Conrad's POV

The ballroom is really fancy, with gold lights and crystal chandeliers that make everything look elegant on the shiny marble floors. Every time someone laughs, it sounds like they're trying hard, and every handshake seems planned out. There are a lot of men standing around in nice suits; CEOs with names people recognize and egos that are really big.

I'm standing near one of the tables with a glass of whiskey in my hand. If someone is watching me, he'd think I'm calm and comfortable. I'm restless, slowly sipping whiskey I can't taste because my mind is glued to the text.

It stays in my head like glue. It's more like a burn that won't heal.

At first, I thought it was Diane and her good-for-nothing tricks, but when she received the same text, it all turned upside down and put my mind in total disarray.

She showed me the same text. Word for word, unknown number. It's messed up, honestly.

I just watch the CEOs and business elites discuss their desks and numbers, and I'm not paying attention or learning anything from their conversations. Nothing makes sense to me. The information is there, but none of it registers.

If Diane didn't send the message, then who did?

And why target both of us?

I'm a man who loves to be in charge of everything, but this message feels like someone is trying to control me. It makes me so self-aware that I think everyone close to me is an enemy or a potential suspect.

"You look like someone who's about to fight the chandelier. What's wrong with you, Conrad?" He asks this after I shudder, realizing Ward's presence.

I turn sharply, staring at him standing beside me. His tie is a little loose, which can only mean he's had a lot of conversations while I've been rooted in one place. I know he'll be concerned because I'm his major client and best friend.

"I didn't know you were here."

"I've been standing here for a while now and you didn't even notice me."

"I was..."

"I've been watching you, Conrad. You've been lost. Acting like someone who's about to commit suicide. Some people think you're part of the party's decoration because you've been holding a cup of whiskey you don't sip from. What's going on, brother?" Ward places his right hand on my shoulder and bends down to get a proper look at me.

I smile. "Nothing is going on, Ward. I'm fine."

"You don't need to lie to me, Conrad. If you killed someone, I can help you win the case. You know how good I am. Just tell me what's wrong." Ward persists, rubbing my left shoulder vigorously.

Is he trying to pull the words out of my mouth?

He's my best friend, so he knows when something's up, and hiding it from him will only make him more persistent.

"Are you still worried about the message? Is that what's bothering you?" Ward asks, like he already has it figured out.

"Yes, it's about that. At first I thought it was Diane, but she received the same text, which obviously means it's not her." I sigh without hesitation as he pushes the whiskey to my mouth.

"Drink and let me handle it. I'll find who sent that message and bring him to you, Conrad. No matter how well they think they've covered it up, I'll find that person and make him pay." Ward assures me.

"That's what I pay you for, right?" I let out a smile, this time genuine. It feels like Ward has lifted the burden off my chest.

Ward grins. "That is absolutely right."

Diane approaches us with a wide smile on her face. She seems confident, acting as professional as she should, but this time it's serious. I know it's all about the text; it gives her that cautious look. She's the same Diane but different, all thanks to the message.

"Wow, this gorgeous lady is coming right towards us, and I'd be damned if I don't get to know who she is." Ward exclaims. I know he's referring to my secretary, but he has no idea she's restricted. I can't let Ward get close to her. She's off limits.

As she gets closer, I stand and go to meet her, wondering if she has words for me. Ward follows, thinking I'm after her number or trying to know her better.

"This is my secretary, Ward. Diane, this is Ward, my best friend and lawyer."

I watch Ward's eyes widen as he looks Diane over, feeding his eyes. He blinks, trying to put on his seductive look to keep her head over heels.

"He never mentioned he hired someone as hot as you. You look like you've starred in a spy movie." Diane places her hand in Ward's, and he kisses her knuckles.

"She's never acted in a spy movie, Ward. She's a staff member working in my company. She's my secretary, do you understand that?"

"Diane is a nice name. Do you have any other name aside from the one your boss knows?" Ward goes on to ask, outrightly disrespecting me.

"No sir, Diane is my name." She responds, infuriating me.

Why is she flirting with another man in the presence of her boss? Does she know she could lose her job? Or is she doing this to spite me?

"Such a nice voice, and you look good too."

"You look good as well, sir." She responds and turns to look at me. I shoot a dead glare at her.

"I'll go back to my duty, boss." Diane backs away, returning to her duties.

"Come on, you should introduce me more often to hot staff in your office, Conrad." Ward chuckles as he collects my cup of whiskey and sips from it. He can't stop looking at her until she disappears from the hallway.

"Don't go near her, my friend." I warn, my face serious.

"I was only shaking her hand. Besides, there's no harm in..."

"I know that, but don't forget I know you. This is a warning, Ward. Don't go near her. Pay attention to what you're doing, and find who sent that text message as fast as possible so I can get this off my neck. It's really getting to me."

"It's making you sip whiskey like it's cold black coffee." Ward jokes, mocking me for being lost at an event. I think of the people referring to me as part of the decorations.

No one is going near Diane. I don't know what it is.

Protection.

Possession.

Or maybe it's a growing sense that a game is being played, and Diane is far more entangled in it than I ever planned for. How do I get her out?

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 31

Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 30

Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 29

Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 28

Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 27

Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r

Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
