I wasn’t eavesdropping. That’s what I told myself, standing barefoot in the dark hallway.

I checked my phone when I got back to bed, eleven forty-three at night. I’d only gotten up because sleep wouldn’t come. The apartment felt too quiet, my thoughts too loud, and I needed water, something to do with my hands, anything to quiet the restless ache in my chest.

That was all, but then I heard his laugh.

Warm, loose, completely unguarded, drifting from the study like a ghost from another life. I

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    TUESDAY

It happened on a Tuesday evening, which felt exactly right. Nothing important in my life had ever announced itself. The important moments simply arrived on ordinary days, while I was doing something else entirely. This one arrived while we were looking at drawings. We’d been working late. Amber light came through the north windows at the angle I’d come to think of as the building’s truest version of itself.I was marking a measurement when Elliot put down his pencil. I didn’t look up right away. He set it down with intention sometimes, usually it meant he was reconsidering something and was about to tell me a calculation was off.He didn’t say anything about the calculation.“I need to tell you something,” he said.I looked up.His expression was the one he wore when he’d already made a decision and was simply moving through it clearly, unhurried, not performing. The same look he had when he committed to a structural choice he knew he might have to defend later.“Okay,” I said.“Naom

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 31- TOO LATE

I heard two deliberate and unhurried, I came with Luca on my hip, expecting a delivery. Instead, Victor Sinclair stood in my hallway. With a posture that had always made him look like he owned whatever room he occupied. That boardroom authority, constructed over decades, worn like a second skin. Except today it didn’t look like that.Today he looked like a man who had driven somewhere he wasn’t sure he should have come, and was standing in the hallway of that decision without anything left to make him large.I didn’t open the door wider.“I’m not going to ask you to let me in,” he said.“Good,” I said.He nodded once, like that was the answer he’d expected and had already decided was fair. Luca looked at him the way he looked at everything unfamiliar. Victor looked back at his grandson. Something moved across his face I had never seen there before. Not the managed warmth he deployed at family occasions. Something quieter and more private. The expression of a man encountering somethi

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 30- ON RECORD

Diana called at eight-fifteen while I was wrestling Luca into his vest.“Turn on the news,” she said. “Dominic is making a statement.”“What kind of statement?”“It has no title.” A pause, tight. “Which means it’s either going to be very good or very bad. Come to my office. Don’t watch it alone.”I got Luca into the bouncer, called Nina, and was in a cab fifteen minutes later. My hands wouldn’t quite settle in my lap the whole way there.Diana put a coffee in my hand the second I walked through the door and turned the screen on her desk toward me without a word.Dominic was already at the podium, standing in a room full of cameras in a dark suit with no tie, looking like a man who had decided something and was going to see it through to the end.I knew that look. It hit me without warning. I kept my face very still and watched the screen.“He’s not reading anything,” Diana said quietly.“Seems like it.”“He prepared for this. But he’s not reading it.” Another pause. “That’s deliberate

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 29: ONE

I woke up on Luca's first birthday and lay in the dark for a moment before getting up. One year. One year since everything that came after.I got up before he woke, made coffee in the early quiet, and stood at the kitchen window looking at the apartment in the grey morning light. The drawings on the wall. The shelf with his things lined up on it. The east window doing its particular thing with the first sun, laying a strip of gold across the floor that I'd come to think of as ours.‘We made it here,’ I thought. ‘Both of us.’Then he woke up — loudly, confidently, announcing himself to the building the way he announced himself to everything.I went to get him."Happy birthday my baby" I said.He grabbed my face with both hands and squeezed."I know," I said. "Me too."Nina arrived first, which was always how Nina arrived — first, loudly, with more than was strictly necessary. She came through the door carrying three balloons in blue and gold, and a cake she'd made herself in a tin tha

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 28: ELLIOT

The interview ran on Thursday and I read it at the kitchen table with Luca on my lap.Diana texted at seven-fifteen: “Good piece.”Two words. From Diana, that was an ovation.I looked at Luca. “That’s Mama’s name,” I told him. “In an actual thing.”He grabbed his bottle with both hands and looked away.“Fair enough,” I said.Dominic’s PR team didn’t call back.I noticed the absence without examining it. Whatever had happened on that side—the conversation, the decision, the quiet realization that calling a woman to delay her own professional life was not a position worth holding, I wasn’t part of it. That was the arrangement.Elliot and I had developed a working rhythm by the third week. He arrived early, left late, worked in the same long focused stretches I worked in—no checking his phone, no half-elsewhere energy. He had opinions and stated them directly. Took pushback when the argument was good. Held his ground when it wasn’t.We didn’t discuss anything that wasn’t the building. I

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 27

Three months after leaving, a client called me Reed. Not Sinclair. Not “Mrs. Sinclair” . Not any of the careful formulations I’d been navigating for two years in rooms where my husband’s name always arrived first, like something I’d borrowed and never quite made mine.Just Reed.I turned toward the window for two seconds. Not dramatically, just long enough to put my face back together before the stillness gave me away. The city moved outside, indifferent as always. I thought, ‘That’s still who I am. That’s who I’ve been the whole time.’ Then I turned back, answered his question, and kept going. That was how the rebuilding happened. Not one large moment. A series of small ones, each landing in the same place, accumulating into something solid. The project was Diana’s doing. She’d called three weeks after I left—not to ask how I was, though she’d done that first, briefly, and meant it, but to ask if I was ready to work.“There’s a restoration project,” she said. “Victorian conversion,

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 4- THE EMPTY CHAIR

I stared at the receipt until the numbers blurred. Two entrées. Two desserts. A bottle of wine. The total sat at the bottom like something written in a language I understood far better than I wanted to. There had to be an explanation. Dominic was a CEO, he ate dinners like this with clients all th

Every time I closed my eyes I saw that name, glowing on a dark screen, sharp as a paper cut. Celeste Vane. A name I had never heard in my life. A name that shouldn't have mattered at all. And yet it sat in my chest all night, refusing to leave. By three in the morning Dominic was asleep beside me

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 2- THE NAME ON THE SCREEN

The ridiculous thing was, I couldn't even prove he had deleted a message. . I stood in the kitchen with my phone in my hand, staring at the same conversation for the hundredth time. Four months ago, I was worrying about labor and feeding schedules. Now I was standing in a kitchen worth more than

  • Too Late Mr SINCLAIR    CHAPTER 1- THE SECOND CUP

I poured two cups of coffee that morning as always. One for me, one for my husband. He stopped touching my coffee for months now. But I kept making it anyway. A part of me was still waiting for the version of him who used to drink it standing right behind me, one hand on my waist, complaining that
