❄︎ Viktor ❄︎

Betrayal, my old friend.

No matter how I tried to prepare for the blow, I never seemed to steel myself on time when it mattered the most.

My arm rose, the heavy metal an extension of me as I aimed at Orlov Conti’s head. Anything to knock his hand off her skin.

The surprised shouts of Primo’s men warbled all around as my men and the Marlow soldatos closed in, shooting them down like sitting ducks.

The heiress watched my movements in shock. Her eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights. Open lips, flushed cheeks, fists clenched tight. Wearing a red dress so short I could picture what lay just above.

Orlov stood with his face close to hers, leveling me with a smug grin.

“Viktor…” Rosalind started, her voice a soft gasp piercing through the battle waging in the background.

I applied pressure on the stone-cold trigger, but my aim flew wide as weight crashed into my side.

I wasted no time in smashing the butt of my gun into the temple of the man who tackled me. I looked sidew

❦ Rosalind ❦ “Are you alright?” Marcus asked, his gaze searching mine.“I’m fine,” I responded curtly. My extremities buzzed with a mix of terror and excitement, and I’m horrified to realize that I’m looking forward to seeing Viktor again.I can’t believe I’m walking to my death with stupid butterflies in my stomach.I’d had to pick up Dante’s skin with the linen cloth and stuff it back in the box, which I hid in the boot of the car.The throw-up hadn’t needed an explanation. I’m sure they’d expected me to get sick after seeing a man lose his entire wrist.Viktor had asked me to come alone, and despite the warning bells in my guts, I didn’t tell Marcus about the threat/invitation. I knew how he would want to handle it, guns blazing and so on. I strongly believed a simple conversation would solve the misunderstanding. That’s all this was, a misunderstanding.Immediately I got into the house, I hopped into the shower to wash the blood off my skin. The water streamed down my face, my he

❦ Rosalind ❦ The silence stretched uncomfortably. His face, though expressionless, still betrayed him. His nostrils twitched, and he fought the urge to break eye contact.“Not exactly. I’m sure you know everything there is to know.”“What is the largest money-making operation?”“The gambling rings and underground casino.”“Right. Then why do the Marinos and Contis so desperately want it? It can’t be for the money.” I insisted. They had their own assets and dealt in drugs and weapons. Viktor had accused me of knowing something about the Grand Marlow, something important. I had a feeling it was the key to the entire mystery.“It’s about power, Rosalind.” He drew up to his full height in his seat, setting down the pen with a quiet clink in its holder. “Power is not content. Everyone wants more and more. If one man could own the world, he would set it in his sights.”Feeling stuffy under his piercing gaze, I stood up to stand by the open window. A garden sculptor was shaping the grass i

❦ Rosalind ❦ “I can’t breathe!”Juliana did not relent, her tanned arms locked around my neck as she kissed me on the cheeks and mouth enthusiastically.“La mia bambina bella!” (My beautiful little girl), she cooed nonstop.Little? She’s only a year older than me by the way.“What are you doing here?” I asked after she released me.“I took it upon myself to visit. Don’t worry, I’m not mad at you for not inviting me.”I followed behind her as she threw herself into Claudia.“Oh, you’ve gotten so big, bella!” Claudia said, her eyes crinkling with laughter. “How’s your mama?”“Oh, she’s alright. She misses me, but she’ll be fine. I’m here on a very important mission.” Juliana said the last part in a conspiratorial whisper to Claudia.Claudia nodded, their eyes on me. “It’s needed.”“What’s needed?” I asked impatiently.“Me in your life, bella. I should have come earlier…”“No, you don’t understand. It’s dangerous. You can’t be here.”At my tone, she sobered and squinted at me. “If it’s

❦ Rosalind ❦ The car ride home was as silent as a graveyard.I twisted my prosthetic, not nervously, but in a stunned haze. The events of the last 24 hours and the expression on Viktor’s face replayed over and over in my mind like a broken record. His gaze had been so hateful, and cold.I tried to convince myself that he had pointed the gun at Orlov, but a tiny voice kept saying he had meant to kill me.I didn’t blame him, it looked bad, it really did. I didn’t want him thinking I was working with Orlov or the Mexicans. I’d have to schedule a meeting or at least call him to straighten things out. It didn’t feel good making an enemy out of Viktor.I spoke only after we arrived, and Marcus, Orlov, four soldatos and I exited the car.“We left Dante behind,” I stated, my shoulders sagging under the first few rays of sunrise.“He can take care of himself. He probably escaped. But we’ll send a party back for him,” Marcus assured me.No, he couldn’t possibly escape. Not after the way Viktor

❦ Rosalind ❦ “Calm down, boy… sshh.” I was shaking, zaps of terror stabbing my chest. “Please don’t hurt me.”The massive bulldog in front of me did not speak English, but I hoped my tone would convey to him that I was no threat, and I really didn’t want to be eaten.Primo had refused to listen to my pleas, threats, and propositions. He’d instead thrown me into a large dog pen. A metal cage as wide as two cars parked side by side. It wasn’t enough space for me and seven dogs.“Please…” my voice broke. His growls rumbled from deep within his chest, rheumy eyes locked on me with a promise of death. In the hour I’d been locked in with them, the dogs had growled at me but left me alone as long as I cowered at one edge and didn’t move a muscle. Whenever I so much as stretched my legs or tried to change position for comfort, they’d growl. The alpha dog, the one about to mangle me, had turned on me after one of Primo’s men threw me a piece of meat from outside. The bulldog had immediately r
