The moment I get into the house, I rest my back on the door, shutting my eyes as my heart pounds painfully in my chest. How could I? How could I forget who Conrad Beaumont is and my place in his life? Not as a secretary, but as a... you already know what it is. I forgot for a moment that he's a freak. Son of a cunt. I hear his car driving off outside, and an exhausted sigh tears through my lips. So this is really it? The life I signed for? I wouldn't say my life is pathetic, because I chose it myself. My phone begins ringing in my purse, jolting me out of my thoughts. I lift myself from the door and open my purse. The number isn't registered, and that makes me grip my purse tight before clicking the green icon, my heart racing. "Diane!!" The sharp voice blares through the speaker, and I sigh. That voice. I'd recognize it anywhere, even in my dreams. It's Jeremy, my brother. "Please tell me you didn't abandon me here. Tell me you're going to get me out. You haven't visited and..." Ahh! He's right. I haven't visited him, and even when I wanted to, I got that urgent call from Conrad and it skipped my mind again. His voice is pleadingly desperate, as if he's holding onto the last drop of hope he has, which is me. As if he's caught between begging to be gotten out and begging me to believe he's innocent. I throw my purse on the sofa, rubbing my forehead with my fingertips. "Calm down, Jeremy." I mutter softly, but I hear him groan. "Don't tell me to calm down, Diane. This place is scary and..." "I know it's scary, but I'm still trying to figure things out. You have to hang on till I get everything settled." I say, hoping he'll understand even though I don't give him much information. Of course, I have a lot to handle, including clearing my outstanding debts. I know how scary it can be because I've been there, just that I was... fortunate to get out within 24 hours. Right now, I'm all he's got. If I don't exercise patience, things might really go berserk, and that's the last thing I want. "When will you be done with whatever you're sorting, huh?" He asks, and even though I'm not with him, I can sense how tired he is from his voice. I bite the corner of my lip, so hard, then sit down softly. "Just trust me, Jeremy. I'll figure everything out and I'll come get you." I assure him, and that's it; the call beeps twice and disconnects. I throw my phone on the empty space beside me, shut my eyes for a brief moment, then open them. I'll get him out, and that's a promise. I stand from the sofa and bolt into my room, where I strip every piece of clothing off my body, then pause in front of the mirror to stare at myself. I stare for too long, my mind a jumbled mess. It might look like my body still has some dignity left, but only I know how thin the thread is and how close it is to snapping. I shake my head with a blink, then leave the room and enter the bathroom. *** Taking a shower seems to ease my nerves, because now I'm in the kitchen, headphones on, preparing something mouth-watering for myself. The aroma of pancakes swirls in the air as I sit on the counter, humming to the music, swinging my legs like I've got nothing to think about, or at least, not for now, while I patiently wait for the pancakes to be ready to devour. But peace doesn't always last, especially for people like me, because the next second, the words rush in like a brutal wave. This won't be the end, Diane. You must have thought you scaled through, didn't you? Something bigger is coming and trust me, Conrad Beaumont, you won't see it coming. With love from... Someone who wishes to see you crumble to ashes. Those words rob me of my happiness instantly, and I'm forced to remove the headphones. I'm not the only one who got the anonymous message. Conrad did too, and the fact that we were once involved in an intimate scandal and now this makes my heart clench and twist in pain. I can't understand why he received a message from someone, and then I did too. Who's doing this? Could it be the same person playing tricks on us? Or is it just a coincidence? Yet again, I can't wrap my mind around everything happening around us and... and... My eyes shoot wide when the smell of something burning fills my nostrils. I gasp, jumping down from the counter as I realize my pancakes are burning. I only tranced out for a few moments. How did... I'm coughing terribly as I turn off the gas. I'm forced to open the windows before rushing out of the kitchen. Even as I sit in the living room, I can still smell everything that burned. God. I should have turned off the gas before anything, but I had no idea I'd drift back to the message. I truly want to push everything aside; my deal with Conrad, the anonymous messages, my brother, everything. I want to forget them, even if just for a moment. I sigh. Things don't always work out the way I plan, and that's just how I was created. I walk back into the kitchen, grab a bowl, cornflakes and a can of milk from the refrigerator, then head back to my room. I'll just have this and retire to bed. Nice dinner ruined, so let's go with this. I sit on the bed and start eating when my phone begins ringing again from the bedstand. My brows squint as I turn to stare at it. What happened? I mean, what changed? I've been receiving a lot of calls lately, and it's unusual. My phone screen goes off after I don't pick up, but almost immediately, it starts ringing again. I shoot my hand forward with a slight groan, then gasp when I see the caller ID. I don't hesitate. I instantly click the green icon, my heart palpitating with excitement. "Hazel!!" "Diane!!" We chorus once the call connects. I can feel the excitement bubbling in Hazel's voice, and so is mine. It's been years. Freaking years!! "Girl, it's been years! I thought you'd be excited to answer my call once you saw my name light up your phone screen." Hazel's voice comes from the other end, and even though I can't see her face, I know that girl is pouting. A smile pulls at the corner of my lips. A real, genuine smile. "I had no idea you were the one calling and..." "Wait, don't tell me you lost my contact?" She cuts in, her voice dripping with disappointment and tinged with disbelief. "I wouldn't dare. I just wasn't with my phone." I explain with a smile. Hazel and I talk over the phone for a few minutes, and I literally scream my lungs out when she informs me she'll be returning to the country tomorrow to resume her new work on Monday. Finally, my lonely days are over. But just as we're talking about the job, my peace, hope and everything is crushed when she reveals the new company she'll be working with. It turns out to be...Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh
Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col
Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr
Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha
Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r
Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
