fangs slip down, sharp and ready.I always get what I want. And right n
Raven’s POVWhen I opened my eyes, everything was dark. A single light flickered weakly in the corner, shadows crawling across the stone walls. My heart jumped, and I bolted upright on the bed.Where was I?The last thing I remembered was the blinding flash, the pain splitting through my head, and then collapsing outside the academy gates. Now… this.A sound came from the far corner of the room. My eyes darted there, and I spotted a figure standing in the dark, holding something. My chest tightened until he moved closer. It wasn’t a man. It was a boy. He looked no older than sixteen, tall for his age, with sharp features and a book in his hand. His eyes glowed faintly in the dim light, almost regal.“Who are you?” I asked, my voice shaking. He stopped right beside my bed, calm and collected. “I’m Ace. Nice to have you here in Rivaldrelle. You slumped outside. I had you brought into one of my rooms.”“Oh… I—I’m sorry,” I stammered.Up close, he looked like royalty. His clothes were fin
Raven POVI didn’t sleep that night. My mind kept running in circles until dawn finally broke. When I did close my eyes, it was only for a short while. The peace didn’t last.A loud bang on my door jolted me awake. Not a knock. A bang. My heart jumped. I slid out of bed, my body heavy, and opened the door, only to get slapped so hard my head snapped to the left.Pain burned across my cheek.I turned back and locked eyes with the last person I wanted to see, my stepmother and Lily. Her eyes were wild, her chest rising and falling fast.“You bitch!” she screamed. “How could you? How could you do that?”My cheek throbbed. “Do what?” I asked, still half in shock.“You dare question me?” She grabbed my arm like a claw and yanked me into the hall.I stumbled, confused, until I saw the pack guards waiting. My stomach twisted. And then I saw him. Ares. My heart fell into my feet. Behind them stood a man I’d never seen before, dressed too neatly, he looked like some kind of professor.“There s
