Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Yulansa
Listening to him, I got angry, though I couldn't say why.

I let out a cold snort.

"Who I marry has nothing to do with you."

Arthur didn't get angry. Instead, he smiled smugly, as if he'd heard the funniest joke in the world.

He glanced at Carlos, then leaned in close, crossed his arms, and raised an eyebrow.

"If it's not me, then go ahead and make up an actual name.

"I'd love to know what clueless idiot you sweet-talked into marrying a liar like you."

Arthur was so sure of himself.

Even Carlos began to doubt me.

He didn't believe me either.

His eyes filled with disappointment.

"Angela, when are you going to grow up and be sensible like Daisy?

"Yesterday, people from the Rinaldi family came by asking about a match for Daisy.

"How much longer do I have to worry about you?"

I gritted my teeth and didn't say a word.

I went alone to the shooting range in the backyard to blow off steam.

I grabbed a handful of bullets and loaded them into the magazine one by one, each round clicking sharply into place.

Arthur followed me again.

He tilted his head as he studied me, his voice a little softer.

"Is all this because you're worried about getting married? Is it really worth getting so worked up?

"Even if nobody marries you, you've still got me..."

Bang.

I pulled the trigger. Bull's-eye.

I've still got him? So what?

"Isn't it enough to have me looking out for you?"

Arthur murmured the last part.

I curled my lip. "I don't need you looking out for me. All I want is to put the Marchetti family back on top."

Was that tyrant really going to marry me or not?

What a pain.

His looks, status, and power were all miles above Arthur's.

So I asked Arthur, "Have you ever thought about what kind of woman you want to marry?"

Arthur was taken aback, then gave it some serious thought.

He counted on his fingers. "Three rules.

"She can't lie to me, stir up trouble, or be softhearted to a fault."

That made me even more annoyed.

I shouldered past him and walked out.

Every one of those rules was aimed at me.

And the Don's standards had to be even higher than Arthur's.

How could I ever measure up?

Was I really going to end up with nobody?

Arthur was still yelling after me. "Angie, you're the one who asked. What, am I supposed to lie like you do?

"Don't run off. Buy me a drink, and maybe I'll lower my standards a little."

...

The moment I stepped outside, I saw a jet-black Rolls-Royce Phantom parked out front.

An older man in a crisp suit and white gloves got out.

He approached me respectfully, carrying an elegant silver briefcase.

"Ms. Marchetti, since returning to headquarters, the Don has been tied up handling matters involving the major families. He hasn't had a moment to himself.

"Although he couldn't come in person, he asked me to bring you white truffles flown in from Italy and a bottle of your favorite vintage.

"Your wounded men are recovering well. There's no need to worry.

"The Don has told the five families that he intends to marry you, and their leaders will reach an agreement soon. He also said your father, Lorenzo Marchetti, was an extraordinary man and that you're a worthy heir.

"Once matters in Europe settle down, he'll set a date to formally ask your family for your hand."

Victor's old butler was all business. He said what he'd come to say and left.

White truffles flown in from Italy. I'd hardly ever tasted them.

"What's in the case? I can smell the wine from here. Open it."

Arthur's voice suddenly came from behind me.

Without thinking, I hid the briefcase behind my back.

"Angela, when did you start hiding things from me?"

I shook my head.

"He sent this to me. I don't want to show you. If you want a drink, get something from the wine cellar."

Arthur's expression shifted.

He scoffed dismissively.

"He?

"Angela, you really won't give up, will you?

"Which delivery service did you hire to bring you these props?

"You won't even let me see a bottle of wine. When your brother forces you into some arranged marriage, don't come crying to me and asking me to elope with you!"

For a while, I didn't hear anything about Arthur. When I finally did, Carlos only mentioned it in passing.Victor had sent Arthur to Mexico to take over the most chaotic stretch of the border. The whole Greco family had been forced to move along with him.People died there every day.He probably wouldn't see New York again for the rest of his life.Maybe that was for the best. After the reckless things he'd said that day, staying in New York would have gotten him killed sooner or later.Carlos said that before leaving, Arthur had someone deliver several crates of brass bullets that had long since gone out of production. He said they were my favorite.Arthur's intentions clearly crossed a line, so Carlos refused the delivery outright.I never found out who let it slip. But word that Arthur had hunted down gear to win me over reached Victor's ears. That week, a blizzard hit New York.Victor canceled all his international meetings and went down to the underground workshop to craft an enti

