Anastasia’s POV:

I didn’t sleep a wink.

I lay in the dark after Simone finally drifted off on my couch and I stared at the ceiling and I thought about the folder sitting on my nightstand and the phone call and the fake account and the thirty days and at some point around four in the morning I stopped trying to sleep and made coffee and sat at my kitchen table in the quiet and let myself feel all of it properly for the first time since the parking garage.

Because I had not let myself feel it yet

Zoe’s POV:It happened accidentally which was the worst way for it to happen. Not badly. It did not go badly. But I had a version in my head of how Daniel would meet my father that involved preparation and context and the particular conditions under which my father was at his most approachable which was not seven thirty in the morning in the kitchen in the grey sweater before he had finished his coffee. We had been together for three months. Not officially together in the sense of a conversation where we used words like together. Just in the sense of every Saturday and most Thursdays and the occasional Friday and texting in the way of two people who had things to say to each other that did not require occasion.I had not brought him to the house. Not deliberately avoiding it. Just not doing it yet because the house was specific in the way that my house was always going to be specific and I wanted the context to be right. The context was not right at seven thirty on a school morning wh

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 117: Victoria At Eighty

Zoe’s POV:Grandma Victoria turned eighty in the way she did everything, with complete composure and zero tolerance for fuss. She had told us in September that she did not want a party and my mother had said of course and my father had said whatever you want and I had written party in the green notebook and underlined it twice because Victoria saying she did not want a party was not the same as Victoria not wanting to be acknowledged and the difference between those two things was something I had understood about her since I was approximately seven years old.The party was small.Victoria’s definition of small and everyone else’s definition of small were different things but we met in the middle, which was twelve people at the house on the street twelve minutes from ours, which Victoria had been in for several years now and which had a garden she had opinions about and a sitting room with curtains my mother had chosen and which Victoria had been telling people she had chosen herself e

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 116: Eve Mercer Is Nine Years Old And Is Already Running Things

Zoe’s POV:Eve had decided she wanted to be an architect. She had announced this at dinner three weeks ago at Simone and Dean’s and had looked around the table waiting for someone to dispute it and nobody had disputed it because Eve at nine years old had the particular quality of a person whose decisions you did not dispute without a very good reason and a well prepared argument. She had also decided that the person who was going to teach her was me.Not my mother, who was an actual designer with an actual firm and an actual community center with her name attached to it.Me.I had asked Eve why and Eve had said because you explain things the way they actually are and not the way you want me to think they are and I had looked at this nine year old and thought that was both the most accurate and the most pointed thing anyone had said to me in recent memory. We were at their apartment on a Saturday and Eve had brought a notebook. Not a green one like mine. A red one. She had apparently d

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 115: What I Told My Mother

Zoe’s POV:I told my mother about the building on Sunday. Not about Daniel specifically. Not about what the afternoon had been or the particular way he had stood beside the east windows and waited while I looked without filling the silence. I told her about the building because the building was the part that required telling and the rest was mine to keep for now.She was in the studio when I found her.Sketch notebook open, pencil in hand, the particular stillness of someone who is doing the work that matters to them. I had grown up watching this and I knew better than to interrupt it so I sat in the chair in the corner and waited and she finished what she was doing and looked up.“Grant and Fifth,” I said. She put her pencil down.“The old press building,” she said.“You know it,” I said.“I walked past it for two years thinking about it,” she said. “What happened to it?”“Someone bought it,” I said. “Two years ago. He has been trying to figure out what to do with it.”She looked at

  • They Wanted Me Gone, So I Became Unforgettable   Chapter 114: Geometry

Zoe’s POV:Saturday with Daniel was not what I planned. Not because it went badly. It did not go badly. It went in a direction I had not accounted for which is different from badly and which I should have anticipated because I had been given sufficient data about Daniel Chen to understand that he was not someone who did predictable things. He texted at ten in the morning.“Are you actually free or are you free in the way where you have things but you moved them.”I looked at the text.“Both,” I typed back.“What did you move,” he said.“Design committee meeting,” I said. “I rescheduled it.”“You run the design committee,” he said.“Yes,” I said.“So you rescheduled your own meeting,” he said.“The committee will survive,” I said.Three dots.“I am glad you moved it,” he said. “I want to show you something. Can you meet me at the corner of Grant and Fifth at eleven.”I looked at the address.Grant and Fifth was not near Archer’s.Grant and Fifth was not near anything I associated with
