"Diane...!!" "Can you hear me, Diane? What happened? Huh??" Hazel's voice snaps me out of my thoughts. Her once-excited voice is now filled with worry and tinged with curiosity. "Diane?" She calls again, and I sigh, pressing my lips together. "I'm... I tranced..." I stop myself before I can finish. I know Hazel; if I say I tranced out, she'll press so hard to know why. I chuckle. "I just got so excited that I didn't know what to say." Lies. But that's all I can think of to redeem the moment, and I only hope Hazel buys the crap I said. Okay, maybe it's only partly a lie. Heavens, I'm genuinely excited about the new job, but God, I didn't expect it to be Reney's. It makes my stomach clench and my heart twist. My friend is going to work in a rival company. I don't know why, but I can feel my skin crawling with tension and maybe fear of what will happen in the future. "I don't believe you." Hazel says. Amazing! She doesn't. Even though we've been apart for a few years, Hazel has this guts to always see through my lies. She knows when I'm lying and when I'm telling the truth, and that has always made it difficult to lie to her, even when I really want to. I press my fingers into my forehead. I can't tell her the place she got a job at is a rival company to mine. I can't start telling her the history Reney and Conrad's company share, how they're at loggerheads, and how we'll be getting entangled in the midst of everything. "You must have lost your wit, seriously? You can't tell when I'm lying now?" I mutter, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. I hear Hazel scoff, barely audible, then she mutters, "I don't really believe you, but I'll pretend I do. We'll discuss again when I return to the country." And like that... Beep. Beep. The call ends. I stare at the screen of my phone, wondering what I can possibly do. I'm not being dramatic or excessively sensitive, but I can't shake the persistent feeling that things will take another shape as soon as Hazel starts working in that company. The feeling, the gnawing clench in my chest, persists so much that I can't sleep, I can't blink. I just lie on the bed, staring at the ceiling, thoughts racing, still hoping I'm just being paranoid. *** The next morning hits me like a train. Busy, busy, busy. Of course, Sundays have always been busy for me because I have a lot to do. Laundry, taking out the trash, and lots more. The other days of the week are used up for work, so on Sundays, I always work my butt off. But this Sunday... it feels different. Strange, maybe. On other Sundays, I'd be up already, taking out the trash, or in the kitchen preparing something, or doing laundry, just something. But today, I lie on the bed, gazing into empty space. I don't even make any attempt to get up and draw the curtain closed even though sunlight is already leaping in. I lie like a log of wood, just there, barely breathing, barely alive. And then it comes, sharp and forceful. I jerk, eyes shooting wide in shock. Who the hell knocks on someone's door like that? The knock comes again, sharper, heavier, like the person on the other side is on a mission to split the door apart. "Who?" I ask, getting down from the bed and slipping my feet into the flip-flops beside it. The person doesn't reply. Instead, the knock continues so much that I feel like tearing whoever it is apart. With a grab, I pull the door open and come face to face with them. Two hefty, tall men. My heart thuds hard in my chest as I step back, my skin freezing in fear. Who are they, and to what do I owe this visit? No, hold on, it isn't a visit, because the way they're staring at me, it's like, Hey, let's just kill this bitch and get the fuck out. I didn't steal their kidney. I'm not even a thief, so... My thoughts are interrupted when one of them speaks up. "We are here for our money." Mo... Money? I blink once. Twice. Then gasp in shock. They're wearing the same outfit, and... they come from a loan shark. Diane Hall! What the hell have you gotten yourself into? One of them, the one whose face looks more brutal, gives me a short, wicked smile. "You're not trying to play tricks with us, are you?!" His voice makes my blood run cold and my head spin. It's the kind of voice that could make your heart stop beating, literally. "I... I..." I have no words. I don't even have the money here with me, and the money Conrad paid me days ago, I used it up. Hell, not for myself but for some crappy bills. "No long talks, Diane. You're coming with us." The other finally speaks. His voice isn't soft, but it isn't as harsh as the first man's. I bite my bottom lip hard, shaking my head. I know exactly where they'll take me if I step an inch out of here. It's not somewhere anyone would like to be. It's hell. It's painful. It's scary. I can't, even if I have to stand up against them. So I take a deep breath, then glance up at them. "I know I didn't keep my promise of paying back within one month, but give me a few more days. I'll pay..." "We're tired of always hearing that from you. Always!!" the first guy snaps, his voice sharp, and I flinch, my entire body trembling. "You always have one lie to tell or the other. Today, there are really no excuses." The second clicks his tongue. I can hear my heart pulsing in my chest, my palms turning sweaty. "It's either you pay up..." He stares at me, as if making sure each word he's about to say carves deep into my soul. I gulp, gripping the hem of my nightie so I won't burst out crying. "Or you come with us." The first guy completes with a tilt of his head. Silence. The chilly, tense kind that makes you gulp, shiver and sob at the same time. The time ticks, softly, slowly, as if counting the minutes for us. Then the first guy moves and grabs my wrist, his grip so tight that I fear my bone will crack. "I think we're going with the latter." My eyes brim with tears, but I hold them in, then say the only thing my mind can process at the moment.Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh
Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col
Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr
Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha
Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r
Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
