Chapter Six: she is my mate!

The heavy thud of the oak door closing shut echoed like a gavel in the quiet room. Outside, the muffled rustle of leather, the clink of armor, and the low, synchronized breathing of four Elite Sentinels instantly formed an impenetrable barrier between me and the rest of the world.

For a long time, I didn't move. I stayed exactly where Silas had left me, curled under the heavy furs, staring at the empty space beside the bed.

The scent of him earth, winter forest, and that deep, intoxicating musk still hung thick in the air, wrapping around me like a physical embrace.

“This mate is different,”* Nala whispered again in my mind, her voice stronger now, vibrating with a fierce pride that sent a thrill of warmth straight to my chest.

"He is," I agreed silently, my fingers trembling as I touched the spot on my forehead where his hand had rested. "But he is going to war for us, Nala."

The thought should have sent me into a spiral of panic. Back in the Iron Claw pack, an Alpha’s wrath was something to be feared, a volatile storm that broke anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in its wake. Kaelen’s anger was cold, cruel, and precise. But Silas’s fury wasn't a weapon meant to crush me; it was a fortress built to protect me.

Down below, the distant, collective howl of the Northern Pack began to fade, settling into a tense, heavy silence that stretched across the courtyard. The parley was beginning.

I couldn't just lie here. The habit of survival, burned into my soul through days of torment, refused to let me remain blind to the danger at the gates.

Carefully, I threw back the heavy furs and swung my legs over the edge of the mattress. My feet hit the cold stone floor, and a sharp tingle shot up my calves. I paused, waiting for the agonizing scream of my silver-poisoned flesh, but it never came. The deep, agonizing burn on my back had truly withered away into nothing more than a tight, healing ache.

The healer’s poultice had done wonders, but as I stood up, anchoring my weight, I knew it was Silas’s proximity that had truly anchored my soul.

I caught sight of myself in the full-length gilded mirror near the wardrobe. I was wearing a soft, oversized tunic that clearly belonged to Silas, the hem falling past my knees. I looked small, pale, and swallowed by his shadow but my eyes were different. The hollow, dead look Kaelen had beaten into me was gone. In its place was a flicker of something raw. Something unbroken.

Stepping softly, I crept toward the heavy glass windows that overlooked the main courtyard and the massive iron gates of the Northern citadel.

Pressing my hands against the cool glass, I looked down.

The sight stole the breath from my lungs.

The Northern Pack didn't just guard their borders; they commanded them. Dozens of massive, battle-hardened warriors stood in perfect, silent formation, their eyes locked onto the front gates. And standing at the very center, his dark cape catching the bitter northern wind, was Silas.

Even from this height, his aura was visible. a shimmering, oppressive wave of dominant power that forced the air out of the courtyard.

Across the threshold of the open gate stood the Iron Claw messenger. He was a high ranking enforcer, a man I recognized all too well from Kaelen’s inner circle: Captain Vance. Vance was a brutal man, accustomed to throwing his weight around, but right now, standing before the Lycan Alpha, he looked painfully small. His posture was rigid, his shoulders tense, and his hands were clenched so tightly around the white flag of parley that his knuckles were white.

Silas didn't descend the steps to meet him. He forced Vance to speak from the dirt.

"Alpha Silas," Vance’s voice drifted up, carried by the wind, strained but projecting the arrogant script Kaelen had given him. "I speak on behalf of Alpha Kaelen of the Iron Claw. We do not wish for a territorial dispute with the North. We ask only for what is legally ours. An Omega slave, branded and bound to our pack, has fled justice after assaulting her master. Return her, and our packs remain at peace."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the courtyard. I held my breath, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Silas didn't yell. He didn't roar. When he spoke, his voice was a low, terrifying purr that cut through the wind like a honed blade.

"You stand in my home," Silas said, stepping down just one single, deliberate stair. "You breathe my air. And you dare use the word 'property' to describe a wolf who sought sanctuary under my sky?"

"She is a criminal—" Vance started, his voice cracking.

"She is my mate!" Silas’s voice boomed, a sudden, explosive crack of thunder that made Vance stumble back a full step. The Northern warriors shifted in unison, a synchronized growl rippling through the ranks. Silas’s violet eyes caught the weak sunlight, glowing with lethal ancient blood. "Your Alpha tracks her like a beast of burden because he is too blind, too weak, and too cowardly to recognize what she truly is. Go back to Kaelen. Tell him that the Iron Claw has no jurisdiction in the frost. Tell him that if he steps one foot across the northern tree-line, I will not just defend my borders, I will march South and tear his throat out myself."

