The dots quickly connect in my skull as I stare at Conrad, wide-eyed. I think I've figured out how he made them back down. I mean, they literally looked like mean lions ready to destroy, but within a few seconds, everything changed. That nonchalant, mean personality? Crushed! They were completely shaken, looking like kittens beaten by the rain. "You threatened them?" I narrow my gaze at him as I ask. He looks at me, just for a brief moment, then shrugs. "Two options were what I placed before them. They made the decision. No threats here." He responds softly, and I shake my head. I'd be mad to believe he didn't threaten them. Maybe not a threat of having their skulls pulled out or something, but a threat is a threat. "Sir..." "No words, Diane. Come with me." He glares at me. I shake my head, suddenly remembering what I told him over the phone today. "I'll come at my own pace, not now." I object slowly. He turns, tilting his gaze toward me. There's something about his gaze. "You don't wear a nightie to the door, especially not when you have these kinds of people pulling up at your doorstep." He says casually, and I gasp, my entire body turning cold. I quickly lift my hands, shielding myself, and I hear him scof. I press my lips tight. "I'll come, promise. But I've got things to handle first." I rush my words, and before he can say another word, I rush into my room and bang, I slam the door shut, resting my back against it. Oh God. My heart pounds loudly in my chest, and I desperately hope he won't start banging on the door. Not that I think Conrad Beaumont would stoop that low. He always has me confused, wondering what exactly is going on with him. One minute, he's acting nice, like really nice, that you'd think he's the perfect boss one could ever ask for, and the next, you fear he'll crush you with just a stare. The kind that makes you shiver, gulp and avoid his gaze. I quickly leave the door and rush to the window the moment I hear the sound of his car. He's leaving, thank goodness, and that's... disappointing... in a good way, actually. What are you thinking? Disappointed because he left? Oh, come on. After he drives out, I return and collapse onto the bed, ruffling my hair like I've suddenly lost it. How could I forget I was dressed in my nightie? Oh well, I wasn't bothered by Conrad seeing me like that; those two freaks saw too, and maybe that's why they forced me to sit in their middle like I was some hostage or piece of trash. I slam my hands on the bed, hissing angrily at myself. *** I slowly stand from the dressing chair, then stare at my reflection in the mirror. I'm wearing a short black gown that stops right below my knee, with a slit from the left down to my mid-thigh. The gown has silver stones on it and a sharp V-line. It hugs my body so well, like it's tailor-made for me, accentuating all my curves. I have light makeup on, and my hair is neatly packed into a bun. I don't look calm. I look nervous, really nervous, like I've been pushed to the frontline of the world's war and I'll be snapping any moment. I gulp, my heart racing. I can hear it pounding in my ears. Why am I nervous? I have no idea, but I can't control the anxiety. With a sigh, I pick up my phone from the table, shove it inside my purse, then bolt out of the room. I wave down a cab and tell him the address. Of course, Conrad sent me the address of his place a few hours ago, because I had no idea where it was. The drive to his place is quiet, the kind of quiet where everyone is swallowed by their own thoughts. It seems the cab driver has a lot running through his mind too, and so do I. No talks, no chit-chat; he just keeps his gaze on what he's doing, and seriously? I love it. I don't want a random cab man questioning me about stuff I'm not ready to answer. A single beep slams through my phone, and I exhale, pulling the phone out from my purse. Hazel: I'm back. I'm fucking back, Diane, and I'm at the airport. Can't wait to see you. After reading the message, I shut my eyes for a brief moment, then open them. This text is supposed to lighten my mood, cheer me up, but it doesn't. Or maybe it does, to an extent. Ask me what I want? To tell the cab driver to turn around and head straight to the airport. But can I do that? Nope. I made a promise, so basically, I'm a debtor, the kind of debtor that screams beautiful chaos, because Diane Hall is going to pay with her body. "We're here." The cab driver's voice jolts me out of my thoughts. I nod, get down from the cab, and pull out some notes from my purse to hand to him. I turn to the building behind me and stare at it for a moment. It's the perfect lonely-boss kind of building. White light tears through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and I grip the hem of my dress, biting my bottom lip hard. And almost immediately, a beep. Freaky Boss: Are you going to stand out there? Or do I come downstairs to get you? My heart pounds. No, it explodes. I lift my gaze from the screen to the building, but I see no one. Just the white, tall building, lights tearing out of every part of it as if they're on display or some kind of shitty competition. He isn't standing there. I can see no one, and somehow it looks as if he can see me from wherever he is. Another beep. Freaky Boss: Don't get worked up over it. I can see you. Bingo! I know he can, but where exactly is he? I want to type back a reply when my phone beeps again. It isn't from my freaky boss, it isn't from Hazel, and it definitely isn't from the unknown sender. My blood freezes as I stare around.Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh
Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col
Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr
Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha
Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r
Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