"Angela, I'm back."I was gathering cherry blossom petals to make pastries.Arthur's voice made me jump. When I got over the shock, I saw how exhausted and hurt he looked, as if the sight of me might make him cry."Did the Colombian sun fry your brain?"He gritted his teeth, looking as if he couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry. "Stop talking nonsense. Why didn't you wait for me to get back?"I thought he meant walking me down the aisle.I didn't have any brothers by blood. So Carlos had asked the Greco family. That was how he learned Arthur was away on business in South America. The job couldn't wait, so Carlos had only asked in passing.Whether Arthur returned in time didn't really matter."The Don picked the wedding date. It couldn't be changed. Besides, does it matter who walks me down the aisle?""It matters!"Arthur practically shouted it, his eyes going red."Weren't you determined to marry me? I was ready to marry you. How could you change in just six months?"That caught me

The Colombian rainforest was hot, humid, and dangerous. After each firefight, Arthur holed up in the safe house and sent one encrypted email after another to New York.Daisy's parting words kept circling in his mind. He'd been too full of himself. There would always be plenty of time, he'd thought, and marriage would only tie him down.He also had insecurities he'd never admit to anyone.Angela was so strong that he felt... he wasn't good enough for her. He'd hidden that insecurity by tearing her down with cruel words. Now he decided to sweet-talk her.He asked if she wanted to try barbecue in Bogotá or watch the sun set over the Caribbean...But she didn't answer a single one.A few months later, word finally came from the Greco family.Anthony shouted over the phone for him to get his ass back to New York immediately.Angela was getting married, he said, and every family needed to send someone to the wedding. His father sounded anxious too.But Arthur laughed. He thought Angela was t

In the jungles of Colombia, Arthur ran into someone familiar.Daisy.She'd crossed the Rinaldi family, and with nowhere left to turn, she'd fled to South America. When Arthur saw her, he wanted to pretend he hadn't.But Daisy clung to his arm like it was a lifeline. They drank cheap tequila in a run-down bar, and somehow the conversation kept circling back to Angela.Arthur knocked back a drink and sighed."Too bad, Daisy. I'm afraid you'll miss my wedding to Angela."Daisy lowered her eyes with a small smile.Something about her expression bothered Arthur, but he couldn't put his finger on it.Daisy said, "So it's settled? How come I didn't hear about it before I left?"Arthur felt a twinge of guilt and took a drink to hide it. "That girl's already preparing her dowry. When I get back, we'll settle it."Daisy's eyes glinted with mockery. Before she left, Daisy suddenly turned and looked at Arthur."Arthur, waiting doesn't guarantee you anything."I waited two years for that rich boy,

For men of Arthur's generation, earning the Don's favor was an honor worth bragging about for a lifetime. In the days before he left, Arthur's friends couldn't stop flattering him.It went to his head.Every day, he drank until he blacked out and had to be carried home, then stumbled back to the bar the next day.On the day he left, he was already dozens of miles outside New York before he sobered up and smacked his forehead. He'd forgotten to tell Angela. When Daisy kissed him that day, his heart had pounded like crazy, and he'd run for it.In their world, women threw themselves at men all the time. But when he got home, he scrubbed his face again and again, unable to shake his disgust. They were adults. It was harmless fun, so why did it bother him? After turning it over in his mind for a long time, he finally figured it out.It was because of Angela. That girl was dead set on marrying him.She had a long list of flaws, but they'd grown up together, so he was willing to overlook them

I should never have told Victor about the hole in the South Side books.Even in the middle of his mob wars, he made time to find the rat himself."Have the accountant print out every transaction from the past two years and bring it to my study."The accountant's knees went weak with fear, and he spent the entire night pulling the books together. When Victor reviewed the records, I couldn't tell whether he was pleased or angry.I knew the South Side books were a mess, and I felt a little guilty."Maybe we should let it go? It's only a few million. Consider it a bonus for the guys' hard work."Maybe one of them needed money fast, or maybe it's a bookkeeping mistake..."Victor closed the ledger, picked up a sterling silver letter opener, and looked down the line of capos standing in front of him."In any well-run crew, every gun and every bullet is accounted for. That's what keeps you alive."Over the past two years, three million dollars has gone missing from the books, not to mention th
