Iris’s POV

Panic surged through me as I struggled to do something, anything at all. But my body was too weak to respond.

This is it, I thought to myself.

I had no wolf to heal me. I had no strength to crawl. Maybe this was the way it was meant to be. Maybe I was meant to leave this way.

Tears welled up in my eyes. My breathing grew shallow as my lungs struggled to work. My vision darkened.

A memory flashed through my foggy mind.

I could hear a little girl’s laugh. I knew that laugh. I could never forget it.

It was Evie.

Her face appeared above me, just as I remembered her. With her big, bright eyes, her tiny nose, and a large grin on her face.

“Mama,” she said, grinning widely.

My lips trembled as I stared at her. I wanted to tell her that I missed her, that I was sorry.

Warmth spread in my chest, replacing the burn from the poison.

If this was death, maybe it wasn’t so bad. Maybe I could stay here with her.

Her little hand reached out for mine, and I tried to lift my arm. My fingers

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 48

Iris’s POVA Week LaterI was healed. At least, that’s what the healer said. The truth was that my body had recovered physically. The pain was gone. The dizziness had faded. I could move without any form of pain or ache. But inside? Inside, I was still a mess. The fear still lingered at the back of my mind, and it refused to leave.Partially true to Rowan’s words, he had been around almost every day. If he wasn’t there, Asher was, or Lucas, his cold Gamma. I was never left alone. It was suffocating at times, but I never said a word, because deep down, I needed it.I still found myself glancing around in fear, sniffing food twice before tasting it, and waking in the middle of the night with my heart racing for no reason. The poisoning had left a scar inside me that I wasn’t sure was going to fade anytime soon. And that was exactly why I knew I couldn’t stay here. Someone wanted me dead, and I wasn’t going to give them another chance. It wasn’t just about the poison, it was about the fa

Iris’s POVRowan stopped in the doorway. His shoulders stiffened, and for a moment, I thought he would refuse, but slowly he turned back, his expression softening slightly.“I wasn’t planning to,” he said quietly. He walked back and sat in the chair silently. My eyelids grew heavier, but every time they closed for more than a second, the flashes came back—of the burning poison, the helplessness, and the fear that I might never wake up again.I opened my eyes again and found Rowan sitting there, still watching me with his arms resting on his knees. “What is it?” he asked.I swallowed as my mind raced. Part of me wanted to tell him everything I suspected, to put Chloe’s name out there, to let him deal with her the way only an Alpha could. But that would go against the decision I had already made. I couldn’t make any accusations without proof.“Nothing,” I lied. His eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t press.I turned my face away, pretending to focus on the blanket, but the truth was,

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 46

Iris’s POVWhen I opened my eyes again, I groaned in pain. For a second, I didn’t remember where I was or why my body felt like it had been beaten from the inside out. Then suddenly, the memories came back in a rush. The food. The twisting pain. Evie.I tried to move, but my limbs were heavy, sluggish, and uncooperative. My chest ached, and it was hard to breathe, as if my lungs had forgotten how to work properly.A voice came from somewhere beside me. “She’s awake.”I turned my head slowly. Rowan stood there with his arms crossed. His brown eyes were dark as they pierced through me with intensity.“You almost died,” he said coldly, his jaw tightening.I tried to speak, but my voice croaked. “Poison…”He stepped closer, his eyes darkening. “Yes. And whoever did it didn’t mean to scare you, Iris. They meant to kill you.”My heart stuttered painfully, and I swallowed. I didn’t need him to tell me that. I had already felt it in the fire burning through my veins, in the way my body had re

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 44

Iris’s POVSomething was wrong. The first sign was so small that I almost missed it.It was like a faint tightness in my stomach. It was nothing to worry about.Earlier, I had seen the food tray sitting in the hallway like it had been these past few days. And as usual, no one waited around after that one soft knock. I didn’t think twice. I brought it inside, sat down, and ate without hesitation. When I finished eating, I pushed the empty plate aside, and rested against the pillow. Suddenly, it started. It was like something was twisting deep inside me. I thought maybe it was because I had eaten too fast. That happened sometimes. But the twisting got tighter and tighter.I sat up slowly, frowning.Cold sweat ran down my head, and the room tilted.I blinked hard, trying to focus, but my vision was getting blurry. My heart pounded very fast against my chest. I pressed a hand to my stomach with a small grunt.Something was wrong.I dragged my legs out of the bed and tried to stand. My kne

Iris’s POVThose words stuck with me long after Asher left. Several emotions raced through me, and I felt so confused. However, to my surprise (and great relief), Jasmine didn’t come back for the tour that day. That evening, there was a soft knock on the door. I called out, but no one answered. After a minute or two, I stood up slowly and walked to the door. When I opened it, I found a tray of food sitting neatly on the floor. The hall was empty.I glanced up and down, but there wasn’t a single person in the hallway. I couldn’t even hear the sound of footsteps. I took the tray inside with a small frown on my face. Whoever had left it clearly didn’t want to be seen delivering it.I stared at the tray for another minute, debating whether it was even wise to eat the food when I didn’t know who had placed it there. It could be Chloe, I thought with a shiver. Maybe she had decided to poison me to get me out of the way.Or… it could be Rowan. That thought sent a different kind of shiver do
