Conrad's POV

The air is thick with the sweet scent of lavender, blended with the earthy smoke of wine and the freshly baked cake on the table.

The lights in the room shine brightly, not the kind that blinds, but just enough to shine on her face.

I'm seated in the room, a glass of wine tucked in my hand, when she walks in. She holds the hem of her dress tight, like I'd stand up and rip it off her skin.

She isn't smiling, she isn't frowning. Her expression is just too tight, like she has a lot going on in her mind.

I stare at her for a fraction, and she bows her head respectfully.

The black gown she wears fits and highlights her figure so well, and she looks... dazzling, if I'm being honest with myself.

I stand from the couch, dropping the glass with a soft clang.

"Finally decided to come in after staring around like there was something inside here to devour you?" I tilt my head as I ask.

She sighs softly. "I... I just had a lot on my mind."

I nod. "And that a lot suddenly popped up the moment you got here?!"

She shakes her head. "It... it just happened." She replies, and there's something about her reply, like she truly does have a lot on her mind and isn't bluffing. Like something is off that she isn't ready to talk about.

I give a short nod. I'm not going to press her. If she wants to share it with me, she will. I don't want to act like I care "too" much about her when I don't even know if I do, or if I'm just...

"You don't have plans to stand all night, do you?"

Her gaze shoots up to me, shock and surprise colliding.

"Well... I mean, technically, until whenever you want to leave. You're not going to stand till then, are you?" I narrow my gaze at her.

"You haven't offered me any. Can't shove my ass on any sofa without your permission." She replies, more like she's taunting me for not offering her a seat.

Rude? You can say that, but is she right? Kind of, because I didn't offer her any.

"You walked in like there was a ghost here or..."

"Are you offering the seat, or should I guard your house instead?" She cuts me off.

I chuckle, not the mean, bossy chuckle, but the one that screams, okay, I'M SURPRISED. Did she just cut me off? Like, Diane Hall cut me off?

That's interesting. I mean, perfect.

I point to an empty space for her, and she sits down.

"Drinks?" I ask.

"Water." She responds.

"You've got to be kidding me. Water? When you came to see Conrad Beaumont?" I narrow my gaze at her.

"Okay... that's too much talk, you know." She whispers to herself. I'd be lying if I said I didn't hear her. Of course I did, but I pretend not to.

"Just get the drink." She finally says.

I walk to the table where I already have things set. I don't want her to see how much I prepared just for her, because I don't want her to feel special. I just want to treat her to something.

I grab the wine and a glass. Mine is already waiting, so the moment I get back, I pour her some before refilling my almost empty glass.

She takes a sip, just once, then puts the glass down and stares at me.

"Why exactly did you invite me over? Not for a glass of wine, is it?" She asks slowly, brows arched.

Well, even I have no answer to that. I don't know why I invited her. One third of my mind says I just wanted to have a drink with her, another says I wanted to screw her, while the last part is just confused, strangely torn between the other two.

I open my mouth to talk, and for the very first time, Conrad Beaumont is lost for words.

Diane smiles, and without another word, she picks up her glass and gulps down the whole content.

She grabs the bottle of wine, pours, and gulps everything again.

I stare at her, eyes slightly wide.

Another pour, empty. And again. And again.

I drop my glass and rush to her. "Diane, stop." I take the glass from her, but she takes it back almost immediately.

"No... just let me. I just feel like drinking away tonight." She replies.

"And why's that?"

She doesn't reply. Maybe because she has no reason to tell me.

She gulps everything in another shot, then glances up at me.

"You know... I've been thinking.”

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 31

Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 30

Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 29

Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 28

Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 27

Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 26

Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