Vance swallowed hard, his jaw tight as he tried to maintain his composure. "The Alpha Council will hear of this, Silas. A Lycan cannot simply break treaty law for a broken, worthless....."

Before Vance could finish the insult, Silas moved. It was the same terrifying speed I had witnessed in the bedroom.

In a fraction of a second, Silas was down the stairs, his massive hand closing around Vance’s throat, lifting the grown enforcer entirely off the ground. The white flag of parley clattered to the dirt, trampled beneath Silas’s heavy boot.

"Choose your next words with extreme care, little wolf," Silas snarled directly into his face, his fangs fully extended, his Lycan features bleeding through his human mask. "Because the Council cannot save a dead messenger. If Kaelen wants her, tell him to bring his army. I am starved for a real fight."

With a brutal shove, Silas threw Vance to the ground. The enforcer gasped for air, scrambling backward into the dirt, all of his manufactured bravery entirely shattered. He didn't say another word. He scrambled to his feet, turned, and fled past the iron gates, his tail practically tucked between his legs.

Down below, Silas stood alone at the gate, his chest heaving as he stared into the tree-line where the messenger had disappeared. Slowly, his posture softened, and the violent violet light in his eyes began to recede back to a warm amber.

And then, as if he could feel my gaze from a hundred yards away, Silas turned his head.

He looked straight up at the window of the grand suite.

Our eyes locked through the glass. Even at this distance, the invisible, magnetic pulse in my veins leaped, syncing instantly with the heavy thrumming of his heart. He didn't look angry anymore. He just looked... protective. Relieved that I was still there.

He gave me a brief, firm nod. a silent promise kept, before turning to bark orders to Marcus to seal the gates.

I stepped back from the window, my heart racing, but for the first time in my life, it wasn't racing from fear. It was racing with hope. Kaelen was coming, and a war was looming on the horizon. But looking down at the giant who had just defied the entire Alpha Council for my sake, I knew one thing for certain.

The Iron Claw had no idea what kind of monster they had just awoken.

He carried me past the guards and up the winding staircases as if I were made of glass, his grip unyielding and fierce. But deep below my guts, I had a sick, sinking feeling that whatever we killed in that dark cave wasn't the real deal. More was yet to come. The dark rot bleeding into the ocean was too vast, too ancient, and the warships on their way, being led by Kaelen were still carving their way through the fog, and it's no less than two long days out across the dark water, hungry for blood.Silas set me down on the edge of the velvet sofa with agonizing care. **Elara's pov**For several long moments, the only sound in the cavern was the heavy, ragged breathing of our small party and the soft *plip, plip* of melting grey ice dripping into the deadened pool.Silas didn't move. He kept me lifted in his arms, his heart hammering in a frantic, thunderous rhythm against my ribs. His skin was burning hot, but I could feel the tremor running through his broad shoulders, the terrifying adrenaline crash of an Alpha who had just come within a hair's breadth of losing his mate."Put me down, Silas," I murmured softly, resting my hand against the warm side of his neck. "My feet are fine. I'm safe." He exhaled a long, shaky breath, but he didn't lower me completely. Instead, he carefully shifted his hold so my boots touched the stone, though his arm remained locked tight around my waist, bearing most of my weight. His golden eyes swept over my face, scanning for any hidden pain, any lingering shadow of the creature's dark pull."That thing was fed direc

It possessed no flesh, only interlocking plates of calcified whale bone and jagged, black ice held together by the same hollow shadow that had ruined the Citadel's archives. Where its eyes should have been, twin hollows pulsed with an unnatural, sickly green light."Back!" Silas bellowed, his voice rattling the stalactites above. He shoved me forcefully toward the narrow mouth of the cave, stepping directly into the path of the beast. With a roar that shook the granite floor, he swung his heavy broadsword, channeling his Alpha strength into a brutal, crescent strike. With every step down toward the coastline, the deadened weight of the sea pressed heavier against my chest. Deep inside, Nala’s spirit remained coiled tight exhausted, split, and shielding the fragile twin sparks growing within my core. I couldn't channel a single drop of active earth magic to steady my footing without risking the dark pull below detecting my blood."Careful," Silas growled low in his throat, his massive hand shooting out to catch my forearm as a loose chunk of granite tumbled over the ledge, disappearing silently into the thick, oily sludge below.
